Nice traditional fit out but only just adequate food and beer selection.

The food & staff are first class, but as it's so popular it's so rowdy then they've got TV volume up, can't hear yourself think

Booked in for a couple of weekend visits en-route to visiting friends in Blue Mountains in March 2024, on advice of some friends who used to live in Sydney. Check in was easy and very friendly, walk into bar and they seem to know exactly why you are there (maybe it's the big travel bags huh?). We stayed int eh KING room, to give us some space, and loved the space we had for bags and hanging spaces in wardrobe. ON 2 stays, we got 2 different, but similar rooms, Rm 3 and Rm 4. Rm 3 is the corner on King Street/Logan Lane, with a great cross breeze when all 3 windows open, but a little more noisy as it faces the main road intersection. Room 4 just as spacious facing St Peters train station, maybe a little more quiet. Windows open in either room certainly showed how 'downtown' this place is, bustling road and train noise in both. Ear plugs supplied in both rooms. If you are noise sensitive, maybe another hotel a better choice, we didn't notice. Transport VERY simple with St Peters immediately over Lord Street only a few meters from the door. For 2 of us from SYD airport it was cheaper to UBER (AUD22) than use train (AUD19 each!).Offer a good discount for booking direct (as has become normal) in owner-operated hotels globally, so give them an email/call to beat any online rate.

Andre is a legend. The team are great

Great time watching the UFC. Good food and drink and the prices were acceptable. The guy who was delivering drinks and bussing the tables (Charlie) was super friendly and made our table super happy.

I had a great experience when I ordered my steak. 🥩 I had ordered a medium steak and it was a bit well done but the staff immediately changed the steak and also offered me a free beverage while I waited! Excellent service! Couldn’t be happier with my steak. I’ll be back soon!

Good food and beers on tap

The Tastiest Spice Bag South of the Equator!!!

We spent one night here before moving into our new apartment. This is a traditional style Australian pub. The rooms are quite compact and there is shared bathroom facilities in the hallway. The rooms also do not have air conditioning, so it can be quite warm in the summer. Even still, the rooms are rather well appointed with modern amenities.|The pub itself is lovely and so is the food. We had a couple of drinks and a meal. The staff are friendly and very good at what they do.

Overpriced

It's our local. Food is always great, service is fast and friendly.

+ Tasty Sunday roast accompanied by a perfectly poured Guinness - ‘’Run out of Yorkshire Puddings.” You don’t have to grow them, it’s just batter. Come on Chef, don’t let the team down like that? I left there disappointed and ripped off. Won’t go back for fear chef is unable/can’t be bothered to put together a complete dish.

Always good to visit but especially on draw night

Good local pub down the St Peters end of Newtown/King St. Good meals and good service.

Good food. Good prices :-)

Great pub but i wish you couldn't book tables. So many times I can't sit anywhere because all the tables are booked. First come first served ftw The spice bag is amazing. It seems like it would be easy to do a vegetarian version of it. If you did my friends would love it.

We had lunch in the pub, great lunch

Apparently what used to be a dog friendly pub now kicks people out for having a small dog asleep in a bag. Food is nominal to below average, and simply overpriced for the quality. Only real plus was the “puppy friendly” status and now that that is no longer the case there is no reason to pretend there is anything special about this place.

NO LONGER DOG FRIENDLY. Disappointing, luckily there's plenty of choices around.

Best local in St Peter's

Came here for lunch on a Thursday. The sign reads “Counter meals and cold beer”, a promising start. Within an hour, I’d decided this is my type of local. Modern pub fare, well-executed. Just the type of stuff you want in a pub (KFC halloumi? Yes please!). Great fit out, friendly staff, cool playlist. Beer was indeed cold… and fresh, from clean lines. Steak was perfectly cooked. Café de Paris butter was more of a curry butter, but nonetheless delicious. Burger was a modern twist of Aussie/Americana. On offer but not tried are tacos, nachos and pub classics like Shepards Pie. QR Code ordering for those who prefer it. Must try. I’ll be back! Apologies for the crummy pics!

My local. Good beers and food. Great atmosphere.

Great Sunday roast - the roast beef melted in your mouth, veg was well cooked, the Yorkshire pudding huuuuuge. Cheap pints also.

Best pub in the inner west. Best staff, best food and best Guinness

Only stopped in for 1 drink but was nice setting, crowd and atmosphere

Accomodation review - nothing really wrong with the place given the price point. But the cheaper price means that creepy old blokes lodge here. I encountered the same phenomenon in Europe, where you go to a hostel ostensibly intended to attract young people (like this pub, given the decor) but the price also draws in creepy old blokes. Obviously places can’t discriminate, and they shouldn’t, but worth noting. Besides that, comfortable bed, shared bathroom, wifi. Close to the station means an easy journey into Sydney, but also means you wear earplugs at night. No aircon but the ceiling fan takes the edge off the heat. Why did I stay here? I wanted to run the parkrun, and it’s close to mates in the inner west, the city, and the airport. Would I stay again? Maybe. The creepy old bloke factor is probably why I wouldn’t, but I’m not sure the pub can do anything about this. Else, no worries. All good. Worth giving the place a go I reckon. (I also had dinner in the pub one evening, good steak and staff were kind.)

Friendly staff, great beds, clean facilities, nice location on King Street

Lovely pub on King Street.

PUB.. SQUISITO! Sono entrato qui per mangiare per due domeniche di fila. Il cibo è buonissimo e sono molto efficienti come servizio. Il menù offre diverse possibilità così da permettere a TUTTI di riuscire a mangiare. Anche senza glutine. Da provare!

Clean rooms at a great location.

Location! Location! This must be the Place! Lots of room in the dining up front for yummy burgers and steaks. Located right next to St Peters Train Station this is worth noting. Friendly bar staff and brews on top. Located in an an area that seem to be at the end of King Street this is One of the gems of Newtown that won't cost you the earth.

The place I love to stay when in the area, clean facilities & close to everything, great service behind the bar even though they were under the pump.

Rude staff

Hands down the best pub in the Inner West. We've been regulars there for years and always super friendly staff behind the bar, great food coming from the kitchen (their sirloin is contender for best pub steak in Sydney!) and always a fun crowd of locals. Prop yourself up at the bar, which by the way, has to be one of the best bar-tops in Sydney and enjoy a drink or two. Oh, if you can find a friendlier front door security guy in Sydney, then hats off to you, because there can't possibly be one! Without doubt one of my very favourite pubs ... anywhere in Australia. Cheers SPH, we'll be back very soon. 🍺🍷🥩🥃

Really awesome food, beef brisket nachos are to die for , a condiment station with a range of mustards and hot sauces (why don't more places do this), great service and on the edge of the park if you feel like a run after drinking their excellent range of beers

All round WINNER, we have here. Super comfortable beds and linen in a spacious room. Lovely bath and shower products, free snacks, and super nice service from dude at the check in counter. I'd absolutely stay here again!

Really nice room at a good price. Staff were lovely and welcoming. Free snacks, water & toiletries on arrival. Comfy bed. Also have room service so no need to go down go the pub for dinner which I appreciated a lot!

Best food I’ve ever eaten at a pub. Highly recommend the Sunday roasts, chicken parmi, and the calamari. Absolutely phenomenal. My bank account is crying but my tummy is happy.

Proper pub with decent Guinness and grub.

Only stopped in for a beer. Nice old style pub with friendly service.

Renovate and triple your prices. They have cocktails that are barrel aged using ingredients that are never in a barrel. One of those places that adds words to add $20. Food was not great and was sick the next day from the nachos. Would be good if they went back to pub basics and reasonable prices until then go elsewhere.

Great location... very original.. interesting heritage history

Love this spot! My friend and I have started coming here for Sunday roast and to watch UFC. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Their Sunday roast is delicious and a solid portion size!

A nice place for a drink great service

Best steak sandwich Ever ! Fresh , tasty and tender just the right size for lunch . And friendly staff Thankyou Will , gold medal to the Chef !

Stanze pulitissime, pub ottimo e servizio eccellente. Zona servita da qualsiasi tipo di negozio e trasporto pubblico. Eccellente base per visitare Sydney, super consigliato.

Small and cosy

Friendly staff, clean and stylish rooms. Shared bathroom is nicely set up. The best news is that there is a pub downstairs. Traffic noise may upset some, but for a cheap and cheerful place to stay in a great part of town, this is a fine option.

Really lovely little pub down the south end of king with one of the worst parmigiana’s I’ve ever had. $30 for that mess is crazy.

Have a great time in this time of being pleasant and entertaining as well

I was in the bar. Staff friendly snack foods were good

One of the most friendly pubs I’ve ever been to. Great food, amazing staff, fun atmosphere - what else could you possibly want?

Just a quick overnight stay. Pretty above average for a pub room. Rooms quite from pub, but wasn't a busy night. Only really other guest doors opening and shutting was loud. Building a little old but definitely clean and tidy. Meals were good and location wad too... st peters train station next door and good walk through Sydney park.

Great Guinness, great service, above average staff/management

Delicious nachos!

Such an amazing hotel. Very cute rooms, lovely thoughtful interior design and so clean! Also the staff were exceptional, from the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and super accommodating. The best hospitality staff we experienced in all of Newtown! We will definitely stay here again and have recommended this hotel to friends and family. Also the added bonus of a fantastic pub downstairs!

We just ordered 5 GF entries which are all so delicious. If you're not concerned about cross contamination definitely come. Old style pub hotel. Cute . Staff so friendly

Such good vibes and a revamped menu that has delicious options for vegans. Plus an epic sauce / condiment bar so fun

Amazing pub vibe; but the food is somewhat a disgrace. 30 dollars for a Parmi, which is just two chicken thighs put together. Please do better. Absolute robbery. I’d highly recommend warrenview hotel for a proper feed rather than here.

Great atmosphere at this pub, bar staff are friendly and chill, pub food is mid-price but tasty (I recommend the buttermilk chicken schnitty), crowd is a good mix of all sorts

We booked a superior double room and were very pleasantly surprised by the spacious area. It was right over the main dining area and fronted on to King Street, yet it was incredibly quiet (I assume double-glazed windows).|The bed was king-sized and very comfy with plenty of great fluffy pillows.|The weather was quite warm and unfortunately, the ceiling fan was the only means of cooling the room but I suppose another fan may have been available if we had requested it.|I had overlooked the fact that it was a shared bathroom, but it turned out to be quite close by and it was OK. My wife and I had no waiting times to use either the shower or toilet (both were exceptionally clean and well-maintained).|The food in the restaurant was huge servings and delicious.|High 5 to Peggy who checked us in and was cheerfully welcoming and very helpful.

Nice place for a beverage or two. Staff is very helpful 👍

Beautiful building, clean rooms and bathrooms, ultimately a really great stay! Looking forward to returning.

STAY HERE IF YOU CAN! Affordable, perfect little rooms above a good vibes local pub. Fantastic old building with modern amenities, updated really cutely with super helpful staff! 10/10 would visit again!

Guiness on tap

Just a great place to stay - awesome staff, nice and comfy facilities, easily-reachable location, welcoming atmosphere, free water and snacks… :)

Food is fantastic some of the staff not all are polite and professional and friendly Good pub, good grub, reasonable price Busy on a sat and Sunday avo. I heard the subday roast dinners are excelt but were not on when I was there

We’ve eaten here a few times, we usually pick a pub for a cheaper meal early in the week. Beef burger, chicken burger, sausages, steak sandwich, nachos all have been good here, probably at the higher end of pub pricing but not outrageous. Wine prices are expensive for a pub, and not much choice, there was a Pinot Grigio or Gris for $45 and the rest start at $52, that’s expensive for a little pub in St Peters. That’s why the 3 stars. We can get a bottle of wine as cheap as $28, but most pubs we go to are in the $30-$38 range at the cheaper end. I think the General Gordon starts at $30 no wonder it’s packed all week. I have to say the beef burger & chicken burger were better here than the GG. I must say the barman knocking the back of my chair every time he walked past was annoying on a quiet night

We stayed here for a night away and not only was the accommodation clean and inviting but the service from Calvin and the team was above and beyond. The friendly vibes and his attention to detail is something rare that you don’t see much. Would recommend this place if it was for a night away, a meal or a drink! Cheers guys 🍻

Was good

Best parmigiana I’ve ever had, awesome staff and the beer is always as crisp as a billy Connolly one liner 👌🏻
