We've been locals for over 10 years now but don't visit very often and every time we do the food seems to slip further and further downhill. Last night, after booking a table for 2, we were seated at a huge table for 16!! We ordered the garlic bread which came out soft and barely cooked, like it had been microwaved? I mentioned this to the guy who collected our plates and he said we needed to let the kitchen we wanted it crispy. Really?? We hardly touched it. Pork Schnitz was a bit tough to cut. Salad is literally a bunch of leaves. Crepes were disgusting, again probably microwaved.. and pre bought? I've been to a few private Veterans lunches and the food is always delicious! I'm not sure if they use private/outside chefs?? Hubby meets his mates every Sat for a few drinks and a bet, they used to order lunch, but now they go elsewhere for lunch first cos the food is so disappointing. We asked for a doggy bag for one of our meals that we couldn't finish, the guy clearing our table said he'd be back with it, but never returned, we told the other waitress who said he probably forgot and threw the meal out ?

Food has gone considerably downhill for the last 6-8 months. Fishermans basket gets smaller every week, sometimes we have to return it with ingredients on the menu missing. Chips are usually cold and overcooked.

went for an evening meal last night [8/1/25] prices gone up but it was the best meals we have had there for a long time started going off in the latter part of last year but if they keep the same quality up for the rest of this year as they will have plenty of custom at still reasonable prices

Great food and atmosphere. Staff are helpful and friendly. Book dinner reservations as very popular and can be busy. Function room packages are affordable and menu options are accommodating for dietary requirements. Would book again!

I was having a bad day so decided to treat myself with lunch. Chris was concerned about the dishes, finally service me in the restaurant. He suggested me to sit at table 7 I had to run around to find someone to clean it, I put the mess one. Nye & Sharon were very professional at the bar. Even Julieanne help me use the member card.Thank you guys but disappointed in Chris 🤨

dinner was fantastic

Went for a Chrissy party lunch today. Waitress was swamped but lovely. Meals were atrocious. I had the open lamb souvlaki…the thin lamb pieces were so overcooked, black and so hard, you could hear the noise when I tapped them against the plate. Others complained their flathead was all batter. The calamari was soggy and the dressing on the salad was a bitter, creamy like substance. I told the chef upon paying about the lamb, not interested. Another lady was served a ‘senior’ porterhouse, upon paying the stressed ‘chef’ said no it was a main, even though the waitress clearly said it was a seniors one and even told him so upon asking her, she was still charged for a main meal. Disgusting. Give it a miss. First and last time!

2/11/24 sat we had a senior steak it was delicious and tender

Honestly haven't had a bad meal here, can get a bit busy & wait times can get a bit long. But food has always been great so far.

The meals here are delicious and amazing value. Chris is very friendly and does a great job. It’s also a nice, cosy place for a family meal. My toddler loves the kid’s menu.

We came here with a senior group with a booking. We waited in line to get seated, with no attention whatsoever. We decided it would be smart to choose from the senior’s menu while we waited. Only to get to the front of the line & be told to we would be given an order sheet to write down all the orders as staff (Chris)said he was too busy to take individual orders for a big group. We were then moved to the cold back room, with no cutlery to fill in the form. (If we had a booking why was nothing ready for us?) We placed the order to be told by Chris there were a lot of orders ahead of us, but we could pay our 2 meals now. Then we approach to pay to save the time later, Chris refused to take payments saying he now had a lot to do will take payments after .we order meals at 1230 and got our meals by 2 pm Wow then serving the meals he kept repeating we had too many walk ins this and that but we have done the booking 3 months prior

Our View Club held our 25th birthday at Altona RSL last month. 54 members attended. The meal was lovely and the staff were so friendly and obliging. Well done to all.

Yummy food

29/08/2024 . So disappointed with tonight’s meal. Couldn’t see the fish for the crumb, the garlic cheese bread was burnt and no flavour at all, go figure. The other meal of chicken schnitzel had no flavour and chips were hard and tasteless in both meals. We have always enjoyed the food but unfortunately not tonight. . Thank goodness we didn’t bring friends along. Otherwise service and staff impeccable. Please rectify this as not a good look for visitors. Just another gripe 🙄 when the first post is going on at 6pm why are the kitchen staff still yelling orders amongst each other. So dis- respectful. Should be silenced full Stop.

I would like to give a positive review because overall as the Rsl is a clean well run club ,patrons & staff lovely.The kitchen though is unreliable & inconsistent.Tonight I ordered & paid for a meal Rogan Josh at 7.49 pm ( credit card charged),at 8.30 no meal.Enquired to find the kitchen is being cleaned post service.No record of my order.No apology I'll make it now.So I wait another 7 or 8 minutes nothing happens.Back to the kitchen again to see the meal being completed.I take it back to the table to find 6 thumb nail size pieces of lamb for $26.To be clear there is a small amount of salad plus 20 grams of rice.Not even a entree serving.The chef says can I fix it,My answer is no because the indifference is an insult.Gunners have had every chance to improve over a long time,the committee needs to bite the bullet & engage new catering.

Well the past few times I had come here it was very amazing but this time I had come expecting more good vibes and good food but we walked in we had a reservation and we had no idea where to sit we wernt asked where we were and when we finally got our seats I orded the buzzer went of and the two pieces of flathead I had got were tiny and I beleive I only got a total of ten chips aswell but overall it tasted very good but what we paid for wasn’t enough

I really want to give one star but as a overall two. Meals are bad, which were once great. It sad but since new kitchen staff/chef it's just getting worse week after week. Things need to change to bring it back to a good standard not what it has now become of extremely poor food.

This place is such a pleasure to come to. Very comfortable, friendly people, quality food and great refreshments - all at a very budget-friendly price. Gunners Restaurant is especially nice. The variety of the meals and especially the staff are as good as any high-end place. Christopher is an excellent chef and manager. Beyond that, their services to those with needs are unbelievable. I never knew so much assistance and activities were offered until I read the TV screen advertising.

Jodi, Treated a family horribly after they just had a wake for their grandmother/mother/aunty.Jodi was unbelievably rude. The family had booked prior to the day and she was not having it. She even argued with her own staff who asked her politely to calm down. We will NEVER visit this venue again. And to think you made so much money from our family to be treated like this while grieving. I will mention the management has reached out to the family.

Jodie you should not work in Customer Service or work any front desk anywhere - honey your inner child is screaming for healing sheeesh if there was anyone who needed to prioritise self-love/care it’s you Jodie. The way you treated my family projecting your vileness is actually a reflection of how you feel about yourself. Thank you to the chef who tried to resolve our booking but I will Never return to this place. Extremely disappointed Jodie consider a career change and go find your joy.

Had a meal there

Went for dinner tonight, service was exceptional, bar staff great, food really good and tasty. Special mention to the head chef who went above and beyond, checking we were ok with our meals and bring extra chicken for the ceasar salad which was already substantial. We are regulars and always have a great feed. Thank you Altona RSL

We went to the RSL last night and it was great. We were a group of 13 and our meals were served 30 minutes after ordering. The wait time was greatly improved compared to other recent visits. The food was excellent. It is good that the Bistro management has listened to feedback on wait time and working on making it better.

Just joined. It's nice to have a local spot to have a drink with friends. It was quiet when we visited, but it's early on a Monday evening

Anzac Day March was very good

Very affordable costs. Food for a group of 70 was very average, chicken VERY dry, steak in pastry was very overcooked, but easy to chew. Entrees and dessert were good.

I can understand times being busy at the RSL but to wait 1 hour and 45 min for a seafood platter is beyond ridiculous . Our friend also ordered the salmon for the first dish not to be sent after 1 hour and 30 min because the chef said it was dry . 20 min later her dish was ready again but still was very dry . I honestly think they gave her the first dry dish . We were not the only ones with a problem . I talked to others in the line that had also been waiting as long . Please, please, please Altona RSL PUT MORE STAFF on or replace your chefs . I could have made our dish in 10 min . It’s only fried fish and chips . We won’t be back on a hurry

I don't understand why the menu is written up and you don't have what is advertised. Pumpkin soup ended up being tomato. Pudding with custard and ice cream was pudding with cream out of a can.! Your standards are dropping!.

It was disappointing. Our food was disgusting. Chips burnt,steak delivered cold and we waited for 1 hour for our food. No good. Never go there again. 😢

I’m literally waiting as I write this it’s been over an hour. This is atrocious and unbelievable. I just got my hopes up when a server came around with plates only to give it to an old married couple. This feels like a personal attack on me and my family!!!

We love coming here for dinner. Staff are friendly, very affordable and food is tasty! Wish they didn't put so much onion in the salad, is all I could say! Highly recommend!

Food has gone down hill unfortunately. Struggled to find the fish between the batter. No real soft drink only coke.

I had to wait over an hour for my meal. The entertainment on the day forgot the words to the songs. The Guitarist failed to turn his amplifier on.

One star for the rude, arrogant chef that abused me for asking for a new meal. Chips were soggy, steak was basically just fat and the salad was pathetic. Asked for a refund and money was thrown back in my face. Will never return.

Altona RSL was an amazing experience. The band was incredible on Australia day-as was welcoming nature of the staff and the punters there.

Went there with friends to have dinner. We had steak set. It was delicious... I enjoy the vibe there, it was so relaxing and warm. The service is good, and the toilet is also clean.

We love Altona RSL, it's our home away from home. Friendly staff, great food, peaceful so you can have a conversation. Consistent with their delicious meals. Never had a bad meal there. We go at least once a week . Good prices.

We liked the three course Seniors lunch. It has quite a nice selection on the menu 😋. We had a Fisherman's Basket, Liver & Bacon, Chicken Parma with a lovely fresh salad. Their soup is always delicious 😋.
