OUR TIMELINE
November 2021
ODD CULTURE BOTTLE SHOP OPENS ITS DOORS
An extension of the Odd Culture Newtown bar offering, Odd Culture Bottle Shop swung open its doors shortly after, just two doors up. Curated by group beverage manager Jordan Blackman, it features an extensive range of organic and biodynamic wine, wild ales and lambic, natural cider, and sake. However, it’s not your standard bottle-o – the shop also offers a range of fermented goods and condiments, including pickles, vinegars, shrubs, and hot sauces from local producers.
October 2021
ODD CULTURE NEWTOWN OPENS
Highly anticipated since late 2020, Odd Culture Newtown opened its doors to the public on Saturday, October 29. Situated on Newtown’s famed King St, the venue concept is a hybrid bar/restaurant/cafe space with a cool and casual all-day vibe. An all-star team was rounded up to lead the venue, including head chef Jesse Warkentin (ex-Continental Deli), sous chef Caleb Venner (ex-Continental Deli), and Odd Culture Group’s Executive Chef James MacDonald (ex-Hubert head chef). The bar and cocktail program is led by Sam Paech (ex-Baxter Inn) alongside group beverage manager Jordan Blackman (ex-Chin Chin), with Katharine Crowe-Mai (ex-Rockpool) managing the restaurant and service.
March 2021
JAMES MACDONALD COMES ONBOARD AS GROUP EXECUTIVE CHEF
Odd Culture Group was lucky to onboard James MacDonald (ex-Hubert head chef) as its group executive chef. Prior to working at the French diner, MacDonald worked his way through several major Melbourne establishments, including Meatsmith, Luxembourg, and the Builders Arms Hotel. He also spent time at London institution St John. As the group executive chef, MacDonald was tasked with overseeing the group’s culinary direction, including revamping The Duke’s menu and creating a ferment-heavy menu at the Odd Culture restaurant.
January 2021
THE OLD FITZROY HOTEL ACQUIRED
Under the new Odd Culture Group name, the group took out a 20-year lease of the Old Fitzroy Hotel in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo in January 2021. The acquisition included a high-profile coup for the group as it secured Anna Ugarte-Carral (ex-Momofuku Seiōbo, Firedoor, Hubert, and winner of the 2020 Josephine Pignolet Young Chef Award) as head chef. Odd Culture Group was dedicated to maintaining the historic features of the pub while catering to its diverse clientele.
September 2020
THE DUKE ENMORE ACQUIRED
One might say acquiring a pub at the height of a pandemic is the very definition of madness, but not for Thorpe Hospitality. Former tenants James Wirth and Michael Delany left the building during lockdown after only taking over the pub in December 2018. Meanwhile, Thorpe Hospitality saw it as the perfect opportunity to add the pub to their growing list of venues. The group gave the Enmore local favourite a serious revamp, adding a greater selection of local beers, natural wines, stiff and strong cocktails, and classic Aussie pub grub.

Nice place to hang out. Food and beers were great.
Bijou and Artie are absolute gems of the hospitality industry and the Fitz is so lucky to have them
Lovely old bar I have been going to for over 30 years. The prices have shot up a lot recently though
Came here 3 years for a corporate event and the food was amazing. Went back in January 2025 and what a disappointment. Meat was quite expensive ($38) for what you get. Felt like a cheap piece of rubber. The pepper sauce was watery. Very disappointed. Won’t come back unfortunately.
Perfect local pub! didn't realize until we arrived that they also have a small downstairs theatre. Unfortunately tickets were sold out for the show, but would have loved to come for a drink, dinner, and show!
Great service and atmosphere. Food was all right. More vegetarian options would've been nice.
Service was perfect. Artie is the best. Amazing acts every week for comedy.
Last night enjoyed a wonderful (and reasonable) pre-theatre dinner at The Old Fitz before seeing a great play ( the duck paté and the ocean trout were outstanding!). Also appreciated the warm friendly service that was timed to enable us to enjoy our meal before the play. The Old Fitz never disappoints!
First time there today. Love the place. So nice to be somewhere that is not 'merivaled'. Great food, we ate in the bistro, great service. We will go back
A classic. Beautiful pub. Great drinks, space and vibes. The upstairs restaurant is elevated cuisine. One of the top authentic pubs in Australia.
This is a lovely location and sitting outside was amazing. The only criticism I have was the bar maid ignored me because i was on one side of the pillar at the bar and asked me to stand in front of her to be served. Couldn't she just walk to me? Only that the other polite customer asked me, weren't you before me? Have a no service in this area sign if you aren't going to serve people on one side of the pillar that's in the middle of the bar. It also wasn't like it was busy. There was literally me and this other lady waiting to be served. I think the barmaid just didn't want to walk too far. Also I was standing in front of those credit card machines on the bar so they clearly do serve on that side of the pillar. Very odd 🤔
Beautiful menu and wonderful service … we’ll be back for sure. Good food, very well prepared and presented. Several cuts above pub grub! Our menu guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drinks on offer.
I guess the joke was on me. As a vegan I was happy to settle for a plate of chips but on staff suggestion I order the “Japanese Squash”. How exotic!!! No - it turns out to be the stock standard Jap variety of pumpkin drowned in what tasted like gravox with a big clump of bread and tired vegetables all for $26.00😉
We recently held a large lunch event at the Old Fitz and I highly reccomend. The staff were brilliant and are incredibly accomodating, the food is wonderful and the venue itself is brilliant.
Great place, good atmosphere and staff were very attentive. Live jazz music was great!!
Went for lunch had high hopes, old authentic pub, staff was very good food not so much. Anchovy on a potato cake was ok as expected, the duck pate bland and not very nice, mains chicken Maryland and crispy pork belly, the chef forgot seasoning anywhere, chicken bland, veggies bland Yorkshire pudding soggy, pork belly tiny three pieces no crisp more chewy, all in all not great we live close eat out all the time won’t be back.
Lovely little local joint, we go the Sunday roast. It was good. Could’ve been better. A little on the cold side and no beef was a let down….
Delicious food and great service. The steak tartar was to die for. Highly recommend.
Watched the comedy show (every Monday 7pm), was great fun!! And even for free
We had the most marvelous family lunch yesterday upstairs at the Old Fitzroy. Our waiter was particularly helpful, attentive and knowledgeable. This helped to make our afternoon a relaxed family gathering where the hospitality took centre place. The French Bistro style cuisine is authentic and good value. The jazz music drifting drifting up, added to the ambience.
Fuimos por la noche de Stand Up. Las papafritas eran buenas y venían con una salsa buena. El recinto se nota antiguo y poco cuidado pero le da el estilo de su nombre.
What a cracking great pub! Exactly like a proper English pub. Fantastic menu. Mysterious theatre in the basement. Gothic looking bistro upstairs. Pumping crowd. We loved it.
Food’s always excellent quality & still at “pub prices”. The killer “MUST DO!” about this venue? Not only do they still host live music (hardly any inner east pubs still do), the BIGGEST rarity this venue delivers is LIVE THEATRE. It’s “beyond brilliant” they do this (almost no other Syd Pub does) & they’ve been doing it for DECADES, not “just a recent thing”. 10 million STARS for THAT alone. Support them every chance you get - we (plus our friends & visitors) definitely need this beautiful place to “stay strong & keep going precisely as it is” 🤩🥰😘😘😘🙏🙏🙏🎉🎉🎉✅✅✅👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 x
WENT FOR FITZ N FACTS, HAD THE BEST TIME - THANK YOU TO ARTIE, THEY ARE THE HOTTEST PERSON TO EVER RUN KARAOKE
I have only enjoyed this pub on a weekend during the day so I recommend it for a nice afternoon beer.
Banger pub! Beers on Sunday afternoon out the front is definitely the vibe.
Came for trivia. Did trivia. No complaints
Great place for a night out. Support local theatre!
A great spot with live music Sunday afternoon only gave three stars for food because I came specifically for the Sunday Roast which is highly rated when you Google it, My present says and tastes totally average. The serving is small compared with other pubs, I saw both the pork belly , 2 pieces and cruncy crackling, and I ate the chicken Maryland which is basically just a thigh. I wouldn't come back for the roast but I would come back for a drink
Great place although pricey for pub/hotel they’re (double) cheeseburgers and chips are excellent. Service was very friendly, polite and engaging. Bottle of rosé wine was expensive for a pub ($74), but was excellent. We highly recommend this place.
Charming and rustic - the roast was fab
I like the pub in general but would never eat there again!
A nice quaint little pub. Good food but a bit pricier than other pubs in the area. There was a band playing on Sunday arvo which was fun.
Great service, great food - awesome day! i would totally recommend as a great place to relax and chill with friends.
Good small pub for a Friday night
Can’t fault this place. Probably our favorite pub. Steak frites and natty wines? Be rude not to. Party down the bottom. Business up the top. And such friendly staff.
As a local, I’d say this is probably the best pub in Sydney Edit: came back 2 weeks later. Artie made us write this review, which is a testament to the quality of people here. Still the best pub in Sydney. Trivia is pretty good. Better than those mass manufactured trivia things!
Artie is an amazing trivia host and whenever I walk through the threshold of this place I feel better about myself so thank you 💕
when for lunch we were a bit sceptical as we approached the location (we aren't local) the food was delicious and the staff were friendly great little spot
One of the best burgers in Sydney. Great for a classic old suburban Sydney pub experience. Full of locals and an excellent vibe. Pop in for a schooner and a great time.
We visited this pub for a pre-show dinner on a Sunday. The service upstairs was excellent, attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, the food arrived lukewarm, which significantly impacted our enjoyment of the meal. The menu upstairs also felt somewhat limited, particularly since my craving for a burger wasn't satisfied – apparently, burgers are only available downstairs. Honestly, with such friendly service, I was expecting a more well-rounded dining experience upstairs.
Great vibes
I’ve eaten here before and it was great but this time was a real let down. The Christmas in July food was really poor overall. The starters were nice but the main was just overcooked lamb, undercooked “roast” potatoes and some Brussel sprouts. The dessert was just a bit weird - lemon posset with jelly and cream - perhaps supposed to be a modern trifle with a twist but not sure. There wasn’t value for money and was also a long wait for food. I did complain and the person in charge took some money off the bill, detailing they were a chef down, so I want to acknowledge that but I would recommend people don’t come for the Christmas in July menu - stick to the original one which I’ve never had any issues with before.
SO DISAPPOINTING & NOT WORTH THE PRICE! We went for the Christmas in July experience - $95 per head. The warmed cider was roughly 3 sips, the starters took over an hour to arrive, the main course was dry lamb with potatoes & brussel sprouts but given it was a xmas meal - there was no gravy / sides sauce. The lamb had a knife stuck out from the top which was so unappealing... The pudding was a runny lemon posset which tasted like a 5 year old made it. The whole experience would have been the equivalent of $30 - not $95!!! We also had a vegetarian with us who was served bread instead of the starters and a gnocci instead of a maincourse with sides. Yet she still had to pay $95... I'm so disappointed as the table with xmas decorations looked super cute, our table server was kind. Had high expectations given this was called out to be a 'experience' but unfortunately will be recommending friends not to go...
Such a vibey pub! The Sunday Roast was delicious we tried the Pumpkin and the Pork - both great, the starters were the stars of the show though. Live music and drinks were great.
This place has been a favorite of ours for years. Very real, decent food, great vibe.
A buzzy, interesting and friendly local for a delicious Sunday lunch. Book ahead or be disappointed. It gets very busy.
Great inner city pub for a drink
Went last night. The hamburger was one of the best I have ever had and I have eaten 1000's. The chips were wonderful crispy outside and soft inside. The atmosphere was reminiscent of neighborhood pubs 50 years ago. I f I lived near there I would be a regular.
As a local, I used to regularly drop in for a few drinks but that has since changed. $14 for a schooner of beer.. good thing there are other more affordable local bars in the area..
Classic old school pub with a 'cosy' front bar, with live Jazz on a Sunday afternoon, which was an amazing jazz quartet accompanied by a phenomenal singer! Perfect. The food was a let down. We had the roast pork and it was child-size portions at best. The pork was beautiful, but hardly any of it and we had to look very hard to find any roast veggies on the plate and at $33 a pop, we deserved adult size servings. $15 for a glass of very average Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir is pretty steep too. Our tip, go for the music and the tap beers, save your money for a Sunday roast elsewhere. It's a terrific front bar (tables out front too which will be prime real estate in summer) but the food and wine leaves you wanting.
Nice stout. The bar staff were good. The building is 😎 but needs some love.
The duck croquettes were lovely but unfortunately the roast dinner was a huge letdown. My pork roast arrived cold so I asked them to microwave it, however they said they could make another one. This roast also arrived cold which is disappointing when you’re paying $33. When the waiter took our plates, he asked how it was, I told him that unfortunately it was cold again- his response was ‘it couldn’t be I saw it come out the oven’, no apology or anything, just dismissal to the feedback…
Came for dinner based on good reviews. Food didn't come as ordered, asked for it to be fixed and came back wrong again. Veal was very fatty and chewy. They did apologies and adjust the bill though
Iconic Sydney pub, dog friendly and nice wine selection and outdoor area.
Live Jazz, awesome staff, great vibes and cosy warm fire in the winter. Love this place
Solid pub fare with a French twist.
A return visit, and still fantastic. Great food, great service, great spot. Anddd... as a bonus... a fannntastic play downstairs in the theatre: KING JAMES
Ardie is a very funny guy and Mark is great also
Nice place but $12.50 for a schooner? Sheesh!
The roast was excellent and a good size. Lively atmosphere and a Jazz band. Decent selection of wines by the glass
Went for Sunday roast and loved it! Great atmosphere, delicious food and wine selection. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back!
We Just had some beers there, friendly staff, especially a bartender who gave me the drinks! The place is quiet and relaxing, its quite lonely around it, even its available for outdoor seating. Its a good spot to share drinks and hang out whit friends.
Amazing pub with a charming old school vibe!
The backstory: My girlfriend and I moved into the area recently and have been checking out local pleaces. We were out on a late walk and figured we grab some dinner here as I'd read about it online and we wanted a pub dinner. The positives: The decor/atmosphere of the pub is awesome. Tucked away from the cross on a side street, coming down the hills with the city serving as a backdrop to this beautiful old pub was a great experience. The tables outside were well heated, the bar staff were lovely. There was a fire burning inside and the beer selection was great. The negatives: Were our experience became disappointing was with the food. A french menu marketed as being premium with the head chef named online and everything definetely seemed in keeping with the venue. The menu had four mains on it and a variety of entrees - great, I respect the boldness of going with four mains because there's nowhere to hide. We ordered two of the duck croquettes to start. My girlfriend ordered the rainbow trout main and I ordered the cheeseburger. The food arrived promptly but all of it was disappointing. The duck croquettes - I question the concept of these entirely. With something as rich as duck paired with a strong cheese before being crumbed as fried, there was nothing to cut through the richness. They were served with a hot sauce (not very in keeping with the French menu) and it just tasted like vinegar. It was overpowering rather than complimentary. The cheese burger - it contained two smashed patties, a sweet 'brioche style bun' and thick cut chips. Again, I question the stylistic choices made with this dish. Smashed patties are American, the pub cut chips Australian/ American again. If you're doing a cheese burger on a French menu, you think you'd go with pomme frite style chips and a larger patty that could be served pink in the middle. Some lettuce and tomato at this price point also wouldn't go awry. My girlfriend's trout - the skimpy frozen kinda fillet, which was served overcooked and under seasoned. The potatoes weren't crispy. Overall - I will certainly be coming back here for a glass of mulled wine in front of the fire this winter. But I'll be doing so after I've eaten somewhere else. Would could have been a great experience turned out to be pretty lacklustre. For good food in a similar style pub nearby, head to the East Sydney Hotel or the East Village.
Excellent Sunday roast / bistro style menu upstairs. Great atmosphere and service too! Highly recommend
