Fantastic unpretentious pub. Food was great, calamari and cob loaf starters then the house speciality Beef Brisket absolutely perfect just fell apart with smokey bbq sauce. Will definitely go back again.

Don't know what's happened at this place it use to be great. Tonight my boy and I was served the worst dinner and to go with it a smart arse bloke saying I might need to find a new pub to go with my boy when I raised it up with him. Truly a disappointment this place

A bit on the pricier side, but they do a good feed and have friendly staff behind the bar.

Service is very slow. It took over 40 minutes for the starters to be served (calamari and fried chicken dumplings). The mains took another 30 minutes. We ordered 2 steaks medium with sauce on the side. They put the sauce on one of the steaks and mine was burned which came out tougher to cut than well done. We explained that ordering sauce on the side prevents the chips from getting soggy and staff said they'll bring out fresh ones. They never did. It took a long time for them to change the burnt steak. I had to say that if they weren't cooking it yet, we'll just end our meal and pay for what we consumed. Then they checked how much longer it will take. When they finally served my order, they got it wrong! This was so disappointing. We will not be returning.

Hard to find a classic pub anymore. This was just the place I was looking for, and had a great atmosphere. And the perfect beer on tap.

Great local pub. Sensational service, always have the footy on the TV and decent meals. Updated - 2024 - we went back after living away for 5 years and they were awesome - we returned with our 2yrold and they were so accommodating - really really enjoyed it and had a great time.

Great old style pub with great food and excellent staff. Hasn't changed much since I was last there 25 years ago, so the original feel is strong. If, like me, you enjoy that and a lack of gambling facilities, this is a gem.

Great night tonight, the food is good, the beer is very good but the service from Eliza is excellent. The difference between good places and great places is the staff and Eliza is one of the best.

We have just had the most disappointing experience for my birthday,7 adults and 3 children every meal was over cooked, 4 steaks,grilled chicken well done to burnt, entrees over cooked, children's meals chips over cooked, not happy,spent over $550

We had a Sunday roast here which was to die for. Authentic home cooked Yorkshire pudding and I didn’t even use my knife for the pork, it fell apart. Crackling and all the veggies were cooked to perfection. It tasted like a lovely home cooked meal. The atmosphere and staff were great. Very friendly and personable, eager to assist. Will definitely make this a regular!

Had a fantastic date night with my partner at the Railway Hotel South Melbourne, Richard and his staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, the meal was also amazing! will definitely be back.

Best pub food ever had

The railway hotel should be lauded as one of the great pubs of Melbourne. A real pub...no pokies. A front bar that that should have an historical overlay...so full of character...occasionally appearing on ads when a real Australian pub is needed. Sitting in the front bar...I feel like I am living Australia...maybe from a yesteryear....people from all walks of like shooting the breeze...talking about the world , politics or the footy. Kids in with the family enjoying a half parma...can you get any more Australian. Great pub need fresh crisp beers, reasonable prices and a great Parma. Not sure the size of the chicken my parma came from...but filled half a plate....and not a parma out of a bag into the fryer.. .there parma's are fantastic .big, juicy ...with a special crumb...ample chips ..a salad on the side. .enough. .enough to make you think you are being healthy. Dining room out the back...to the side and a beer garden and seating out the front. In the words of Molly Meldrum...before he lost it a bit ...Do yourself a favour" ...get to the railway."

Came here with a couple friends for dinner, absolutely loved the atmosphere with the fireplace. Alex behind the bar was lovely and made sure I was taken care of.

Had a booking of approx 20 people for my mums 70th. Everything was made easy. Staff were so friendly, patient and hospitable. Apologies for all the mess and especially the noise! Thanks for having us Railway Hotel, was a fantastic time!

We love the food at this pub! The service is always terrific too...my only feedback is that the dining room can get REALLY noisy, especially when there is a big table insitu.

Cool Trendy vintage looking old skool Pub… everything you’d expect plus a beer garden. Seats out front too… even gt a pool table and a couple of pinnies. One to be precise and one table Top pac man. Kids loved it. I loved it. Great food. Guy behind the bar running the show is a delight… friendly and courteous even if my rug rats pushed the boundaries at times

Great spot for dinner. Nice weekly specials and a delicious steak and Guinness pie. Happy we made reservations since the place filled up quickly. This place was recommended by our hosts in town and we're happy we tried it!

Hi, this is the scotch fillet loving Uber driver in metro Melbourne. I like to treat myself to a pub meal at least once a fortnight. Of course I have to have the scotch fillet 😃. So one day I told one of my customers about this and behold… He recommended the Railway Hotel in South Melbourne, saying that the steaks there are terrific! So I had to try it 🫠. I did, I dropped in about a month ago and Yes! My steak was terrific! One of the best in Melbourne… that night. So before I review I go back a second time to make sure that the quality of the steak is maintained. Tonight I was dissatisfied ☹️ the great service is the same, the steak I was served was not the same. It was prepared well to my liking but it tasted a little off. You know, when you go to cook a steak, you take a sniff at it and… well you think that it will taste alright after its cooked. So you cook it but it tastes exactly the same way it smelled before you tossed on the BBQ. That’s how this steak tasted, and not even the sauce saved it! My last visit to the this pub I’m afraid. I shall spen my $60 in another pub down the road next time I am in the area. 👋

Food has gone from very well prepared and tasty to mediocre , bland and especially the grilled fish was so tough it was not possible to cut it with a knife There must be a new chef.
