ABOUT ISLINGTON
“If you’re after elegance - it’s the Islington in South Hobart.”
– Gourmet Traveller
Nestled in the heart of South Hobart, the Islington Hotel offers a serene escape just far enough from the city’s bustle to feel secluded, yet close enough to remain connected. With sweeping views of Mount Wellington, this boutique hotel provides an intimate retreat surrounded by panoramic beauty.
Every corner of the Islington whispers luxury. With just 11 uniquely designed rooms, each one pays homage to the past, present, and future stories of Islington, creating a rich sensory journey for every guest. Outside, the gardens transform with the seasons, offering a vibrant canvas of blooming flowers and sun-drenched terraces. In cooler months, the warmth of a crackling fire invites relaxation.
Inside, the Library, Games Room, Conservatory, and Morning Rooms provide peaceful spaces to unwind or connect with fellow travelers. The Islington Kitchen is where Tasmania’s flavors come alive. Each day begins with freshly baked bread, and the Head Chef crafts seasonal menus using locally, ethically, and sustainably sourced ingredients. Dining here is not just a meal—it’s an art.
HISTORY, ART + CULTURE
The story of Islington begins in 1847, during a time when Hobart was still evolving. Built in the refined Regency style, Islington was one of the first grand homes in what was once known as “Holebrook Place,” now Davey Street. By 1899, it had earned its current name, becoming a symbol of elegance and sophistication in Hobart’s dress circle.
Step inside, and history envelops you. The walls of this boutique Tasmanian hotel are adorned with a curated collection of art and artifacts gathered over three decades of global travel. Each room reveals a treasure trove of ancient and contemporary works, creating a private “Tasmanian art museum” for guests to explore. This eclectic collection weaves together Islington’s heritage with the original owners’ deep roots in Tasmania, offering a living gallery that blends the grandeur of the past with the luxuries of the present.

Beautiful place. Nice stuff breakfast incredible.
We loved our stay at Islington Hotel! We felt we were well taken care of. The location was great! Sad we had to leave
Incredible stay! The architecture, food and setting are all first class but what separates the Islington is their attention to detail and personalisation of their service. Huge thanks to all the staff for making our stay so memorable, we look forward to returning! 🤗
Amazing place, beautiful building, rooms and gardens. The staff are exceptional, nothing was a bother. I don't have enough words to describe the food we had Christmas lunch there, mmm. Little snacks and turn down service was delightful. Highly recommended, adults only.
We had a lovely stay at the Islington in 2019 and decided to rebook for our wedding night which was cancelled due to covid for which we gave 6 months notice of the cancellation. The hotel declined to refund but offered a credit. 2 kids later (during which we were unable to book due to the young age of our children) we were excited to head back but they declined to accept our credit voucher as it was just 2 weeks outside of the expiry time. I am shocked at this inflexibility given we had previously enjoyed such warm hospitality there.

Beautiful. Stunning. Wellington Suite.
Used the Discover Australia company based in W.A. I have been before independently but decided to let someone drive. The trip included airfares and transfers to and from hotels and airports. Just had to sit back and be driven everywhere. My friend and are in our 80’s and managed most of the walking. On one excursion we were only. 5 senior people and the tour guide adapted the walking area to our ability. We had a different driver/ tour guide on each trip and at the most 15 people - not always the same people.
We absolutely loved our time at the Islington! The architecture is stunning, the grounds are well kept with the multiple gardens blooming, and our garden suite was spacious and perfect for relaxing. The bed was comfortable, the heated bathroom floors were welcomed, and the shower and amenities were great. We also enjoyed the many treats (chocolates, tea) that were in our room as well as the cookie jars in the kitchen area! ||The stars of Islington are the staff - Jacob was so helpful as was the general manager, Marc. They were professional, friendly and welcoming. Also, the chef...he is a culinary genius and we loved all of his creations from the breads, sweet treats, and the delectably fresh, local breakfast dishes. We're still talking about his sweet corn cakes with salmon and poached eggs...||We highly recommend staying at the Islington when in Hobart and we look forward to returning to this beautiful island and lovely hotel.
Wellington Suite |We travel to Hobart once a year and have stayed in most of the luxury hotels over period of 20years or more.|We have stayed at the Islington previously, though some time ago, and enjoyed it very much.|First, the good things: Very comfortable beds and beautiful gardens.|Unfortunately, the above did not outweigh the negatives. |Although the manager Marc, whom we saw once and one other staff member (of the four staff we encountered) were friendly and approachable, the other two staff members were indifferent and unwelcoming. |After a three nights stay, we were still waiting for the requested conditioner. |For some reason the bathroom floor was not heated as expected.|The afternoon offering of squashed cake and flowers under cling wrap was less than appealing.|Guests expected to use their own accounts to login to Netflix Stan etc . Only free to air tv provided.|Neither the phone nor iPad were charged.|There are no staff after a certain hour and as the phone /ipad didn’t work, we would have been hard pressed to contact any.|I had asked for lactose free milk - none provided in the room. |There is no shaving /make-up mirror in the bathroom.|Most concerning was the bathroom safety .Both the toilet and shower doors open into the shower recess /toilet causing a serious safety issue should the door become blocked on the inside.|After a three night stay, we were not farewelled by any staff member, which by this time, was an unsurprising end to a very lacklustre stay.|There are so many other places in Hobart where fine Tasmanian hospitality is provided.
We'd been wanting to stay at the Islington Hotel for many years having lived nearby for some time. For the price, I was expecting a more luxe experience - even though the room was freshly furnished, some of the fittings were looking tired in the Garden suite. The heavy curtain which is needed to block light for sleeping was tattered and was very difficult to use - and in fact did not close off the entire space (I was pleased to hear it will be replaced shortly, but that didn't help us). There were minimal supplies in the room - no coffee options in room, no mini bar (even though the booking said there was a free mini bar), no moisturiser or bath salts etc - things which we have come to expect from a room in this price bracket. Whilst the bed was comfy, it was very squishy on the left side to get in/out and around and there was a constant fan noise from the ensuite which annoyingly couldn't be turned off and a large gap under the door where light, food smells and a breeze made entry. The breakfast was decent, but our requested late checkout was ruined by the gardener's enthusiastic activities only a few feet away from the room, so we had to abort the idea! I'm glad we got the chance to stay, but happy not to return.
Couldn't have been happier with the service, rooms etc. Beautiful gardens and exceptional staff. Will definitely stay there again.
In Hobart for work/leisure trip & decided to stay in the beautiful Islington Hotel in South Hobart. Marc and his team provide excellent personalised service. Chef cooks amazing breakfasts & our Coal River Chocolate box was amazing 😍
Their presentation, facilities and attention ro detail were excellent!
Excellent weekend stay with fantastic room, personal service, cosy facilities and great quiet neighbourhood. Staff went out of their way to make us feel at home. Only having 11 rooms was fantastic. It enabled perfect balance of privacy. Definitely recommended.
The architect accomplished something special in itself, and then the owners, management and staff have have absolutely enhanced the shine on this diamond. From the magnificent décor to the luxurious comfort, an artful combination of yesterday and today.|The Islington will always feature in my itinerary.
We only had 2 nights here, but wished it was more. Everything was spot on and above expectations. Everything was just excellent. The food, staff, the grounds, the rooms and amenities, just can't be faulted. Great place to stay, just on the outskirts of Hobart CBD|Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
My recent stay at the Islington was nothing short of perfect. The location, staff, food, ambience, attention to detail & room amenities were all perfect. This is the ideal venue for that little bit of luxury during your stay in Hobart. Yes it is a bit outside of the mail hotel area, but that is one of it's charms.... serenity & THAT view of Mount Wellington from your bedroom window is sublime. I would highly recommend.
Our stay was amazing for our honeymoon. Isacc and the chef looked after us from start to finish. The property is beautiful and the gardens were absolutely stunning. Waking up to the Mountain views is so nice. Highly recommend when visiting Hobart.
We’ve stayed at the Islington a few times now, and love it on each occasion. The gardens are beautiful and the facilities are cozy. The service is particularly great, as it feels like a much more expensive European experience. Mark particularly is lovely. We regularly recommend it to friends as it sums up a trip to Tasi.
The Islington Hotel has been such a pleasant place to stay for our trip to Hobart. It’s a beautiful grounds which makes you feel like you’re out of the city, with a stunning garden with great views of Mount Wellington. We had a garden room and it was stunning waking up to the view of the garden. The hotel its self is very nice, built from Sandstone and immaculately decorated. The room was very spacious. It’s very well located, close to everything, but as I said feeling like you’re not in a main city. Breakfast was delicious and the dining room has glass walls with a great view and a fireplace that is always lit. The staff were amazing and attentive. Marc was always available to our every need. I’d highly recommend it
Such a beautiful hotel and wonderful service. Breakfast was fantastic and the view made me feel so excluded even though we were on the outskirts of town. I can imagine throwing wonderful parties here and just enjoying the gorgeous building and decor. Photos don’t do it justice. The only challenge was the room temperature would not lift past 20degrees - in the middle of winter with giant windows (to a beautiful garden! I was purposefully staying to work remote a few days - which meant spending my days in the room (desk was suitable, hair was comfortable), yet an ice cold room all day and all night was very uncomfortable. Staff were kindly accomodating for last minute meetings before and after check out times, to which I am very grateful. Overall phenomenal hotel, I am certain they will resolve the ice box issue in due time.
What a fabulous experience. Luxury beyond my dreams. Tray of herbal tea and chocolate on bed each night!
This was our first visit to Tasmania and staying at the Islington was a highlight of the trip. The service is outstanding, and the room extremely comfortable and clean. The whole place has a lovely Victorian era charm. You can relax around the grounds and there is plenty of room to sit and relax outside of your room. Breakfast everyday is a must as the food was amazing. They’re also currently updating the furniture and decor which will just make it even better. We loved our stay, thanks!
Everything was excellent, including the view, room design, and friendly staff. However, on the day I stayed, the room was really dusty. And in the morning, I had breakfast. The waiter was unkind to us, scolded us, and it was clear from his facial expressions that he still needed more training. I did not pay for this.
For the money I was expecting way more. Sugar jar had plastic in it. Curtains had holes and so did the walls. Not to mention green scum on the shower walls. Also the sun belting through a window that if u close the curtain will block the TV from view. Coffee was warm just and not good. Bit of a disappointment really.
My wife and I stayed at the Islington for our 15th wedding anniversary. Whilst our impressions of our stay may be inflated by being our first trip away sans children in 12.5 years, we are confident that anyone would agree with our experience. To say that it was a magical experience would be like saying Nicholas Cage’s performance in “The Rock” was only okay. This place blew our minds (and souls). Set in the foothills of Mt Wellington, our Garden Room was tranquil and peaceful. Whilst disappointed our room didn’t provide a view of Cradle Mountain (it is after all, about 300km away and in a different direction), the crisp and clear blue skies gave us an immaculate view of Mt Wellington. The mountain called us, and on our first day we ventured up. Having 3 needy children at home, we chose the more cost effective option of getting an Uber up the mountain with the intention of a romantic walk down… which we did, resulting in very sore shin muscles and a cranky wife, when we struggled to get a ride back. Fortunately, our room provided an extremely comfortable bed to rest upon, and a large soaking tub to immerse in. The weather outside was as cold as a mother-in-law’s kiss, so the warmth of the fire was that much more inviting. Location is a little out of town, which suited us perfectly. Morning brekky was elite. Coffees on call- first class. I felt like I should have been wearing a monocle whilst staying there. I’m sure if you scroll though, you’ll find a negative review, but don’t believe that guy- he is an obnoxious swine with unrealistic expectations. Well done to Marc and team.
📝 Spent 2 lovely nights at this hotel on the outskirts of Hobart. Highly recommended! 🛏️ We had a splendid room that was very big and comfortable. The bathroom was also huge and had a nice, warm floor. Each day we found in the room complimentary sweets, while each night a tea set was put on our bed so we could prepare a relaxing tea before sleeping. Outside there were also a couple of chairs to enjoy the hotel's pretty garden. 📍 The hotel was built in and around a beautiful historic villa. Everything is super elegant and gives a nice feeling. Loved also the breakfast area with the big glass windows that let lots of light in. In terms of location, you probably need a car to get there since it's further away from the center. They have private parking but even outside of the property you could simply park on the side of the street. 🍴 Breakfast was very good: a few things like muffins and pastries were available as buffet, otherwise we could each order a hot or cold dish from a little menu we had at the table, which would be freshly prepared.
My partner and I had the most amazing stay at the The Islington Hotel! The hotel itself had a stunning aesthetic, with a French provincial style throughout. It’s also a short walk to the CBD, with direct access to bustling suburbs like Sandy Bay and Battery Point. The hotel restaurant was also noteworthy, with delicious food served up every day. The staff were all so attentive and accommodating, and this really elevated our stay. A big thank you to the hotel manager Mark, who made us feel at home upon arrival. James and I will definitely be coming back :)
Divine.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Islington Hotel is an absolute gem! The moment you step foot onto the grounds, you're greeted by breathtakingly beautiful buildings that exude charm and elegance. The furnishings are impeccable, blending luxury with a cozy, inviting atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. However, what truly sets this place apart is its top-notch service. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure every guest's needs are not just met, but exceeded. Their attention to detail and genuine warmth create an unparalleled experience. Islington Hotel is a true haven where beauty meets exceptional service—a five-star retreat worth every accolade.
If you want exceptional, this is where you need to stay. Everything from arrival to the room , gardens views of Mt Wellington, and the food is just wonderful . Not just a stay but an experience. I would definitely recommend the Islington as a must do in Hobart.
Absolutely amazing experience - highly recommend for romantic getaways. The staff were without fault; from the introductions and service to the personalised touches, they were so accommodating, thoughtful and very friendly. The views are beautiful: mountain scale backgrounds and a beautiful well maintained garden that drew you in. Stunningly decorated with beautiful interior and exterior, and the romantic historic edge to staying in a heritage house with modern touches, it did not disappoint. Private sitting areas with active fireplaces, books, chess, eclectic artworks and little hideaways. The food was wonderful (lovely menu) with a welcoming and friendly chef, help-yourself cookies, scones, fruit, meringues and personalised teas. It was a wonderful time - will definitely be returning!
The Islington was recommended to us by friends and it certainly lived up to its reputation. A truly wonderful, first class experience, with professional, friendly staff and a spectacular location. Our suite was spacious and luxurious, with every convenience catered for. The little personal touches, like the evening bedtime tea and treats, were very appreciated. We particularly enjoyed the meld of old colonial past with the post modern newer build and decor. The dining too was exceptional, both of us enjoyed a 3 course birthday dinner to celebrate and the breakfast both mornings. All was beautifully presented and equally as delicious, with thoughtful vegan options also available for hubby. Only small issue was no lactose free milk 2 mornings in a row, so no coffee for me - as a dietary requirement for many, this should definitely be a staple on offer. Otherwise absolutely wonderful in every way.
Wonderful Service. Exquisite grounds. Well appointed room. Stayed in the garden suite, would definitely recommend. Had a very relaxing little getaway. Views of the mountain are exquisite. Hot breakfast included. Would absolutely stay here again
My husband and I held our small 28 person wedding here in January. We booked the whole hotel exclusively so majority of our guests could stay the whole weekend. We were all blown away by the exceptional service we received, not only on our wedding day, but for the whole weekend. The level of service here is so hard to find. Everyone was constantly greeted by name by the very friendly staff and asked if they wanted barista-made coffee or refreshments. They had a turndown service including sleepy tea, daily treats and an all day pastry table. The whole hotel was beautiful and very clean/maintained. Everyone commented on how comfy the beds were! Marc (the manager) is extremely professional and hardworking. He helped us organise our wedding from interstate with multiple video calls and emails. Nothing was ever too much trouble and he always put our mind at ease. He ensured our wedding day ran smoothly, even with last minute changes and wet weather. We also had multiple video calls with the head chef Tony who was very accomodating with the menu and any dietary requirements. The food was fantastic and there was plenty of it! We couldn’t recommend the Islington hotel enough if you want an intimate wedding where everyone feels special!
Beautiful property with amazingly furnished rooms, architecture and landscape. We originally booked to have dinner there but couldn’t make it as our flight arrived a few hours late. We emailed the hotel and they’re nice enough to prepare us a cheese platter in our rooms. Breakfast was magnificent, so is the space we dined in. Can’t recommend Islington Hotel enough for your future stay at Hobart!
This is the only place we book when coming to Hobart. It's just outside the hustle of the city centre, but walkable to everything we like to see and do.
What a step-back in time, for all the right reasons. The staff, service and facilities are impeccable, but it’s the actual hotel itself that is the real star, boasting four fireplaces and comfy lounges - it’s just lovely. Thanks to Jacob for the late night chats and chess when I couldn’t sleep.
Words cannot express how incredible this property is. Beautiful! Amazing! Wonderful! Looked after like family from the moment I walked through the door. I didn’t want to go home!! I will be back! This is the best!! Do it you won’t regret it
Such a special place, we wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else in Hobart. From the moment we arrived, the service provided by Gabriela and Claire was outstanding and the hotel rooms and gardens are magnificent. The dinner was delicious and as good as any fine dining experience we’ve had and the breakfast every morning was just as good. The chefs were really friendly and the whole experience is extremely personable and peaceful. The Islington hotel is the perfect place for any couple looking to relax and enjoy the finer things in life. Cannot recommended highly enough!
Absolutely spectacular, exceeded all expectations. A very personal touch to the service and as professional as it gets. The room, the spaces and atmosphere was top notch.
Everything about this place is fabulous! From the welcome you receive upon arrival, to the rooms, to the 3 course + desert dinner, to breakfast and the unlimited barrister made coffees to your room. We will definitely return!
Incredible. So unique. Quaint, boutique hotel. Would not want to be staying anywhere else. Absolutely coming here again. rooms were so comfortable and cosy. So many semi private living spaces around the house. The garden was so much fun. Picked many berries and stone fruit to eat in our room
Amazing! Rooms and cute and spacious (for a hotel), gorgeous garden’s, lovely continental breakfast, 24 hour tea and barrister coffee available, customer service = outstanding. I highly recommend paying a little bit more to stay at the Islington in Hobart
One word... AMAZING. The whole visit from check in to check out was fantastic. The staff were incredible and went above and beyond to make us feel AT HOME. This is a perfect couples hideaway. The grounds were just wonderful and a great place to just sit and relax the food is excellent what ever your choices. This place WILL be on our must return to list. And thanks to the staff for taking such good care of my wife before I arrived ..
Wonderful hotel and the staff are amazing. We had a lovely meal and breakfast. First class hotel
A special place, a beautiful estate and amazing staff. It’s hard for the business during these crazy times but I encourage everyone to support this space. Had my proposal here and they just completely pampered us. The best experience and forever memorable to us. The layout, art and breakfast was to the detail. What more could we ask for.
I dealt with Claire and Gabriela several times while making a large group booking for July 2021. They were both always so friendly, professional and helpful. We were a group of 22 coming down from Melbourne for 3 nights and had booked out the entire hotel as well as organised dinner for the Friday night in the hotel, and in the last few days unfortunately we were all unable to go due to Covid-19 lockdowns. We had paid a substantial amount deposit (50% of the entire booking). The hotel came back to us and initially offered half of the 50% deposit as a refund and the other half as credit, which I thought was very generous as they only had to give us a credit. A week later, they actually offered the entire amount we paid back which I was so pleasantly surprised at. The hotel lost their entire booking for the weekend we were supposed to be there, yet still offered us all money back. That is impeccable service. I cant speak highly enough of the staff, management and Hotel, and would recommend it to anyone. We cant wait to get down to Hobart to stay there.
Second time staying here. It is awesome.
Absolutely amazing! The building is beautiful, the service is incredible, the food is delicious. Highly recommend.
Best Place in Hobart
Stunning property. Restaurant and service was very good.
Started here with my wife for my birthday and had a wonderful stay. From the moment we entered the premises and greeted by the general manager we just had the best time. The wonderful older part of the hotel dates from 1847 and is filled with fascinating items collected by the owners. The newer sections of the hotel provided great accommodation and our room had a be great view of My Wellington. Staff were fantastic including the chef who came and talked to us about the meals on offer.
Stunning environment, fantastic food and service.
My husband and I recently had the privilege of getting married here. It was by far the most wonderful experiences of my life! All the staff throughout the organisation stage to the service on the night, were fantastic. The chef cook the most divine food, it had so much love and passion poured into every dish. They did the most incredible job catering for our vegan guests, and even got in our favourite red wine. The venue is just spectacular, they have the most exquisite artworks and each room is uniquely designed. I look forward to returning for our anniversarys to come. Thank you so much to the entire team at the Islington, you made our marriage the most memorable evening.
Expert service from Claire who to our every need. Great job.
Wow! This place is stunning. Hands down the best hotel I've ever stayed in.
It was amazing ....the staff were great....relaxed...breakfast was great...greg the chef he's food was out of this world...my taste buds didnt want to stop eating....wow...when i come back to Hobart im booking again there.
Fantastic hidden gem. Private garden was beautiful. Service discrete. Ventilation could be improved as our room was over the kitchen. Whole room smells like breakfast.
Excellent and gorgeous hotel, awesome food and great hospitality. What else do you need?
Really special place homely friendly and unique loved the service nice humble and relaxing.
We just had 4 nights at The Islington and we can’t fault it. From the welcoming, friendly staff to the beautifully appointed room with everything we needed, not to mention the food! A la carte breakfast, all day snacks and the chef’s dinner (extra) were all amazing. We will definitely return if we come back to Hobart.
Very nice
Absolutely wonderful! Speechless, all the great reviews were true! We will be back .
Beautiful room, staff and breakfast. Lovely touches- dream tea and a treat delivered to the room at night time, coffee, tea, juices and pastries throughout the stay, heated bathroom floors in our room, very friendly and helpful staff, great breakfast, stunning sitting rooms with fireplaces. Can’t wait to return.
Great stay. Lovely people.
I only wish I had known how amazing this hotel was before booking, I would of based my holiday around this beautiful haven. The food and accomadation was exceptional but it was the staff that truly set this hotel apart from any I have stayed at in Tasmania. A huge thank you from both myself and my partner.
Great place to unwind for a week. Staff, accommodation and food were amazing.
Amazing place! Service is outstanding! Really enjoyed my time there! Highly recommend this place!
Had a brilliant time here. Great location and lovely rooms.
Wonderful boutique Hotel wish we would of discovered this place earlier. Fantastic food and friendly chef went above and beyond great service staff were amazing Gaby was lovely, enjoyable experience pleasant surprise will defiantly coming back again .
Attention to detail
Beautiful rooms, delicious food and welcoming staff. We felt right at home and look forward to returning. Highly recommend for a night of luxury.
Great place to stay... they do all the little things right, polite, generous, clean... recommended!
Amazing place. From the moment we stepped in the front door we were greeted by Annette who made us feel like VIPs. The rooms were exceptional, clean and stocked with quality products. Each night of our stay, we were presented with a tray containing their specialy made 'good sleep tea' and chocolates. Thank you to the wonderful staff. Humberto and Rosy
We recently held our wedding at the Islington. The whole process was a dream. Easy to deal with in the lead up, accommodating and helpful. The rooms are wonderful, beds and pillows the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on, and the staff are wonderful.... they helped make our day as special as it could be. The food is also amazing. You won’t find a better place to stay.
Great gardens to explore and relax, fantastic food and rooms
We stayed at the Islington Hotel for 3 nights and it's one of my favorite places that I've ever stayed in. We were in the Regency Room by the kitchen. The room itself was beautiful and spacious -- there was space to sit and enjoy tea, a big comfortable bed, a lovely bathroom with a large soaking tub (Aesop bath products, which I love) The building is beautiful, with lots of lovely sitting rooms -- cozy, with fireplaces, and excellent art. At night, after dinner, we made it a habit to drink some of the wines we had purchased while exploring Tamar Valley and Coal River Valley by one of the fireplaces. Service was personal, and it felt like everyone was making an effort to go above and beyond. The included hot breakfast is a luxury, the pastries and tarts sitting in the kitchen are the perfect snack with tea after a day of exploring, and the turn down service in the evening was really special! I don't know when we'll go to Hobart again, but if anyone visits, we will always recommend Islington.
