About Us – Alma Hotel

Built in 1856 in the heart of Willunga

Welcome to Alma Hotel, where every brick has a story to tell. Nestled in the historic town of Willunga, our hotel is a living testament to the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the 19th century. Step inside and immerse yourself in a world where history, charm, and modern hospitality converge.

The Alma Hotel: Where Every Brick Has a Story

A Stonemason’s Masterpiece

In 1856, English stonemason William Toll laid the foundation for what would become an iconic symbol of Willunga – The Alma Hotel. Built with precision, passion, and vision, the hotel stands tall today as a testament to Toll’s craftsmanship and dedication.

Willunga’s Bustling Past

Founded in 1839, Willunga quickly became a thriving slate mining hub. As Cobb and Co coaches rumbled through the town, The Alma Hotel provided solace to weary travelers. Though the echoes of horses and the bustling energy of yesteryears have faded, the stories remain, ingrained in the walls and cobbled paths.

A Vision Expanded

By the late 1800s, the hotel expanded upwards, offering panoramic views of Aldinga and Port Willunga. From its balcony, guests could soak in the captivating sights of the surrounding landscape, making it a favorite destination for travelers and holidaymakers.

The Enigma Behind The Name

The name ‘Alma Hotel’ has long piqued curiosity. Some believe it commemorates the valor of Englishmen in the 1854 Battle of the Alma, while others think it may be inspired by a beloved lady named Alma. In Latin, Alma translates to ‘good’ and ‘true’ – a fitting description for our venerable establishment.

A Hotel of Many Hats

Over the years, The Alma Hotel has donned many roles – a morgue, coroner’s court, refuge for shipwrecked immigrants, a salon, and even a dental clinic. Its versatility has only added layers to its already rich history.

Spirits of The Alma

Whispers of the paranormal have always surrounded The Alma Hotel. Visitors speak of friendly apparitions, mysteriously moved items, and a certain warmth by the fire in the front bar. A clairvoyant in 2013 even confirmed the presence of three benevolent spirits, adding a mystical dimension to our story.

Transient Leadership

Our legacy is long, and our leaders many. Take a glimpse at the licensee board in the front bar, and you’ll find a curious fact from the 1970s – some held the reins for merely a few days!

Your Experience at Alma

At The Alma Hotel, the past blends seamlessly with the present. We’re not just a hotel; we’re a chronicle of stories, experiences, and memories. Whether you’re here for a bus group tour, a private function, a meeting, or simply to soak in history – we promise an unforgettable experience.

Enjoy your time with us, and remember, every corner you turn has a story waiting to be told.

Always nice food, reasonable prices and good service. Recommend.

Extended wait time for poor quality food. 6 adults & 4 children will not be returning there despite it being the nearest place to where we live.

Great meal once again with great service

Old country pub. Friendly service . The food was good . Large portions so you won't be hungry. Good selection of tap beer. Salt of the earth patrions .

Terrible food, went as part of a group for Christmas Lunch. The two courses were unedible, tough turkey, mixture of uncooked and overcooked vegetables Christmas pudding, presentation poor. Overall disappointing.

To night we had the unfortunate experience of eating at the Alma not our first choice Moongarden was closed. I had the salt & pepper squid waited 25 minutes that's ok when it came out I thought that does not look like salt & pepper squid long thin strips of something covered in bread crumbs. there was no taste what so ever could have been any thing with no taste at all the chips were ok the salad basic and a bit soapy tasting after saying all that I ate every thing as I hadn't eaten since about 11am this morning. my wife had the panfried Barramundy which she said was very tasty that was it left most of the chips and salad. we have eaten there many times over the years and have had a the odd meal but this takes the biscuit we wont be going back.

It would be nice if there was service who wanted to be at work! Sour looking person telling she was was working alone. I didn't ask for her life story. She slammed my incorrect drink on the bar. I went to the front bar, waited a while to get served for the correct drink after 3 times in the restaurant. 'What is in the vegetables? ' 'Just vegetables ' 'Ok' 'Any bread?' 'No' 'Ok' I was served a burnt half serve of schnitzel, pot of congealed sauce, half of bottle dressing on some salad . With a pot of salt on the burnt chips. All I had to leave.. $22.90 for a memorable lunch that I avoid in the future..

Had a really enjoyable lunch, pricing was really good, food was amazing, will definitely recommend and go back again

Just had dinner there. Roast pork. Didn't eat it all. It was chewy 1thin slice of burnt pumpkin and couple of over over cooked vegetables. And there were 2 people forgotten and got there's when everyone had finished. I could just go on. Never again. Wish I could post a photo...

Dogs and horses on all TV’s, vegetarian cauliflower steak was all it was, NO other vegetables at all… really try a bit harder boys, it’s not hard !!

Had barramundi with veg and salad, huge serve fish, very tasty homemade tartare. Would recomend for sure.

Went there with family and friends. Food was actually really good this time, due to past experiences havent been. Was told there was a new chef on, and let me say you can definitely tell the difference. Past experiences food has been bland and cold. Waiting times was just ridiculous. This time Food was well presented. Wasn't cold. Didn't wait long. The server Michelle was absolutely amazing. She was very welcoming, introduce herself. Service was outstanding. Whatever you are doing please keep it up. From now on I will now be ringing up to see which chef is on before I come in. Whoever he is, he is definitely a keeper. Maybe you should look at revising your kitchen staff. Thankyou 😁

We really enjoyed the TBone specials last Monday.... it was a lovely evening and experience Thanq

Tonight was my second time having a meal here. Both times have been fantastic. Great food, good atmosphere and great service. The woman in the busy food area tonight was fantastic. Apparently the chef was the second string, my meal was delicious, thank you. Next time I'm in area this will be my first stop. Gotta feeling the bar guy has played a few footy games. Cheers.

T bone steak, worst I have ever had. Gristle all the way through. House glass of red wine on the menu… out of stock House glass of something else red on the menu… out of stock I’m guessing all they want to do is pull beers for the locals.

Lovely food and nice staff but it's just so insanely bright inside. Will come back when it's warm enough to sit outside!

Had my grandson's 21st birthday dinner there...the meals were delicious ...would definitely recommend for anyone to go there...

Great place great service food is unbelievable a must stop

A very pleasant place to enjoy lovely pub food. The service was most friendly and again encouraged us to revisit.

Well well well, the Alma hotel hey? My family and I have lived in willunga for the last 20 years and have an appreciation for local food and service. We have had many great meals in the past at the Alma hotel however we visited tonight and had the worst we’ve ever had in any local restaurant. My partner is a hospitality worker and knows better than anyone the pressure put on kitchen staff during a busy period however the wait on the food was ridiculous. Our table waited for roughly an hour and the table next to us who ordered at a similar time were waiting for much longer. Onto the quality of the food. The marinara pasta was just plain pasatta straight out of the jar, completely flavourless. Not a herb or flake of salt in sight. The cauliflower dish was just cauliflower cooked 3 different ways but so bland with little variation on the plate. The lamb korma curry was so bland that it was inedible. We love our community and had high hopes for our local pub but unfortunately the entire experience was a let down. Credit to the floor staff for being lovely and holding the floor. This review comes from an appreciation of food and service. We hope the Alma hotel management takes this constructively.

Damian, Terry and the staff were so accomadating with a last minute large booking over the weekend, such friendly amazing service. Nice food and atmosphere. Look forward to the next time. Thank you 😊 Stacey from CTTG

Food great, service better that expected and great time was had by all

Excellent food in a lovely pub restaurant. Lots of vego options. Solid value. Attetive staff. We will be back

I went for a meal with my husband, son and daughter in law. Every meal was cooked to perfection. The service was great. Me and my husband are over 60 and was very impressed to find a seniors menu. They are alot cheaper and smaller serves which is great as sometimes meals can be way too big and alot gets wasted. Oh yes....not to forget, it was a very cold day and we got the table right next to the fireplace. Will definitely be going again.

Friendly staff , gr8 location ... Wasn't sure about Cornflakes on my Garlic Prawns 🦐 😕 ... Live music 🎶...

100% my favourite regular pub! Quiet, no blaring music, Exceptionally great food, friendly staff, old architecture but very clean and well maintained, never large crowds.. what more could you ask for at a pub!

Beautiful

Nice pub meal for good price in nice surroundings

Had a lovely afternoon listening to some live music on Sunday. Great bar staff and awesome ☕️ coffee! Nice and relaxing.

Great dining room, no blaring music. A shame our meals were cold.

Definitely the best country pub in Adelaide! Entrees, perfect home-made pasta Rest of the day cooked to perfection with beautiful vegetables, fresh! And the sticky date pudding was to die for! Eric Eric the chef is fantastic! Bar staff, hilarious. Excellent service Wait, staff, adorable 10 out of 10

Okay not lying but found the best beef schnitzel! Was think and perfectly crumbed! Next time I want a beef schnitzel I'll be back! I had the beef Hawaiian but wish I just had it plain as it was so good it didn't even need that topping! Nice winter vibes, wood fires on very quite but shouldn't have been when the foods that good!

Can here for a meal waited over an hour not happy

Nothing more to share great meal everything do it again in a heart beat

Brilliant country style pub. Good atmosphere, good staff a beautiful food.

Whilst staying at McLaren Vale for a few days (March 24) we had two meals at the Alma. Service was excellent and friendly. I quite enjoyed both meals. They were large, flavoursome and well prepared. Overall much better food than most Adelaide Hotels. Pricing quite reasonable.

This hotel is the most fantastic weekend place to drive to. We love it. My chicken schnitzel covered 2/3 of the plate. Could have fed us both, veg was great too. My husbands beef schnitzel was more like a piece of tender rump with crumbs, he said its best to date. Will be back for Motjers day. Staff are the best Thanks to the hotel for always giving us great service and beautiful food. Its aleays worth the drive x

Greeted by a lovely young lady at the dining room bar. Water brought to our table on arrival without us having to ask ✔️ Our rather large meals were served hot & delicious. Food & drinks were well priced. Very happy 😊

Nice pub, food was a bit average had the chicken parmi, bland no real spices or herbs, $29 pork chop looked ok but salad limp dead and lifeless. Wont be back pity because two years ago it was quite a good feed

As a local resident of willunga I am appalled with the transition in new ownership. No longer feels like a place I can enjoy. The past couple of times I have attempted to go in, I and multiple others have been rejected service and entry due to them believing we were apart of other groups that were causing a ruckus earlier in the day. Even tho we have been coming here regularly. Just to be clear we weren’t apart of this unknown group causing a ruckus

Would have liked to sit in “Beer Garden “ well that’s a joke.Just cement. It was sooo full of smoke couldn’t stand it !

Wonderful gem of old school hospitality and a quirky unique menu that we thoroughly enjoyed We'll be back

We had lunch with a group of aged care residents. The meals were of a good portion and enjoyec by everyone. Service was good too. We'll be back.

Good feed friendly staff and patrons

Wow!, First off came in and was greeted very kindly by a lady with tattoos, wish I got her name because her service was top tier! Our family came down for lunch and I wasn’t expecting anything crazy for a pub but WOW! The food is great! Everyone was happy, I got a beef snitzel and I was AMAZED with the quality of the beef! and chips are great and crispy. Would definitely come again and recommend!

Really sweet place, met Tuka she's a sweet dog and Tyler is awesome. The staff were very laid back... Maybe it was just a quiet night or the locals didn't know how to take us lol. The menu was great, we schnitzels must have been tempura? They were massive just a shame it had barely any salad... Enjoyed the pool table and keen to go back.

Waited 2 years to return. But for tonight's fun , table for 2 and they totally forgot one meal! 3rd strike I'm done At least 2 other decent pubs in town.

A very pleasant lunch with huge serves of well-prepared food and excellent service. The serves could have been smaller believe it or not as my wife and I do not like to waste food - that said, take out containers were supplied. Unfortunately is was VERY noisy, but understandable given it's lunchtime at a pub, but choose your time I guess.

Lovely country pub great food and drinks and friendly service with friends

This is not the first time here. Service was slooooow. Meals came out missing ingredients. Cold and under cooked. 1 waitress for the bar and serving food. Lift your game ALMA

Expensive beers, poor quality of food and serving size. Wait to be served was longer then anywhere else

The staff are friendly and the food was fantastic

Meals were amazing ( not listed on this site-new Chef) Service was efficient and friendly Thoroughly recommend the chicken roulade and marinara pasta The ribs looked awesome too

We enjoyed the most amazing lunch today at the Alma. The new chef is delivering exceptional food which is presented beautifully and tastes amazing. Service was friendly and helpful. Thankyou ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The meal is of good quality.

Great food and service. Thanks Alma.

Enjoyed a great meal here today, the meals are generous and well priced. Chris, (CJ) the manager and his staff made us feel very welcome and we're attentive. Best schnitzel in the Fleurieu, very possibly!!!

Great food and service will be back for sure

Have been here multiple times and the food has always been slightly above average. Obviously with a few bad outliers every so often but that's normal for most pubs. However, they have changed their menu to be more fancy. Ordered the only steak on the menu House cut, chips and salad (requested chips and salad). Supposed to be rump steak. Ended up getting a thick chunk of essentially dog food. It was the worst cut of beef I have ever seen. I managed to slice a 1cm bite out of it and the rest was cooked as requested but it was all gristle. No joke. It wasn't a little bit of gristle, the ENTIRE cut was gristle. So for $35 I received a chips and salad with a chunk of beef no one would eat. The chips were great. Salad was seasoned and dressed well Steak.... I say dog food but frankly I wouldn't even feed that to my dog. The last time. Pre menu change. The steak was fantastic. My favourite local establishment. That has changed and most likely will not be coming back unless I hear about significant improvements. Service 9/10 Atmosphere 6/10 Food 1/10

Brilliant service, fantastic food, amazing Atmosphere.

Had the Korean burger that wasn't. No taste of anything Korean. No Kimchi, Korean chilli sauce, there was about 2 drops of chipotle sauce but at the end of the day it was just an average chicken burger

This is a lovely hotel, friendly efficient staff and good meals. They cope well with large groups too so great to celebrate an event. Sometimes have entertainment.

Attended a large function but the staff didn't know how to coordinate with the function organisers as to what should be served at what time. Fish and chips meal came with roast dinner vegetables which arrived stone cold (salad would have been a better choice). Ice cream was served in melted state (served out too early).

Really good scotch fillet. Not a bad price either

The staff are amazing and atmosphere is welcomed with wood fires ind each room. My only concers was with the preparation of food from the chief. It needs twigging of the portions presented on the plates. Salads needs cucumber and tomatos etc. The chicken and beef was half to what you normally get at other restaurants Australia wide. Chips although very well cooked needs to be better proportioned, just add a little more. For the prices or a 4 to 5 star restaurant in a heritage pub we were expecting a meal to match. Will come back just feel the chief needs to execute the meals to a higher standard.

Service was really friendly and went above and beyond. Great food, well cooked and reasonably priced. Our first visit but it won't be our last.

Best sausages and mash I have had served with bacon and onion gravy

Friendly and helpful staff

It's not very often that you get greeted when you enter a pub these days, so to be greeted by 3 separate staff as we walked in and found a table made us instantly feel at home. Great service, good meal sizes and no overinflated prices. Would definitely come back again next time we're in the area. You can't go wrong with this classic country pub.

Lovely dinner with family. Enjoyed the lamb shank and the wines by glass were delicious. Sat near the heater which was lovely. We will be back. Thank you

Great country pub, great food great atmosphere country hospitality in our backyard

Had a wonderful lunch with friends...staff were lovely...food delish...we will be back...T 🙏💜💜💜

Nice friendly staff and good service. We popped in during happy hour, so drinks were a little cheaper. Had dinner too. Pretty good pub food I must say.

Thank you for our lovely lunch today. We'll be back again soon.

Meals were average

Food good, wine not good, no decent sparkling wine🤔

Great food and great service I went here today for lunch and the food was delicious and the staff are very friendly
