About Us | The Mona Vale Hotel
Welcome to The Mona
The Mona, a treasured institution of the Northern Beaches, is excited to announce its grand reopening this October. Under the stewardship of popular local Ben Hanson, the iconic pub, formerly known as The Old Rex Hotel, and more recently The Park House, will unveil a fresh look and renewed spirit while paying heartfelt tribute to its rich heritage.
Since its debut as the Old Rex Hotel in 1925, The Mona has been a cornerstone of Northern Beaches culture, renowned for its live music, great food, and lively atmosphere. Evolving into The Mona in the 1980s, it was later rebranded as The Park House following its acquisition by Arthur Laundy (and the Short Family) in 2014. Now, under Ben Hanson’s ownership, The Mona is set to reconnect with its roots as a quintessential local pub, honouring its legacy while embracing a vibrant future.
A Fresh Experience
The Revamped Courtyard
The revamped Courtyard delivers a vibrant dining experience with its dynamic indoor/outdoor space, perfect for lively get-togethers. Here, the new food menu, developed by Ben Hanson in collaboration with Laundy Hotels’ Group Head Chefs, continues to offer good Aussie hospitality. Enjoy your favourite pub classics, as well as elevated ‘surf and turf’-style mains, salads, share plates, and tacos.
Upgraded Beer Garden and Back Yard
The Beer Garden and Back Yard have both undergone a significant upgrade with new astro turf, shade sails, and the addition of a playground. The sprawling outdoor space now features:
- An airstream with five beer taps
- A deck for live music
- A 4x3 metre large screen TV for watching the best live sports
The new playground features Moduplay custom-made equipment, including a 4-metre slippery dip, 3 sets of swings, and fun climbing structures.
Ben’s Bakery Café
Opening daily at 8am, Ben’s Bakery Café offers a convenient spot for commuters to grab a “B-Line Bite” – a coffee and pastry or croissant for just $10. It’s also a welcoming space for mothers’ groups to enjoy coffee while their kids play in the adjacent playground. From midday, the café pivots into a pizzeria, serving delicious wood-fired pizzas from the Vesuvio pizza oven, including Roman-style pizzas.
A Legacy of Community
The Mona has been a staple of Northern Beaches culture for nearly a century. With its legacy of community spirit and a refreshed look, The Mona is ready to welcome back old friends and new visitors. Experience the perfect blend of tradition and modernity, all within a local pub run by a local favourite.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Friends and I booked a table for dinner. After travelling 40 minutes we were told the venue was at capacity because of a function. At no stage were we contacted by the venue to advise us. Instead, myself and others waiting for our table were left standing outside and then verbally abused by the owner, Ben, for being there. Even after presenting my booking confirmation he slammed the door on us. Beyond disappointing… plenty of other better venues in the area, so not worth it. Also, I politely asked Ben for an email to contact and was scoffed at and told to “figure it out”. I hope this now public review goes some way in addressing this behaviour.
A happy surprise for us including our puppy ! The foods were wonderful and atmosphere was very cozy, natural and beautiful. Most of all, they allowed dogs in/ outside of the place so our kids were very happy to enjoy the great lunch together with our hairy companion. Parking was so easy, utilizing Coles car park, next door. Highly recommend for all dog lovers & families !
Best atmosphere, good service, good prices… Always nice to enjoy..
Love this place, to go with friends or family too. Kids more than welcome and great happy hour 4 to 6 Mon to Friday. The food I’ve tried was also very good
Was a great place to visit from out of town. We came on Aus day I’m pretty sure. Was great venue nice and large staff were helpful and the guy at the cafe was an absolute legend thanks for a good coffee! Had great food and good family time. Although having to get your own food is fair enough being such a large establishment so it makes sense. They also had ponies and stuff come into the courtyard area? Or something I mean if you can eat out there not ideal really as if the animals poop etc smells not the best idea. But nothing to affect us
Good spot for families. Really good renovations and change to family friendly
Dog very friendly!
Don't order the pizza. Very average. Go to pizza hut.
We've only just moved to Bayview, and it's a great place for a great, unpretentious meal with a relaxing atmosphere
Family day after the wedding catch-up.
A busy local pub. Sometimes with live music.
Great spot for casual food and drinks with close proximity to the beaches around.
My fish of the day was overpriced for 2 tiny slivers; my friends steak was well done when wanted medium rare.We sent it back because as,got another one,but took way to long.
Got to the park houthe on a beautiful thummerth day, vibeth were high, thtomach wath empty and ready for a cocktail and parmie. Cocktailth came quick and were thuper tathtey! BUT, the parmie took OVER an hour to come, apparently it was held in “limbo” for an hour before they realithed. The therverth were lovely and apologithed profuthely, however, too little too late.
The breakaways band awesome
Food was awesome taste good music and vibes friendly atmosphere need more space for families outdoors
Pathetic food. Waiter had no manner, I wouldn’t recommend this pub feed to anyone interested
A very pokey bowl We came here to mona pub every week for dinner & drinks after twilight sailing. Not anymore! I ordered the pokey bowl with falafels. The disappointing issue with this meal was the falafels were missing plus there was way too much dressing! The kitchen had just that second closed. The staff didn’t care & refused to ask chef to heat up & serve the missing falafels. Now eating delicious fish tacos at the Mexican restaurant down the road. I guess we will just come here from now on. The food, service & atmosphere here is much better!
Friday night was collectively between the majority of patrons who ordered food after 6pm a real let down. Everyone was aware of the additional 1 hour wait for food but waiting almost two hours for a pizza nuggets and Poke bowl was long stretch. The main issue however was when I asked for an update on food (to decide whether to persist or cancel the order) the pizza was sitting under the warm light on one side of the pass, the nuggets on the other side and the poke bowl in the middle. Note there was always at least 20-30 dishes sitting at the pass … it would appear the buzzer system was not working as you would have to go to the kitchen to enquire and they would kinda jigsaw puzzle the dishes together. Pizza was dry and stale, nuggets dry and hard and poke bowl was soggy … I guess given the time all the dishes sat around. A positive of the unfortunate circumstances we were able to connect and chat with adjacent tables about the food and service issues. Upon leaving we noticed more people complaining and the pass was full of meals sitting there and staff seemed to be making no real effort to communicate with patrons about what I would only assume is a computer system / buzzer stuff up. Usually the staff vibe and outdoor kids area is awesome and will be back but will be careful about how / if we order food there again.
Worst customer experience. No order or process around food ordering. We were told an hour wait for food. 2 hours later nothing then when we talked to staff they said we have no idea and just wait for your food. This is the worst food experience we have ever had. Just pathetic!
Took over 1 and a half hours for our food to arrive. When we asked on an ETA, was told you will get it when it's ready. Atrocious
The food is amazing, one of the best pizzas I had, but the mortadela sandwich was a very pleasant surprise, I wasn't expecting it to be so good.
A group of 8 of us went last Saturday. Arriving at 6.30 we promptly ordered our food. At 8pm only 2 very ordinary meals had arrived. When asked how long it would take for our orders the staff responded, we are not sure We cancelled our orders and left Expensive drinks, expensive food that may not turn up Stick to the RSL if you want pub grub or go to a proper restaurant. These guys have no idea
Last night, Saturday, 9 of us went to the Mona for dinner. It was incredibly loud and crowded. We had to wait over an hour 15 minutes for our meals, and we cancelled a number of our meals because too late! My meal and my partners meal was cold when it finally arrived. Wanted to give the new owner a go but all of us will not be back.
I’m consistently impressed with The Mona every time I go. They are constantly making upgrades that no other hotel on the beaches has or would even think off and with so beauty and attention to detail and it seems with no limits in expense. The ambience, feel of high end relaxation style and service is everywhere. Music is great and is matched appropriately to every section and personality. The menu has something for everyone and is cooked with love and attention. The cocktails are great with a good selection of other beverages. Though my favourite part is their open arms for my dog.
Food was good, but waited 1.5 hours and paid a 15% Sunday surcharge (vs normal 10%).
Just love the place
Such a lively place. Fun for the kids as well.
Gaming attendant yelled at us about malfunctioning machine after we explain what happened about 7 goddamn times. Very unprofessional and could have resolved if the attendant listened to us and if he could understand what we were saying. Saturday 26/10/10 - 8.03pm. Asian fellow mid thirties. Very poor service and did not respect us.
First time we've visited since the latest rebranding and refurb - had an awesome time! The playground was perfect for the kids, it was so good to be able to let them run amok, whilst sitting nearby and keeping an eye on them, yet not have to chase after them constantly haha, something we're not able to do at other local pubs. Great selection of food and drinks, and honestly, probably the best pub steak I've had - cooked how I'd asked for, sauce included, and even the salad and dressing was super nice. We'll definitely be back, and I'd say this is now our #1 choice for a lunch and dinner out with the fam!
New Reno is great, whole setup is a huge improvement
The tables were dirty with dishes, there was NO SERVICE, the bartender got every every single drink order wrong. He got it wrong whilst my husband was directly in front of him on a very busy Saturday night. He spent more time joking with his mates than listening. That's a shame and bad for business. Food was average at best but the food arrived promptly and chips were good.
Desperately need a better system for delivering food! It was cold by the time it got to me and my partner had almost eaten his entire meal….they were wondering around looking for the number. Ridiculous!
Great local pub. The rebranding is even better. Regular bands & live music. Extensive menu & cocktail list. Staff are friendly, helpful & will go out of their way to assist you in any they can. Lana the manager is outstanding with her caring and friendly nature. Highly recommended.
New management. Great new crew.
The Mona Vale Hotel has a cool and stylish space, but the service left a lot to be desired. My friends and I ordered some food, and it took over an hour and a half to arrive. We complained multiple times, and each time, we were told it would be ‘another 10 minutes.’ The staff clearly had no idea when the kitchen would actually have our meals ready. Two of my friends ended up asking for a refund because the wait was just too long. While the food was great, the service and lack of attention was really disappointing.
My partner and I came for lunch, Granted it was busy and we were told there would be a wait for our food. But. We waited over an hour for our chicken burger and nachos, the burger was warmish but the nachos was completely cold and arrived around 10 mins after the burger. I would have said something to the wait staff, but they were totally run off their feet and it was not their fault the food came out so slowly and cold. We have both eaten here many times before and never had an issue, maybe the kitchen needs to be staffed a bit more adequately for a Sunday lunch after re branding and increased interest in trying out the new look.
Not a great venue for the UFC. We were hoping to have a new home for all the big fights, and it’s a shame because they have a decent big screen. But alas a room full of people watched most of the fights with no sound for UFC307 and when the sound WAS turned on it wasn’t loud enough to hear the commentary clearly. And the god-awful timed air fresheners left my partner sneezing for the rest of the day and felt like it was all in our drinks, in our eyes, totally overpowering. Please get them turned down/off I beg you. Unfortunately, this will not be our new Sunday haunt.
Spent a few hours at The Mona. (Mona Vale pub). Fantastic service. The food was absolutely amazing. I had the Oven Baked Salmon and husband had the Mediterranean Salad with chicken. Amazing. Shits all over the Wharf bar food and prices weren’t bad. Family friendly but also plenty of spaces if you don’t have kids so there’s something for everyone. And there’s a massive screen for the sports fan.
Slow service, and not particularly friendly. Food is nice and reasonably priced. Playground is good.
Had a great meal - first time at MVPH. Was busy but Marlo looked after us very well .
Waited an hour and no meals appeared 4 seperate staff offered 4 different excuses. It was a busy night. All it required was an acknowledgement of error in the first instance and an immediate refund. Neither occurred promptly. The manager Oly struggled from a customer service perspective.
Seperate the food orders from the bar! It’s stupidly slow to get a beer outside.
Great little place for pub dinner.
The new area for kids is fantastic.
Food was fine. There was problem with the menu tonight and a woman came in to feed her little boy, and I guess she was out of luck. The worker laughed about the lady to her colleague. It was horrible. Ignored her, walked away and left her holding her baby so upset. Have some decency for your customers. I’d go elsewhere.
We had a wonderful time! Really impressive interiors, friendly staff and delicious food. Dad said it was the best parmi he has ever had! High praise indeed. My tacos were fantastic too. The trivia is awesome with a great host in Seb also. We can't wait to go back!
Friendly service and good atmosphere.
Terrible experience here, be better off going to the Newport or mona social. One of the worst places to drink on northern beaches. Bartender was extremely rude
Ok value, comfortable atmosphere. Average steak, good wings, tacos
The restaurant has an excellent menu Chose the Mediterranean Salad as a main and it was not only a large serving but also probably the best I have ever had; Service was quick and efficient supported by young and energetic staff; Lots of radiant heaters installed so was nice and warm on a cold evening Plenty of parking nearby with disabled access
Yum food, great service, surprised at low reviews, Local
5 TV's and can't change to sport channel.
A really lovely family friendly venue. Good food, great vibes.
Great management
Great atmosphere and they have done a nice job doing up the inside. Kids are happy there’s a games room. Dog is happy is he’s with us and not at home! Awesome place
just too expensive 2 schooners of beer on a sunday 23 dollars ....too much that's dearer than a alacarte restaurant
Food poisoning for 4 of the 8 members of the group
Nice atmosphere and great food.
Sorry, wanted to enjoy this; but possibly the worse steak I’ve ever eaten. Cooked in the same pan as the fish before and tasted Awful! Terrible service, not a single waiter came to check all ok, despite the restaurant being half empty?? Had to clear own plates from the table after we finished, not a single waiter around. We won’t be back i
Not what it used to be unfortunately. Undercooked burgers and service without the smile. Try to avoid the public holidays as that $15 bottle of prosecco from BWS is over $70 here!
