We have stayed at the East Sydney Hotel twice now when we travel to Sydney from FNQ. Not only is it conveniently located to the CBD, it is also comfortable and quiet. The service is always top notch at the bar and the food is delicious. We love the East Sydney Hotel!!! Dixie and Gavin

The location is a qualified 5 stars, the score is due to being located quite close to my home, but the venue... reminiscent of what corner pubs from the inner Melbourne & Sydney suburbs were once famous for. Striking a chord as being neither pretentious nor overly trendy, they require no gimmicks, possess no pokie machines, a fact that makes survival into the modern era quite remarkable. But the reason for 5 stars? It's their great menu, the live music in the form of a jazz trio, the range of boutique beer on tap, it's the experience that reminds you exactly why Sunday afternoons exist. Their staff are welcoming and warm, and they well earned the 5 stars, however I would happily have given more. Well done East Sydney Hotel, I wish there were more like you.

Here’s an updated version East Sydney has long been one of our favorite local pubs, but our recent visit was especially memorable thanks to Liam and Stewart behind the bar. Liam’s warm hospitality, sharp humor, and genuine conversation made us feel instantly at home, and Stewart was equally fabulous, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. While the rest of the staff has always been wonderful, both Liam and Stewart truly went above and beyond to create an exceptional experience. We look forward to returning soon – and perhaps making East Sydney our regular spot whenever they’re there

Nice pub with character. Super friendly staff and good house beers on tap. The food was decent too we had a lamb curry and a chicken schnitzel. The lamb curry was the best I’ve had in a while. Which was recommended to me by the female bartender would highly recommend

Stayed in the hostel nearby and I’d be lying if I said that this place wasn’t my local, I made friends with the local bartender named Liam and he made my stay in the area as pleasant as possible, he was great company and served me with a smile every time I came in. The food was amazing and my new friend liam made some amazing cocktails before my nights out in the city 😉. Next time I come to Sydney I’d seriously consider staying at the hotel.

A truly cosy yet vibrant gem in Sydney! The Negroni made by the manager (didn’t catch her name) was the best I’ve ever had ! Along with a steal having a beer and burger for $25 accompanied by fantastic live jazz. I’ll definetly be back!

Arrived mid arvo with kids. Bar staff saw this. Didn’t decide to tell us our kids were not allowed in the front bar section until 10 minutes after she delivered our cocktails. Not even in the middle section away from the bar. Thanks for wasting our money and time.

My wife and I recently visited this pub and must say it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a cozy atmosphere that perfectly blends modern charm with classic pub vibes. The highlight of the visit was the exceptional service provided by the bartender Liam. He was friendly, attentive and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. Liam made great recommendations, ensuring we tried some of the best dishes and drinks. His knowledge and passion truly elevated our experience!

Very nice pub in a nice part of Sydney. Not too uptempo or noisy which I really enjoyed. The staff at the bar were all really nice people too. Would definitely recommend stopping in for a beer or wine

The bedroom was clean, the bed and pillow were confortable. There were two toilets and a shower for a floor. However, that were clean as well.

As a local it's sad to say the food has drastically gone down hill. I used to love coming for the weekly specials (Monday steak night Tues schnitzel night) which I've been informed the chef has changed (as has the price) and its sad to say you can tell. The pork belly pizza we had was less than desirable we didn't even finish it. I also tried the schnitzel recently and it just doesn't compare to the previous menu and it's a lot more expensive. I also tried a bar snack" cheese and ham jaffle it came out like a warm bread sandwich very dissapointing. The happy hour is also confusing now there's a time for wine and beer and a separate time for cocktails."

El hotel esta bien para el precio que tiene y la ubicacion donde se encuentra es centrica. Esta cerca de la catedral, y los transportes publicos al lado. Tiene un supermercado Metro, restaurante Toki y cafeteria Bohãus muy cerca. El mismo hotel tiene Bar Restaurante para comer y tomar alguna cosa. Dos plantas sin ascensor. En la habitación hay una nevera pequeña, WiFi gratis, aire acondicionado y la TV es grande. Las camas están bien y la habitación limpia. El personao luy amable. En las zonas compartidas se encuentra un saloncito para relax 2ª planta, tienen un espacio para  cafe, infusiones y agua 1ª, el lavabo hay uno en cada planta y tiene lavadora, gel, champu, acondicionador y crema hidratante. Le faltaria un secador de pelo. Si tienes las ventanas cerradas el ruido de la calle no se nota mucho. Despues de hacer el check-out, dejamos las maletas y no tuvieron problema en guardarlas hasta la tarde. Le falta un poco de mantenimiento.

Convenient and clean, with friendly and helpful staff—not only was it great to stay as a guest in the accommodation, but it was also welcoming to visit the bar. It made my trip to Sydney even more wonderful!

Accommodation, top floor. Six nights. First off I really wanted to give five stars because affordable character accommodation is becoming so hard to find. So while there is heaps of character and it is cheap...my stay could have been better! My room was nice. Large and filled with light from two big windows (which due to the style of window, let in all the street noise too)I had ear plugs so not a problem for me. Lots of storage, a comfy but weirdly low bed, a disintegrating antique leather chair, a side table, bed side lamps, TV, fridge, heater, and a very vigorous wall fan. Carpet was stained in several places, but overall room did appear clean and fresh. Adjacent to my room is a communal dinning area and bathroom (with a broken washing machine) Check in was friendly but minimal, with no info about facilities, or the neighborhood, or even what entertainment or food specials were on at the bar downstairs. No info in the room either. Room was not serviced at all during my six night stay. Which I'm okay with. Though having a fresh set of towels and bedding at least once would have been appropriate! Cleaning as mentioned the room was not serviced during my stay. I left my rubbish bin bag, once full, outside my door as instructed. It was still there the next day. Bathroom, shower had not seen a deep clean in sometime. And I don't think the bathroom was cleaned during my stay as the same long black hairs remained on the floor! Location is great, walking distance to many of Sydney's finest attractions. Plus, close to public transport. Also there were nice details, like board games, and historic books and magazines in the antique furniture in the common areas. There was tea, coffee and water available in the common areas, and milk was supplied in the room fridge. Body wash, shampoo and conditioner and hand wash supplied. As a single traveller would I stay here again? Probably, but please up the cleaning standards! Cheers.

August 2024. Stopped for a steak and a few beers whilst in the ‘big smoke’. Lovely character to the hotel. Didn’t use any of the accommodation but did eat food and drink beer. Great vibe inside the pub including cool jazz. As it was a balmy end of winter day in Sydney outside was buzzing with patrons and very pleasant sun set to watch. Steak was fine, salad lovely and chips were.. well chips! Loved my experience. You will to.

Really disappointing. What could have been a ripper, one of the cool old school bars with tons of history, was such a disappointment with sour, grumpy staff. Zero chance of me spending another cent in there. Avoid the place.

Location was perfect, super close to everything. Staff were also lovely and very accomodating. However, the rooms were not clean at all. There were cockroaches throughout the room and a fake eyelash on the bed when we arrived, which made me question whether or not they had cleaned the sheets prior to our arrival. The room comes with a shared bathroom. We found underpants on the floor the first night that were not ours. Pub down stairs really noisy till 2am.

The rooms were nice and the staff were really friendly and it was really cheap. It‘s hard to sleep there though, since lots of cars drive past which isn’t the hotel’s fault.

Cozy little pub in the heart of Sydney! Was there for winter solstice, but they didn't bother to have the mulled wine available which a few of us found a little strange as the urn was on the bar and all. Ordered the pork belly pizza which was a little underwhelming and it seemed to take alot longer to arrive at our table than everyone else meal that was ordered after mine... other than that it's a nice place with a pretty good beer selection and the fireplace makes for a great atmosphere!

The food was below average . Burger patty was dry and tough , fries were almost fluorescent yellow as if the oil hadn't been changed in days . The Greek salad was far from what I would call a Greek salad , with crummy sliced black olives the kind you get on really cheap pizza . And not cheap either

We sneak a couple of nights away twice a year and stay at the East Sydney Hotel because of the awesome price, perfect location and atmosphere. Close enough in any direction to access public transport, amazing little eateries & a couple of cocktails by the Harbour watching the sun go down. We’ve found the staff always super helpful & welcoming. Only a short stroll to the Domain & Hyde Park.

Delicious pork belly, perfect match with their frozen Pina Colada. Portion of food was a bit small to my liking though but it didn’t really affect my experience. Service was excellent with friendly and funny bartenders. Special commendation for Leah the singer on Thursday. Really talented and wish she sings there more.

Don’t come for the food, limit your visit to drinks. The food is subpar to say the least. Schnitty was cold, Sunday roast was extremely dry (and expensive), Greek salad wasn’t a Greek salad but just the salad they use on the side of every other dish. Not to mention the $6 extra chicken on the salad was tandoori chicken (no doubt used from the tandoori chicken burger). 3 stars because the pub itself is cute enough.

Visited with my friends and it was a lovely atmosphere! Food was very tasty and reasonably priced. Staff were very attentive and gave good service. We enjoyed the music and cannot fault the experience overall. I am already looking forward to my next visit.

Great stay - fab staff , made me feel super welcome

Have never stayed or eaten here, but it’s amazing for what it is - a proper little pub, no poker machines and basic, yet solid beers (few in house offerings), decor is something different and staff have always seemed friendly. Definitely a nice spot to grab some afternoon sun and have a few nice drinks.

Stayed in the hotel for 3 nights in February. Very simple with shared bathrooms/showers. No a/c in the room, just a fan. You got to keep windows open for fresh air but there's a pub downstairs and people stay very noisy till very late. WiFi is extremely slow. It takes like 30 min to download a 30mb podcast. Very old and authentic building. Pub is great. Very atmospheric. Great location. You're like 5-15 min walk from everything

There for the food. Overall: 5/7 Nice venue with decent vibes for a pub meal after sports nearby. Reasonably priced. Steak: 5/7 Average no frills steak that’s actually cooked as you order it! (Medium rare = medium rare). They do cut it up into slices for you which is a bit strange though. Mushroom sauce was good. Chips were crispy and fluffy. Mac and cheese: 3/7 Despite their fancy sounding name these were quite disappointing and overall lacked any flavour. Just a big ball of carbs really.

In Australien gibt es keine Privathaftpflichtversicherung und man muss sich gegen das Vergehen/Dummheit/Absicht anderer versichern! Der Besitzer kommt für die Entwendung meiner Sachen nicht auf! Er behauptet einfach ich lüge! Sehr sehr einfach sich auf diese unglaublich inakzeptable Art sich seinen Pflichten zu entziehen.||||Desweiteren ist die Unterkunft sehr dreckig. Eine der 3 Klobrillen wurde innerhalb von 10 Tagen am ersten Tag von einem Besoffenen vollgelullt und es hat dann am 6. Tag ein Gast geputzt, die anderen Klos waren auch dreckig, aber man hatte keine Urinspur als Beweis auf der Klobrille. Das Hotel wird nie gestaubsaugt. Die Zimmer nie gereinigt. Es wird nur der Müll gewechselt oder halt Dinge entwendet. Handtücher voller Flecken. Unglaublich unhygienisch. ||||Cleaning staff took one bag of belongings worth 1100 AUD and owner does not want to reimburse me!||Do not book. It is NOT safe. 20 steelings im that area a day police at the wharf said. Also the police will not help you if it happens again (minor issue) and Australia does not force the owners as in Europe to have liability insurance for staff to settle the issue. The owner does not care and just says I lie (within almost 20 years and 4 digit number of booking.com nights I have never been robbed in a property and being accussed of lying instead of reimbursement) I travel for 1 year so the items taken away were very important for the next 9 months of travelling!

Very pleasant meal

Great place for an after work drink. However the dining experience was underwhelming. The app to order at the table was one step short of asking for passport and drivers licence ID just to order some food. And it somehow added a $4 surcharge that was neither service nor card fee. Bar staff were not helpful on that front. Meal was pricey and oily - ended up paying $34 for a very average fish and chips through the app.
