About Rainbow Bay Surf Life Saving Club

Rainbow Bay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) was established in 1962, driven by the growing population and families who found Rainbow Bay to be a safe and enjoyable place for swimming and surfing. Located on the southernmost point of Queensland’s coastline, Rainbow Bay SLSC is uniquely positioned on one of the Gold Coast’s only north-facing beaches, offering sheltered conditions ideal for swimming and other beach activities.

Club Facilities and Services

The clubhouse provides members with a range of amenities, including a training area, showers, change rooms, and a large equipment storage area. The upstairs area of the clubhouse is managed by the Supporters’ Club, which offers a deck where members and visitors can relax, enjoy a drink, and take in the stunning views of the ocean and the sunset over the hinterland.

Rainbow Bay SLSC is committed to providing a great community service for all age groups. The club welcomes the public to enjoy its facilities and participate in its programs.

Beach and Surf Conditions

Rainbow Bay and the adjoining Snapper Rocks Beach are the southernmost beaches in Queensland. Rainbow Bay is a relatively small, 300-meter-long, north-facing beach bordered by Greenmount Hill to the west. It ends at a low, rocky point, beyond which Snapper Rocks Beach continues for another 100 meters to Snapper Rocks, part of the larger Point Danger that forms the border with New South Wales.

Both beaches receive waves that are moderated after moving around Point Danger, averaging about 1 meter in height. The width of the beaches and offshore bar conditions depend on prevailing waves and the movement of sand waves around Point Danger. When the bars are present, the beaches are connected by sand, creating a wide surf zone with excellent surfing conditions. When the bars are absent, the beaches are narrower and separated by the rocky point, with attached bars cut by rips.

Swimming and Surfing

Rainbow Bay is a popular swimming beach due to its protected location and typically low waves. However, swimmers should be cautious of changing bar conditions and the presence of rips, especially near the rocks and Greenmount Hill. The safest swimming area is the patrolled section of Rainbow Bay Beach. Swimming is not recommended at Snapper Rocks Beach due to the rock hazards.

When conditions are right, the two beaches can combine to produce a classic, long, easy right-hander wave, which can sometimes extend to Coolangatta Beach. Surfers often enjoy reasonable waves during southerly winds, which blow offshore.

Fishing

The area is popular for fishing, particularly at Snapper Rocks. Beach fishing into rip holes and outer troughs is common, as is rock fishing off Greenmount and Snapper Rocks.

Membership and Community Involvement

Rainbow Bay SLSC offers various membership types to suit different needs, including Surf Lifesaving Club Membership and Supporters Club Membership. The club provides a range of programs and activities, including Surf Sports, Nippers, and Youth Development, making it a vibrant community hub for all age groups.

Patrols and Lifeguards

Volunteers patrol Rainbow Bay Beach every weekend from September to May, ensuring the safety of beachgoers. Outside these times, the beach is patrolled by Gold Coast City Council Lifeguards.

Great spot, with amazing views. Only had one drink, no food.

Great views and atmosphere

Such a great place and vibe

14-02-2025 I'm nervous going for dinner after reading all the reviews. Hope their high standards are as close as to Kurrawa Surf Club (our fav) or with amazing meals and friendly service at Cudgen Surf Club. We'll see.

The location is amazing but we were let down in service from a very young team. Food was tasty and served in a timely manner however the staff were more interested in hugging their mates and chatting instead of engaging with their customers. We had to ask one of the young team members to clear our table after our plates sat there for half an hour. There didn't seem to be much attention given to servicing the tables.

Very expensive food was not very nice nice view

Great view, fair prices and nice food - awesome spot for a beer and a parmi.

I read through the 1 star comments and no one mentioned how terrible the service is, unless that what is the going norm here, i don't know what's happening with the staff there but they never smile and scrunch thier face when serving, I have been working in hospitality for over 25 years all around the world and never seen such a miserable bunch off staff in such a beautiful location and the food is good, please have a meeting and ask them what thier issues are to improve, not a good look at all !

Great place for a drink

Beer was cold, view was nice. My husband had the steak burger which he enjoyed and I had the Thai beef salad which was super disappointing, definitely not worth the money. Looked like the salad was from yesterday. Why send it out.

Don’t get a salad.

Hi Team Rainbow Bay Surf Club Bar! We enjoyed the drinks and the food. Sadly, we were in a time crunch, got the first few ordered plates but the second order for our table did not arrive on time for us to eat with our friends. The view is amazing! The restaurant has an incredible Aussie vibe!

Staff as friendly and communicative as a dead fish. Felt like a bit of a hassle to get us our order. Drinks options limited. The best thing is the view from the deck.

A vista è boa, mas pedimos dois pratos e demorou um pouco

The amazing view goes without saying, food was terrible!! Small servings, overpriced and had to ask twice for one meal which finally came when we were ready to leave and the smallest piece of dry fish I’ve ever seen. Cocktails tasted like mocktails. Will be sticking to my regular surf club!

Such a great night! I have to give a shout out to the security guard, Jeremy, he was so nice & welcoming and friendly! Best customer service I've received all Christmas! Will be coming back for sure!

Spectacular views. Good old fashioned club.

Doesn’t get better than this place. Great staff, food and views

staff are very rude and service is very slow waited over 30 min for my food

Pésima atención! Estuvimos esperando para pedir para comer más de una hora y nadie nos atendió... los meseros dan vueltas por todas partes pero ninguno te pregunta nada. Primera y última vez

We enjoyed my Dad's 70th Birthday lunch at Rainbow Bay SLSC on Sunday. What a beautiful time we had! From the beginning Gav helped us plan & organise. On the day the staff were outstanding! The views - perfect! The food - amazing as always! But how personally we felt looked after - just made the event so special! A huge thank you to Gav and all the staff that made my dad's day & everyone who attended enjoy the best afternoon!

Always great excellent views same with meals friendly staff love being there favourite place to visit my son loves the atmosphere when he visits me from Gerringong NSW 20 out of ten are my ratings 😀

Best place to eat and drink in Coolie fantastic views and friendly staff

Great spot with fabulous views - food OK & service good BUT as usual have NEVER found a parking space - horrendous access. Also as mentioned by someone else, access is via a staircase so unless you use the stairlift (only if you’re allowed to!) it’s a hike for parents with strollers & people with wheelchairs 🙁

Beautiful day , great atmosphere and well priced food.

Great for a beer and the view. However the food is terrible. Last time i ate here 2 years ago the food was amazing. 27 bucks for a tiny schnitzel and smallest serving of chips. Time for new chefs or better management of food

Great place, with views of the and whale 🐋 watching

One of my favourite places but you wouldn't like it....

Great food, great view and great service

Mm mmmmm

Go for the view and a drink. Excellent. But not the food. Thai beef salad. Worst ever.

Dead set the filthiest club/tavern I have step foot in and I have seen some bad ones before but nothing like this.

Great spot for lunch - lovely views and a range of classic options on the menu at a reasonable price. Variety of tap beers on offer. Clean venue and quick service too! We enjoyed tacos, chicken burger and the nachos. Generous portions, all fresh and tasty. Chips were fantastic. Would definitely return for another dinner. Note there is a chair lift for those with accessibility requirements. However, if you have a pram you’ll need to carry it up a fair few stairs.

Great place to see whales and watch the surfing. I had pasta for lunch here yesterday and there was something wrong with it as I was violently ill afterwards.

This is hands down the best authentic surf club on the coast

Being ex local I always pop back in when I can. Wonderful friendly staff, great Mojito, and yummy food. Being 76 yo you sometimes become invisible but not at Rainbow Surf Club 🙏 thankyou

Great place to watch the sun go down.

Always good 👍 👌 😌

Nice beer and great location with perfect view. Shame the staff are indifferent and rude

Love this spot and always visit when I’m in the GC

Went here on a recomdation and so glad we did friendly staff ice cold beer the food was amazing the views are unreal one of the best places I've been highly recommend

Fave Surf Life Club in Australia! For real.

Great club, cold beer, beautiful location to watch the whales go by.

Good club, good wine, good prices very friendly servers, I now need to join!

Gave the RB SLSC bistro go tonight with the family. Staff were friendly and efficient. However 1 of our meals was still frozen cold in the middle (beef brisket). Took the meal back and staff delivered it to the kitchen. Unfortunately all of our party had finished their meals with a replacement meal still not forthcoming. Staff member approached and we asked for a refund. While processing the refund the meal was offered in a take away container. This offer was declined. I operate/own several venues within the hospitality industry. Simply refunding 1 meal was not what should have happened.

Muito bom ambiente e vista!

Amazing view, great food, even better atmosphere. Love it!

Superb location, view, atmosphere.

A hidden gem looking out watching the board riders.Great food, service n staff.Well worth checking out.

Great views, great food! What’s not to like?

What a great spot, The 10 of us for a family reunion. They were very busy, but the food arrived fast, the best steak I have had in years, outstanding food, the chef needs a pay rise. Friendly staff young blonde guy( surfer for sure) sorted our table out quickly. had to kick someone off, which went well, Gold Coast icon, a+++++, thanks heaps making our night to remember 👌

Always a great go to place for lunch on the verandah. Great food great value. The staff are friendly and service is good.

Very disappointed in our experience. Started off we had a booking but were shown to the wrong table. After settling in with drinks a patron said you’re sitting at our table. When the staff when approached they basically told us off & asked why we sat there. After checking their bookings they realised they were wrong but that just created more attitude from them - no apology. We discussed with the other customer & found a solution ourselves. Bar staff were indifferent. Then the food came. Overcooked parmigiana, flathead too dry to eat, salad different size & ingredients on every plate - none appetising. Way overpriced for the quality. View is lovely but food & staff very disappointing.

Awesome spot for a sunset beer to sit and watch the surfers

Nice place to hang out

Beautiful view from the balcony

Awesome venue! Great food, service and the location is great 🙌

Went there Mother's Day 12 May 2024. We had table for 6 inside but with a great view. Our 2 mothers got a free drink ,kids got a colouring book. We ordered chicken nuggets for 2 children that came promptly. The kids loved the big plate each. Our meals were great also. I had been here 3 years ago and can say the place might look a bit dated but inside a great space, long tables central bar We loved the place.

Beautiful position. Could do with an upgrade but very popular and functional. The lunch meal of pasta and fish was very nice and professionally prepared. Enjoyed the visit.

I just love this place!

Rainbow bay surfclub has the best view on the coast. The staff are fantastic. We always feel at home there.

Rudest staff I've ever met. Disinterested and more focussed on talking to other staff members than serving the customer's that pay their wages. They're consistent though, it's always the same, like a restaurant that serves horrible quality food but has the best location and gets away with it. Like the 'staff party' we witnessed on Saturday night, with a number of staff so drunk they couldn't do their pants up when returning from the loo, or where ever they had been as they all took turns heading behind the staff doors, and re-emerging glassy eyed or wiping their noses. Good on you guys, we almost called the cops but figured you're all going to implode soon enough. Lucky they had one good staff member managing the bar who commented to me 'yeah Saturday nights eh'. Hmmm. Saturday nights indeed. Food is good though, just don't expect any service, they've got the best location in the world and get away with poor staff culture by surviving off world class surfing locations and history. A little sad really.

I just went to have a beer with a friend around 3pm this Saturday and I was very poorly served by the girl at the bar, a thin blonde woman, she was super rude and mocking. I do not recommend

Over all this place was great, the veiw from the outside eating area was off the beach and it was beautiful. It was very disappointing they use fake cheese on there chicken burger. Not very nice at all but once removed the burger was great. Definitely would return there

Great view from verandah. Good food and beer

The Roast Pork was disgusting and Pumpkin not cooed properly roast potatoes shocking . Run by children

Great spot, lots of Australian surfing history here, but needs a bit of love, care, and conservation to stop it slowly falling apart. Staff and volunteer lifesavers are friendly and welcoming.

Really great vibe and atmosphere, still has its old school surf club appeal.

$15 Roast well worth it. I expected ceiling fans at least to circulate the air. It was a bit warm inside. Fantastic views of the sunset.

This local surf lifesaving club is positioned at the southern end of the Gold Coast. It's perfect for a bite to eat or a drink with a stunning view looking back over the beach and up the coast to Surfers Paradise in the distance. Food is okay but nothing special... just the usual Aussie pub/club fare. Beers are cold and the balcony is a wonderful spot to enjoy a sunny afternoon drink.

Rainbow Bay Surf Bar boasts a prime location with ample parking and abundant seating providing captivating views. It's the kind of establishment that embraces a laid-back atmosphere with minimal table service – a characteristic that adds to its charm rather than a critique. My experience included a delightful cup of coffee and refreshing mineral water, all set against a backdrop of a pleasant ambiance and breathtaking vistas.

Great location, great view, good prices, but........the best chicken schnitzel I have ever had! We took the family here while we were down at Tweed for a holiday. I am a tragic when it comes to a pub/club feed - chicken schnitzel, mushroom gravy and heaps of mashed potatoes. It's pretty much all I ever get and I've had plenty. Gotta say, the one I had here was the best I have ever had. Big schnitty, heaps of gravy (with big bits of mushroom) and a mountain of mash! Outstanding work guys!!!! We will be back!!!!
