Our Mission

The RSL was founded in June 1916, born out of the camaraderie, concern, and mateship shown by the diggers for the welfare of their mates during and after the 1914-1918 World War. This ethos of compassion, service, and loyalty remains the driving force behind the RSL to this day.

Our mission is to:

  • Ensure programs are in place for the well-being, care, compensation, and commemoration of serving and ex-serving Defence Force members and their dependants.
  • Promote Government and community awareness of the need for a secure, stable, and progressive Australia.
  • Provide a friendly and welcoming environment to the broader community.

Through our Sub-Branch network, we offer individuals the opportunity to become part of the local community, ensuring the commemoration and tradition of the RSL name continues.

Boronia RSL Sub Branch

Boronia is a suburb located 30 kilometres east of Melbourne at the base of Mount Dandenong. Originally part of the Shire of Ferntree Gully, the area was primarily made up of market gardens and flower gardens after World War I.

In the 1920s, returned veterans formed a Sub-Branch to support the widows and dependants of those who had died or were wounded during World War I. This group was known as the Ferntree Gully Returned Sailor’s, Soldier’s, and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia (Ferntree Gully R.S.S.A.I.L.A.).

As the population grew, the need for another Sub-Branch arose, leading to the establishment of the Boronia RSL in 1937. The ideals of the Ferntree Gully RSL were carried forward and remain at the heart of our operations today.

Our Values and Operations

Boronia RSL operates without gaming machines, paid staff, or the trappings of a large Sub-Branch. We rely on the dedication of our volunteers to meet our needs, keeping costs low by utilizing members for necessary tasks.

Our income is generated through:

  • Bar takings
  • Functions and events
  • Raffles
  • Hall hire
  • A small percentage of membership subscriptions (with the remainder going to ANZAC HOUSE)

A portion of funds raised through initiatives like the Poppy Appeal and Anzac Appeals is allocated to our welfare account, supporting veterans in need.

Supporting the Veteran Community

Our contributions to the veteran community are rooted in the original ideals of the Sub-Branch. We maintain a volunteer workforce to assist with tasks such as:

  • Mowing lawns
  • Gardening
  • Maintenance jobs
  • Providing companionship through visits

These efforts ensure that the spirit of compassion and service continues to thrive.

Boronia RSL sub branch is a little piece of our community doing big things. Operated by volunteers and no pokies. A country community pub feel right in your suburb. Great pub meals on Thursday and fridays from 630pm very cheap. Bar with members discount opens at 3pm.

Great venue for live music. Ideal set up for entertainment.. Very sociable group. My steak was a winner.

What fantastic people! Brilliant service and great friendly company! Will definitely go back. Cheers

Always welcomed. Friendly atmosphere and great meals,at reasonably price. The bands and Open Mike are my favourite but they have lots more entertainment. Boronia best kept secret. ❤️💙

Playing darts, very cosy place has meals

I came the first time to this place last night Friday night, and the welcome I got was terrible. A lady called Cheryl her attitude towards people needs to be fixed up meaning told of her behaviour . It was disgusting. I wasn’t welcome but I hear in a respectful manner. If she’s like this with people she shouldn’t work in a place. If I come again and her rudeness, I’ll let her know. Otherwise, the band was good I enjoyed it. I came with friends. We actually sat with the band and it was fine. Like to have more respect from that person. I would like to give five stars but at the moment no until there’s improvement. I actually went to get a hot drink but no hot water on tables, or milk , table needs to be organised a bit better for the coffee and tea! I had to ask for hot water over the kitchen window bay and she was very rude to get the water Then I asked for the milk I got that and then I asked her. Should I put the milk on the table and she didn’t sound very nice. Just rude. 🫤

Dawn service great! Lovely venue.

Bands on Friday nights, Cheap schooners. No pokis. Meals are really good value too.

A great place to meet friends and indeed non members and have a quiet drink

First time l'd been back there in years all volunteer staff were very friendly and welcoming and Kelly was so very friendly and especially when I said I was down from the country in Alexandra Victoria for the weekend and very nice and look forward to going back there in 2024 and l also bought tickets in the raffle and was the first ticket called out and won meat tray and great bands and music thankyou so much for the fantastic Friday night with kind regards Chrissy

Nice relaxing place, bar service was great,

Fantastic little venue with my favourite band in the east called Eat My Shorts. The most attentive and caring friendly staff at Boronia RSL. A gorgeous stage with beautiful lights and a decent sized dance floor! 💃 💃 🕺 💃 💃 🕺

Boronia RSL Sub Branch will always have a special place in my heart. My Great Uncle Raymond is listed on the Honour Board having served in WW1, and being a founding member of the former Ferntree Gully RSL Branch.

Great old Fashion rsl no pokeys Great Volunteer staff

Great band, good food and atmosphere.

Wasn't to bad food is ok small place.

band was good, meals could be a bit better

Great to see Modo playing the showcase slot before today's open mic session. I always find the food confusing, though - there's always a board featuring the day's specials, but food never seems to be on in the afternoon.

Fantastic local atmosphere. Parma is a great feed for $22 and washing it down with $6 schooners was very very nice. Kids had a great time, music was very easy listening. Amazing to be there for an ode due to arriving before 6pm as well. Do not, I repeat do not forget your local RSL when thinking about where to go for dinner!

The music was great the food was good

Unfortunately second night post lockdown was a disaster. We left after 1.5 hrs without eating. I felt sorry for the kitchen staff who had to cope with poor communication and management

Great mob of people

Brought back memories

Great food and live music.. highly recommend.

Amazing

Meals really large servings

A very friendly and clean environment with excellent service.

Cold beer and relaxing atmosphere

Nice venue, outdoor area, stage, cold beer.

Great place for meal and music

Open mic is always a great day thanks wazza

Good food and music in a relaxed atmosphere

Dropped by for a 300 gram steak and once again I was flabbergasted at the limited number of patrons. Seriously good steak (tender, melt in your mouth, perfectly cooked) with some chips and salad at an extremely affordable price. The menu though is much more vast than mere steak. The ambience is old school and very traditional including the usual six pm silence. The beer is cold and the company accommodating. My recommendation is that you get yourself down there.

Great service great attendance

It was different to what I'm used to seeing in nz prior to our March all the lights was turn off, under complete silence and darkness the commanding office shouted his orders to march veterans was transport in old army trucks u had up to 30 army serviceman about the same in navy and airforce marching down the street with all the civilians behind, good turnout maybe the kids singing the national anthems could've practice more after all it is the national anthems they singing, overall I liked being their c u next year✌

Well done for the dawn service as usual.

Friendly service. Meals were good

Small and personal venue with live music some nights plus other activities such as darts. Licensed and supports our service personal.

Boronia's best kept secret - great food at a good price

The meals are fantastic value. They would be double and triple the price elsewhere for the quality, and a great variety too.

Great food great band and great company

Fantastic !! Lovely friendly people

Best steak deal in Melbourne. Very affordable meals and drinks

Live music and meals every Friday evening (except public holidays). Great food, friendly staff. Enjoy..

Best RSL i've being involved in, renovations are fantastic and the meals from the chef amazing.

Nice quiet bar. Good people.
