I visited Dick’s Hotel in Balmain the other weekend with some friends, and unfortunately, four of us ended up with food poisoning. We ordered a mix of meals, including chicken parmigiana, steak, and tacos. The steak arrived surprisingly fast—within about five minutes—which seemed a little off, but we didn’t think much of it at the time. Some of my friends who also had a parmigiana didn’t get sick, so it’s unclear whether the issue was food that had been left out too long or possible cross-contamination in the kitchen. The next day, I called the hotel to report what happened and requested a refund. I was told the manager would call me back the following day, but after waiting two days without a response, I followed up again. When I finally spoke to the manager, she was apologetic and mentioned she had spoken with the owners. However, rather than a refund, they offered a bottle of wine as a goodwill gesture. While I appreciate the offer, it didn’t feel like an appropriate resolution given that four of us became ill after dining there. When I politely declined and reiterated my request for a refund, I was told they don’t issue refunds due to concerns that some people try to take advantage of the policy. While I understand their position, it was disappointing to feel like our experience wasn’t fully acknowledged. The manager assured me they checked that everything in the fridge was in date, but food safety goes beyond expiry dates—it includes storage, handling, and kitchen hygiene. If you’re planning to eat here, I’d recommend being mindful of their food safety practices. While the staff were apologetic, the overall handling of the situation could have been much better.

Fantastic Venue with great food, drinks and service. We had lots of fun catching up with old friends.

Great pub this one. It has a limited selection of beers if you are after a full bar of boutique beers. It has your standard selection with friendly bar staff, which is good for me. The beer garden is relaxed, the service fast and the food is fresh, quality pub fare. I dont get to Dick's Hotel often, but I always enjoy it when I do, and whenever I'm in Balmain I will find an excuse to have a quiet ale or 2 at Dick's

Too authentic

We held a function in the upstairs rooms for 55 people and had an absolutely wonderful time! We served finger food, had an open bar and set up a dance floor. All the staff were wonderful- the food was delicious and we spent far less than we had budgeted. Highly recommended and we can’t wait to hold our next function at Dicks Hotel!

We held my daughter’s 21st in the upstairs space at DiCKS last night and the guests raved about the venue, the service and the food. The pre-party organising was so easy and the team at Dicks were flexible and accommodated everything we wanted. We had around 80 guests and there was plenty of great food at very reasonable prices. Every staff member I interacted with were exceptional, particularly Joe and the bar staff last night who were incredible. Will definitely use the venue again and would highly recommend.

Good food, great beers, very nice beer garden and friendly staff. Sports inside. What more do you want !!!

Good traditional pub in the heart of Balmain.. take a seat in the front bar and watch the clueless Balmain driving public fail to navigate the roundabout....

An old regular (me) returning after about 20 years. Wonderful to come across a pub that hasn't been tarted up. Still feels like a pub.

Never had an issue with food or drinks great place to hang Staff friendly and steaks are just soooo 😋 yummy

Great little spot tucked away in Balmain. Really warm atmosphere and friendly staff. The food was delicious and the beers are cold 😀. Will be back to try something else on the menu.

Went for lunch with my wife and two young children. As we left pushing our pram out the front door the bar staff gathered and yelled goodbye to the worst customers ever ". Absolutely disgusting venue!"

If you're under 35, the trivia is not for you. Food is expensive but good drink range.

The food was great and the servings were generous too. The service was good as they even treated us to courtesy chips as they believed the broccolini serving was small. It was rather quiet for a friday footy night.

I organised a 30th birthday function for my partner in the beautiful function room upstairs, and it was absolutely perfect. Paul and his team were great to deal with, making the whole process leading up to the day, as well as on the night, as seamless and enjoyable as possible. I would definitely recommend this venue to anyone looking to host their next function!! Thanks again Paul, Amelia and team.

My friends sent me in on Australia Day to buy a bottle of rosé for a pool party, but I was so taken with the decor, the atmosphere & the friendly staff that I convinced them to come back with me later. I’m an omnivore who can drink & eat anything at all, but my friends are vegetarian & have several other dietary issues, so we shared some vego pizza & vego nachos, which were very tasty and filling, and ordered a carafe of watermelon sangria, which was the perfect drink for a hot day. I loved how friendly and attentive the staff were, and the set of house rules chalked on a wall. One of them was “No customer wifi, don’t even ask. Talk to each other instead.”, which is exactly what people should be doing rather than ignoring each other & interacting with their phones. There’s plenty of time for that on the bus ride home. Top place to dine or drink or both. We will definitely return.

Great place to grab a few beers and get a decent menu for food.

Mum & I came here for lunch to celebrate her bday, the servings were generous and the meals were so tasty. We loved the outdoor beer garden which had a nice breeze and good sized smokers area. Special thanks to Andy for making mums bday extra special ❤️ we will definitely be back for Sunday roast.

Very serviceable for an afl grand final venue. Plenty of space. Probably not enough tv’s for a true sports pub, as advertised. Food and drink great.

Nice staff, but definitely not worth having lunch/dinner. It doesn’t look fresh and for “salad” they just put cos lettuce with Parmesan cheese on top 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Excellent pub, amazing name and the most wonderful staff. The squid was mind blowing and the steak was cooked to absolute medium rare perfection.

Not a local but have to say we were treated like one. What a great vibe from an early start we left to attend an event and csme back for a meal. Them pizzas be bloody good!!! Sorry ate the evidence.

The new restaurant is amazing. The food was excellent and so was the service. If you're looking for a great pub meal this is the place to go.
