North Sydney’s Oldest Pub | Rag & Famish Hotel
About the Rag & Famish Hotel
The Rag & Famish Hotel is a historic landmark in North Sydney, occupying its current site since 1860. It holds the distinction of being North Sydney’s oldest pub still in operation today. Originally a single-storey structure with a steep thatched roof, it was known as the Sailors Return. In 1866, the eccentric Charles Bullivant purchased the establishment and renamed it The Rag & Famish Hotel, a name it proudly carries to this day.
The History of the Hotel
The Rag & Famish has a rich and colorful history. Its origins trace back to the mid-19th century, and it has witnessed significant changes over the years. Here are some key moments in its history:
- 1860: The original structure, known as the Sailors Return, was established.
- 1866: Charles Bullivant purchased the pub and renamed it The Rag & Famish Hotel.
- 1873: Thomas Casey bought the hotel and renamed it the North Shore Hotel.
- 1890: A devastating bushfire destroyed the hotel, but it was rebuilt in 1892 with the words “North Shore Hotel 1892” engraved on the first-storey wall (still visible today).
- 1920s: The hotel was renamed the North Star and leased to Tooth & Company, who later purchased it in 1934.
- 1975: George Calligeros purchased the hotel, and it remains in the family to this day.
- 1980s: The Rag & Famish became the second venue in NSW to be granted a 24-hour licence.
Charles Bullivant: The Eccentric Owner
Charles Bullivant, born in London in 1796, was a fascinating character. After serving in the British Army and commanding convicts in Australia, he retired and became a dealer of goods. In 1830, he became the licensee of The Three Crowns Inn in Sydney, where he famously dispensed the best rum in Australia. When he purchased the Sailors Return in 1866, he renamed it The Rag & Famish Hotel, a name shrouded in mystery and folklore.
Theories Behind the Name
There are several theories about the origin of the name “Rag & Famish”:
- Some believe Bullivant chose the name to reflect his disdain for the armed services, as “Rag & Famish” was a slang term for the Army and Navy Club.
- Others suggest it comes from the quote: “If you come here too often, you will waste all your substance and you will be in rags before you die.”
Rebuilding and Renovations
Over the years, the Rag & Famish has undergone several renovations and restorations:
- Bullivant’s Quirks: He raised the bar counter to resemble an apothecary’s dispensing department and even had a secret rum bar on the first floor for his most loyal patrons.
- 1892 Rebuild: After the bushfire, Thomas Casey rebuilt the hotel, adding the iconic engraving on the first-storey wall.
- Tooth & Co. Remodel: In the 1930s, Tooth & Company remodeled the hotel, opening up the first floor for dining rooms and bars.
- Modern Era: Extensive renovations have been carried out over the last century, but the external façade remains largely unchanged since the 19th century.
A Family Venue
Since 1975, the Rag & Famish has been owned and operated by the Calligeros family. It has become a beloved community hub, offering a mix of timeless décor, heritage charm, and modern amenities. The hotel is also known for its 24-hour licence, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

Great spot, great pie great atmosphere 👍🏻
Great place to go after work, staff are friendly, keen to see what their karaoke is like
We dropped in tonight for dinner with our family, omg the beef guineas pies are the best ever , service was amazing thanks for our enjoyable meal and drinks, we even bought a hat 🍻 cheers
Came to watch the Super rugby. Gave us the pick of the tvs to watch the game, great service and food
Good value for money. Food was great. Nice atmosphere out in the garden bar. And staff were friendly.
Always a good experience. Great diverse crowd, friendly staff, and a huge selection of beer on tap.
Great Guinness and pies
Good wee upgrade has rolled through here. Also the live singer was unreal. I had the lamb shank pie which was steller too
Pretty good meat pies
We found this pub while spending the weekend in North Sydney - it is a tale of two halves - good to sit the front and people watch - difficult to sit in the semi-enclosed courtyard as people are permitted to smoke even though others are eating - the schooners are expensive - the lamb shank pie was delicious the chicken and leek pie was OK- we found another pub close by - the Union - schooners much cheaper and no smoking inside allowed
Great pub with a bit of atmosphere in the middle of North Sydney. Pies are ridiculously good.
Banger atmosphere and lovely staff!!! Great selection of beers and perfect for watching some live sport.
Very reasonably priced meals and drinks. While the pies looked amazing, it was 34 degrees, so wev opted for pizzas and burgers. Special mention to the incredibly happy bar staff!
We were staying nearby and went here for dinner, at the pub. It was an interesting experience for us. Most of the seating is in the nice courtyard where patrons are also allowed to smoke, it also backs onto the pokie room where there is cigarette smoke coming from also through the shutters. Not a great option for my family esp when eating. Limited seating inside the pub itself. It was a comprehensive menu with potential, meals were nice yet bland. Probably well priced for what is generally expected these days. Service was great. Plenty of drink options at the bar.
Been drinking in this Pub since the 1980's always great staff and Atmosphere. Awesome outdoors areas out back and for traffic watching out front. Carlton Draught in the bar is awesome. Will continue to drink there 😀
Great pub for anyone working or visiting North Sydney. Great atmosphere friendly people and always a great vibe during lunch hours. Can sometimes take a bit too long to get your food even when the pub is empty.
Great pub and beer garden. Love that they allow dogs.
Burgers overcooked, chicken and leek pie overpriced for what it was. Used to be much better a few years ago. Also please do not get fried calamari…unless you fancy a $22 frozen-tasting & looking dish
The tall blonde behind the bar is not only the most incompetent person in Australian Hospitality history, but also the laziest. Wake up Jantima..
Way overpriced drinks and average food and dreadful service. $32 for a beer and a glass of wine. People behind the bar appear to not really wanting to be there and having to serve people is an inconvenience. Fish and Chips were $30.
Great pub. Yummy food. Happened to drop in on a Sunday afternoon and enjoyed the atmosphere. Will be back
Good range of beverage options. Clean toilets. Attentive security!
Visited here in December 2024 for the first time in years. Hasn't changed one bit which is good, a nice atmosphere. Location wise right near the new Victoria Cross station. Was quite busy during my visit, with the schnitzel quite good washed down with a good selection of beers on tap.
We really enjoyed our event, thank you
This place is always with a full of people. A perfect place to have saturday arvo drinks with goos friends. Their staff are very friendly.
$22 for the worst chicken pie I ever had. Never going again.
Very nice steak!
Great place for a drink, live music and catching up with friends. Excellent service.
キッズ向けメニューもあるのにキッズ向けに向かない席ばかりなのが残念。パブだからしょうがないか。
Most undercooked chips I’ve had in my life, no sauce on the salad and average parmi. Shocking considering the price of it and enough for me to right a loaded review. Although it was a decent atmosphere in the joint I’ll give it that.
its old pub so i like this place vibe but unfortunately food is not really great. Not a fresh not hot enough food. I order pizza but it looks like they used frozen instant pizza. I just ate half piece of pizza and left all 😂 Steak was so chewy and not hot 😂
Great place to have a pint. Beer was fresh and
Great food and service, I was at a chamber of commerce event and very impressed by the venue and food service.
Great traditional style pub. If you go try the pies - very nice!
I was kicked out of this venue for no reason. When I asked why the security guard said it was because he didn’t like seeing men dance together. I asked if he was homophobic and he said yes. Not a safe space
Welcoming from the moment you walk in. A fantastic place for lunch and the food was spot on.
Over 20 years since my last visit. Better than ever...
Another good local bar for a beer 🍺
Rag & Famish Hotel Review: A Disappointing Schnitzel Experience I had high hopes for the $25 chicken schnitzel at the Rag & Famish Hotel, but it left much to be desired. The schnitzel was thin and small, essentially just a halved and tenderized chicken breast. While the coating was nicely crunchy, the portion felt underwhelming. The salad was average, and the chips were thin, dry, and under-seasoned. Adding to the disappointment, sitting near the door meant dealing with exhaust fumes from construction trucks idling at the traffic lights, which really detracted from the meal. Not the best experience overall.
I found the service lacking from the beginning (Monday evening staff) and the food was, in my opinion, the worst I've encountered (Steaks here are horrendous) It might just be the lowest quality pub food available on the North Shore.
Helpful, friendly, professional servers.
Good grub and dog friendly even on a cold wet night we were warm under the gas heaters. Beef & Guinness pie ✅Parmi ✅
An old overpriced pub the steaks were good but that's like anywhere in Australia.
My boyfriend and I got kicked out (were literally having a chill time w our mates) because a boring song was going on during the Karaoke section, and I decided to close my eyes and laid my head on my boyfriend shoulder cos I was bored. The short security guy came to my boyfriend and sai WE ARE GETTING KICKED OUT because he saw me when i was closing my eyes. The security dude even didnt check up on me to see if i'm ok or what is going on. I then open my eyes looking sober, not drunk not drugged and he still told us to leave because that is it, no explanation, no giving a care if i was ok or not just wanted to kick us out cos I WAS CLOSING MY EYES FOR NO MORE THAN 10 SECONDS. I don't think that is how customers should be treated (not mentioning that we have paid for a few drinks already and waiting in queue to sing). ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CLOSE YOUR EYES FOR MORE THAN 10 SECONDS DONT COME HERE. would have left 0 start if possible. Plus the fact that he even didn't talk to me but my boyfriend -> he could be RACIST because i'm Asian and maybe to him I don't speak English because he didn't even explain a word to me but only to my white boyfriend and another white guy who was being nice and asked us if we are ok.
never again will my family of 4 ever visit this establishment again, came for dinner Saturday @ 7pm & was assumed to be inebriated by door staff and refused entry..... how embarrassing to be told by some self opinionated doorperson in front of my family..... ridiculous behaviour & shame on you.
A good old Sydney pub with meals that are generous portion sizes. But they're tasty too. Easy walking distance from the new Victoria Street metro station.
Really nice food and service
We are writing to express our sincere appreciation for the outstanding service and experience we had at your recent Christmas in July function at the Rag and Famish. As a company dedicated to exceptional customer service, we were truly impressed by the quality and professionalism demonstrated throughout our event. The warm welcome from the bar staff, the exquisite food, and the engaging entertainment all contributed to a memorable experience that not only met but exceeded our expectations. The private function venue provided an ideal setting, enhancing the overall enjoyment of our event. We wholeheartedly recommend the Rag and Famish. Thank you once again for an exceptional experience. Great vibes and venue for drinks and food. Open late. They have a nice beer garden area and some indoor seating. Good for medium sized groups. They have a good range of tap beers and other beverages. Their food is standard pub fare, on the expensive side. Overall facilities are nice and a short 12 minutes walk to the train station and 5 minutes to the bus. Parking is limited street parking.
A bar with a very historical atmosphere.
Upstairs fine dining was amazing....well done to the team.
Good craft beer list for north of the bridge, food ok, friendly staff
We used to love this place and go frequently when we were locals. Ate there last night and the menu has changed and food has gone down hill. Burgers don't match the pictures with salad missing. They are generous with there chips which is nice. What happens to the Korean chicken wings!?!?!
This is the worse food I have ever had at a hotel. It came out out in five minutes and my steak Fritts was raw. Will never eat there again.
A great lamb shanks pie - no wonder this place has such a good reputation for their pies.
Great little pub with very nice counter food. I had a really good chicken burger and my mate had the pie. Great spot.
Chicken parmigiana was underwhelming. Beer good, ended up getting Macca's on the way home.
Really great Atmosphere and this place obviously has got its food consistency right. I had the Parmi served with Chips and salad. My friends ordered the Nachos and pie. Really was great. Not humongous but just right.Service really friendly and a nice younger but mixed vibe. Live Music nice but a bit loud for dinner. I will be back to eat again.
Great place!
Really nice place to land for a relaxing dinner with a friend after flying into Sydney. Lamb was delicious, cookies and cream cheesecake was awesome, glad I didn't share it.
Great place, especially as it was my first time in Sydney and was famished the first night I was here. Was able to walk in and get a table for three upstairs no worries. The staff are attentive, friendly and warm. The food is top notch. Rump wagyu steak cooked to perfection and green beans was tasty which is saying a lot about vegetables. The Guinness was poured to perfection. Perfect night and a testament to Sydney's hospitality. Highly recommend.
Seemed popular. Staff seemed a bit stressed. Nice art deco features. Not messed with the architecture too much
