About Us

Originally established in 1899 as Launceston’s Presentation Sister’s Convent, this historic building has been transformed into a stunning boutique hotel. The convent ceased operations in 2003, leaving only two elderly nuns to manage the three-story building. In the early 2000s, the Catholic Church auctioned off the property, which was then purchased by local couple Mr. and Mrs. Bowman. They meticulously renovated the interior while preserving its striking heritage architecture, including the central staircase and numerous historic features.

The Auldington Hotel officially opened on 26th December 2005, offering 18 modern, luxurious rooms, each with a private ensuite bathroom. In 2014, the hotel changed hands again, with new owner James Marshall taking the reins. James is passionate about ensuring guest comfort and continuing the tradition of providing a unique and satisfying accommodation experience in Launceston.

Great location, price and service. Their receptionist & room introducer staff James was absolutely amazing. Not only that his service was professional and kind, he also considered to suggest places and restaurants to visitors. Highly recommend this hotel, 10/10 to James. I also really liked how they kept the hotel in an ancient style, matching with Tassie style.

Highly Recommend! Quite Affordable. Everything was absolutely delightful, from the fellow on the front desk who is absolutely devoted to providing the best information and assistance whenever asked for his help, such a great guy, nothing was too much trouble for him and he was so clear with instructions. The room was large and tall ceilings, the chairs were perfectly comfortable the bathroom was so spacious and the bath was my favourite. The view was great and all the amenities provided were great. The history of this place is quite interesting. Everything was spotlessly clean. I would definitely stay here again. I'm actually quite forensic in the way I plan my holidays, I scope out all reviews, I check map for locations and I want very good value for money, so after investigating everything first this was my number one choice for staying in Launceston for so many reasons; there's an excellent Italian restaurant within walking distance, go for the seafood platter for one and the pasta oh and the Chai is awesome.

The setting is nice, but the house is a bit dated and is said to have been a monastery in the past. The staff is warm and friendly and will recommend restaurants and places to visit in the neighborhood if needed.

Good room.......only negative, no breakfast option as advertised

We arrived at 9.45 pm and faced clued doors. No one was at reception, the hotel was just closed. We have been exposed to spend night on the street. It was raining outside and pretty chilly. It took us 40 minutes to find another hotel, at the expensive rate and the taxi, which wasn’t just available in the night in this small town. The hotel declared us as no show. Avoid booking this hotel. I wish I had more time to report the hotel to the relevant control bodies for them to bear liability for these type of actions.

We recently stayed at the Audlington Hotel and had a great experience. We were travelling with 2 children and stayed in a very spacious suite - it was really perfect for a family there was a separate bedroom for the children meaning adults did not need to share the same bedtime. The building has an interesting history and the owner was friendly and knows the region so well passing on many helpful travel tips. A great choice to stay here, especially with children.

This place is an absolute dump, the rooms are nothing more than a room above a pub that you’d pay $70-80 a night for, they are not overly clean, holes in the walls that have just been bogged up not even painted, all the doors and wood work are completely paint chipped (according to the owner that happens because it’s summer so I assume they paint it in winter????) the carpet in our room has completely stretched and is a big lump in the middle of the floor and when I bought all of this to the attention of the owner and said I wasn’t happy with the accommodation and I wanted a refund so I could go somewhere better he basically refused and said it was good enough and that’s that! Boutique accommodation what a joke it’s as budget as you can get but costs $200 a night, stay anywhere else but here!

Very helpful staff. Easy walk to bars and restaurants. Nice view from balcony. Basic rooms that were clean.

Absolutely loved our stay here. The hotel is beautiful and the view is stunning. The room had everything we needed to feel relaxed and comfortable. Huge thank you to James for going above and beyond to make our time in Launceston as good as possible.

One night in Launceston and I was very happy with my choice of accommodation whilst my daughters stayed nearby. The room was very large with a separate lounge dining room. I really wanted to stay longer. The bed was very comfortable. Great Netflix as well.

Recently stayed 2 nights at the Auldington Boutique Hotel in Launceston. James was the perfect host ensuing checkin was smooth (even though he was short on staff); a free upgrade to a King deluxe with a suite was very much appreciated. The rooms were very clean & comfortable. James ensured we be familiar with the area for restaurants, explaining the city map of Launceston; attractions in town for the weekend and a Saturday market; giving us tips on towns to visit on the way back from our drive to Cradle Mountain. One of these towns was Sheffield, known for its murals worldwide. This was a treat. Thank you James for making our stay so welcoming and comfortable. You’ve gone above & beyond in ensuring your guests are well looked after. A very personal touch. I’ve no hesitation in recommending your hotel to family & friends.

10 out of 5. Gorgeous old world place. Owner James is super accommodating and professional. Location is great as well. Repeat clients.

Such a good experience having my time here. It is an old style building but it is very well maintained. Every corner of the room is clean and spotless. The room that I booked were equipped with microwave and mini fridge. They have common area where you can sit, hang out, or read books there with incredible view of the city. The building is located on the ground higher than the other so the view were stunning, especially in sunset time Auldington was near the CBD, supermarkets are in walking distance. Plus point: It is only 15-20 minutes drive to Launceston Airport, so I decided to book for one night. It turns out to be one of my memorable experience in Launceston. James was very good at explaining the details of my accommodation. It was a very good stay in Tasmania

I recently stayed at this hotel and had a fantastic experience! The location is perfect, right in the heart of the city, making it easy to explore all the attractions. The owner goes above and beyond to ensure guests have the best experience in town. His dedication and effort truly make a difference. Although the hotel is a bit old, it has a charming and comfortable atmosphere. The rooms are cozy and well-maintained, providing a relaxing stay. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for great hospitality and a prime location.

Delightful converted and restored convent. Rooms very clean and fitted out with everything you need, and then some. EV charger available. Convenient to city centre and attractions. Highly recommend.

My partner and o had spent afternoon at cradle mountain and due to icy conditions and having to change tyres we rang and spoke to James to advise of delay in time of arrival. James was very very rude to both of us and days that he had been working 12 days straight and advised he could not wait for us or even leave key out even after I had prepaid for accommodation m. He refused to give refund as we had now had nowhere to stay and thanks to James had to sleep in the car in freezing cold. Thanks James for ruining the last night of our idyllic getaway !

This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel. I find it perfect: it is really really comfortable and very quiet (blissful). The rooms are so well set up with microwave, some crockery, cutlery, tea and coffee making facilities,, bar fridge, desk, chairs, comfortable bed and lovely bathroom. James has been incredibly helpful on both occasions, especially when I had to extend bookings due to a family members hospital stay etc. I wouldnt stay anywhere else in Launceston.

Everything was so much better than expected. James was the consummate professional as well as helpful and knowledgeable. Beautiful high ceilings, great finishes, HUGE bath, stunning city views from our room and the exspansive shared balcony. We were shocked at the quality, location and service given the price was so low. Great accidental find.

Excellent place to stay. Trainee receptionist was being trained and coped very well. Room had everything needed and was warm comfortable and well appointed. Only room in our whole trip of Tasmania who included milk without having to be asked. Would definately recommend

Great place to stay. James, the concierge was extremely polite and helpful. Beautiful building with amazing views if Launceston. The room was spotless. Great value

This is a lovely historical building with renovated rooms/bathrooms. Great to have a balcony to use! The General Manager is very helpful regarding local information or customer needs. Central location with many amenities within walking distance.

Had three great nights at Audlington. James is a great host. The room was just what we wanted, good size, clean, quiet and comfortable. The Audlington is located close to the CBD which was perfect for us.

The hotel, which is an ex-convent, is very clean and comfortable, with super-comfy beds - and the best stocked bar fridge we've ever seen! The manager is passionate about the hotel, generously sharing tips and knowledgeable about the local area. In fact, he shared a couple of fascinating stories with us from when the hotel was the Presentation Sister's Convent.||The room we stayed in the first night held a king-size bed, with clean, white sheets and comfortable mattress. Fluffy white towels also provided in bathroom. ||On the second trip, we had a larger room with bath and QS bed. I would have preferred another KS bed, as room was larger, however, bed was again very comfortable and we both had a good sleep. ||Hotel is located on west side of Launceston, with Cuccina cafe a quick walk down the road. This same street (Frederick) leads up to Cataract Gorge and some of the amazing architectural gems of Launceston.||Would definitely stay again and recommended to other travellers.

It's a pleasant guest house with spacious rooms (well, ours was) - once a convent - and good facilities. We hit a warm spell in Launceston and were glad of the (silent) aircon. The manager is very welcoming and knowledgeable about the local sights and eateries. The building has the well worn characteristics of a grand Victorian house, so allowances need be made. Pity there's no breakfast; the nearby Cuccina cafe does a good one, but it will delay the start of your day.||

When in Launceston, take Hamlet’s advice to Ophelia and stay a night or more at Auldington. Once a three-storey convent but now very much a quality boutique hotel. The transition reflects thought, care and vision.|We had a most comfortable and enjoyable four night stay here. Our City Spa Suite was spacious with high ceilings and with two large opening windows overlooking an expansive balcony and lovely city views. It was immaculately clean and was as described. We enjoyed the comfortable bed, the hot shower with plenty of pressure, the generous ensuite bathroom, large fluffy towels, the included onsite parking and a sense of space and gentle ambience. The guest reading room was comfortable. It was wonderful to spend time on the large balconies sipping a G&T and taking in the beautiful view and enjoying the gentle breeze. We met like-minded people there on the balcony who said that they always came to Auldington when visiting Launceston. “A no-brainer”. We could understand this.|On arrival, we were sincerely welcomed by James at Reception, comprehensively briefed on local attractions and quality eating venues for all tastes. We were led up to our room and familiarised with operational things such as air conditioning, TV and housekeeping. James was keen to see that we were comfortable for our stay. Housekeeping staff were also lovely and respectful.|James was very hands-on, personable and available to provide any assistance required. Everything was about making the experience a positive one. The room compendium (and website) is also comprehensive, informative and easily accessed. Reflects understated effort and thoughtfulness.|We also enjoyed its proximity to the places we expected to visit. Cataract Gorge Basin is out the back and just up and over the hill. Great cafes, restaurants and supermarkets are within walking distance. Everything in town is only a short drive or a short Uber away.|We enjoyed a morning coffee at Cuccina (over the road) and dined well at Cataract on Paterson, Pickled Evenings, Buddha Thai, Monsoon & Levee Food Co. Cuccina also do a great breakfast.|We enjoyed our stay in Launceston. Good measures for accommodation are quality, personal service and location. Auldington has these in spades. Thanks James & Team.

Amazing accommodation very comfy bed, awesome bath and the best smelling clean towels ever! Host was informative, helpful and friendly. Was an absolute pleasure for a solo Valentine’s Day.

Great Hotel to stay in. I particularly loved that I could watch Netflix on the TV included with the booking. The bath in the room was big enough for a tall adult to be comfortable in. Location is perfect for Cataract Gorge if you are interested in that.

What a wonderful location, rooms good and spacious. Well done.

Amazing hotel with amazing location. Thanks for this memorable stay we loved it.

We stayed here for a week and are very pleased we chose the Auldington. We were welcomed by James who was as helpful and informative as anyone can be, he is a very attentive host. |The building is a character property which is full of charm. We were given a top floor room with a balcony which overlooked the town, it was a splendid view. The room was large and bright with a fridge, tea and coffee making and a small amount of crockery so that food could be enjoyed in the room. The bed was comfortable, we slept very well there.|The location is good in that it is away from the main road, slightly up a hill. The shopping district is about 20 minutes walk away, the waterfront is about 15 minutes. The grounds were well kept and there is a car park for guests. We were sad to leave at the end of our week.

Nice place, pedantic clerk

From the moment we arrived, it felt like we were being welcome to a home, not just a hotel. Everything was very clearly shown and was our first introduction to Tasmanian hospitality. The room was just perfect for our short stay, with incredible views and a very comfortable bed. We were introduced to some very good restaurants and local knowledge by the owner. Although we on stayed 1 night this time, we are coming back in a week for another night! Highly recommend staying if you want to have a great base to go back to after exploring Launceston

Wonderful place with a great history.

Beautiful rooms, great service, fantastic location. Highly recommend.

A home away from home. James is an excellent host , and the rooms are equipped with everything imaginable to make the stay extra comfortable. My room had a unique balcony , and the city wide panorama was perfect. In front of the accommodation are beautiful gardens to complement the building. I look to return for an even longer stay.

What a great hotel! Lovely rooms, perfect location, great information on arrival. I will definatly be back. Thank you

Lovely place and in a great location if you're planning on site seeing.

What a gorgeous historic building! Converted into a boutique hotel, beautifully nestled on the hill looking out over Launceston. Let's get the downsides out of the way, and please don't let them take away from the experience too much. This was just my experience. The bed was a bit firm, I sneezed and coughed (asthmatic) from the level of dust coming off the blinds whenever they were moved, and too much light came through all night. I did not actually get any sleep here 😞. However, the service was outstanding, and the room and bathroom themselves were very well appointed with quality finishes, appliances, and linens. The rooms offered stunning views of the city. The overall styling is wonderful, and getting to learn the history of the building while being escorted to our room was a real treat for me. There is easy parking on-site and perfectly located for an early trip up to Cataract Gorge as well as dropping into town.

We booked our stay in this hotel for our trip to launceston for 2 days. The owner/receptionist was so rude as he asked as to stay outside for half an hr instead of welcoming us in. Also, he walked to our room and asked us not to let our children walk inside the room as they got people sleeping at 2 pm in the ground floor. But it was just his office below our room. Also, he asked us to take the children to park as they were walking inside room. I havent seen such a rude person in any of our stays in Tasmania. The check in process was horrible and frustrating. We had to carry all our baggage up the stairs because the lift is not operational. We took our refund and left for good. Families pls stay away.

Very bad customer service……specially front office staff I have booked with my family…After sign in Front office staff told us you have to vacate now I can give you refund: Reason:you have kid….we have another guest They are sleeping. If they don’t want kids to come to their accommodation then I don’t know why he gave us room….I think he is a racist.

Beautiful boutique hotel with a history, a convent school converted into a hotel. Spacious comfortable room. Great service from James, the manager who gave information on nearby the cafes & restaurants. Convenient location for travelling to attractions in & around Launceston.

Sir James is a gentleman and a scholar. We loved our stay. We have sweeping views of Launceston and the location is perfect. You can walk to the gorge from the hotel. Bonus: Free Netflix! Thank you James for the upgrade and the super detailed tourist advice :)

Absolutely terrible service so not recommended! Went there after calling and booking, they were gonna just charge $180 for the room, when we rocked up my ID address was different to my normal address due to being homeless and they wanted me to pay a $200 security deposit as well as $180. When we said we couldn’t pay it they kicked us out….

Exceptional service I did not believe still exists. James waited for my late arrival with a smile patient and genuine care even had great advice on where to get some tucker. The room was clean with 4K and air conditioner in each room. Ice in the fridge, mini bar with great value. What can I say but see you soon I hope.

If you are working late dont use this place They were going to lock me out. No late entry possible

I had read a few negative reviews so I was looking forward to experiencing the place first hand. I have to say the hotel was very pleasant and management were professional and helpful. Can’t really find anything wrong with it. The shower was especially good.

Extremely helpful and knowledgeable about location. Central to many tourist attractions. We were able to watch Netfix and free WiFi. The bath was extremely large as I'm a tall guy. We will be back!

Great housekeeping and helpful staff. Very comfortable room and close to all amenities. Able to walk to the tourist attractions. Will be back.

Spacious suites, clean, comfy bed. Knowledgeable and hospitable team

A wonderful boutique hotel, (accommodation only but a really nice cafe just a short walk away for dine in or take out). It has an amazing history as a former convent with beautiful views, two outside balconies overlooking the city, not to mention the very efficient and informed owner, James, who will tell you the best and most interesting sights to be seen in Launceston. I would definitely stay here again 🙂

Really good location, beautiful view, nice staff and comfortable stay, what else? Highly recommended!

Simple but nice room, big and comfy beds, great old timey feel and amazing location.

Lovely accommodation in a perfect location. Staff were super helpful. Would definitely recommend, especially for the price.

Owner is kind and clean many good pictures

I came up for the weekend with my children there was used lubricant in the drawers that my one year old found the manager James came up to me and told me that I need to keep my children quite they weren't allowed to be loud and if they were I had to discipline them and if they were to loud I was banned from the hotel it was horrible staying here especially whenever my kids would talk or try watch a movie I had to keep telling them sssh so we didn't get kicked out and have no where to stay! It was horrible would never stay here again and would never recommend to anyone!! If you a family and want to stay here with your children don't my poor children didn't know what to do especially my 1 year old!!!

Ok. Pricey

Close enough to everything but far enough away for peace & quiet. The views are stunning.

Rooms really spacious and a very relaxed atmosphere with very friendly welcome from both Andrew and Carlton. Highly to be recommended!

Enjoy staying at the Auldington Hotel. Comfortable room and bed. Great deep bath for those who enjoy a bit of a relaxing soak. The large balcony overlooking East Launceston and the city is lovely adding to the charm of this Hotel.

Fantastic one night stay. Really beautiful city views from the top floor. Clean rooms with comfortable amenities and a pleasingly affordable mini-bar that was superbly stocked. James was a delight to interact with: the definition of old school hospitality with modern comfort! We will be looking to stay again in the future.

Nice spot, conceirge well spoken and polite. Mini bar service very reasonable. Nice little coffee shop across the road.

This visit we stayed in a lovely corner suite.. to wake up in the morning to see the town of Launceston spread out before us shining in the sunshine! Ahhhh the joys of travel. As usual a real pleasure to enjoy the ambiance of Audlington

Loved our stay! Such helpful staff. If only we could have stayed longer. Quite central, we were able to walk into town for dinner easily. Rooms were large and well kept.

Great place friendly staff have stayed here many times and always treated well,on arrival always get a friendly greating with a smile

The hotel is in a fabulous location, great access to everywhere. We stayed in Audington hotel for three nights. Hotel owner was very helpful to provide information about where to visit and to coordinate a wonderful room for our wedding anniversary. Even the laundry service was amazing, they folded the clothes post washing for us. The hotel was clean and staffs were friendly. Will recommend this lovely hotel to everyone

Great location and excellent value for money. Spa room was beautiful big comfortable king size bed and two person spa. Room was immaculately clean and had everything you could need. We will definitely be staying for all our future trips to Launceston. Thanks James !

It's great , high quality linen , beautiful artwork and decorations.friendly staff

Stayed there for 1 night. Location was very convenient. 5 minute drive from here to the beautiful Cataract Gorge. James was very helpful with dinner place suggestions. As he suggested went to a good Chinese place just 3 min walk from the hotel. Room was very nice.

Love this place. Great location, beautiful view, spacious rooms. James and team are friendly and very helpful. Thank you!

good location and neat room, nice receiption gentleman to recommend good near visiting locations and restaurants

Rooms were dirty and unkept, sheets had stains on them and had been used prior to our stay. The bath and bathroom had someone's hair over it and the main lift was not safe.

Staff were excellent and very welcoming, with lots of local knowledge. Rooms were spacious and comfortable and would highly recommend this beautiful hotel.

Wonderful stay at this beautiful Hotel. Warmly welcomed by the friendly staff and very happy with the room which included Netflix, minibar ,lovely bath and very comfy bed. Highly recommend and will definitely stay again.

Very disappointed, will not recommend anyone to stay there. The hotel manager was rude, please don’t waste your money staying there.

Terrible customer service, angry and rude hotel owner. I booked a room and restrictions hit 2 days after - hotel declined refund. All other hotels (even with nonrefundable bookings) always refunded due to Covid. Although I booked non-refundable room (did not realise), did not expect that hotel will be so uncooperative...Hotel owner was very rude on the phone. If you are trying to book something with even slightest chance of plan change, I would recommend to book with other hotels that take 'force majore' cases such as Covid into consideration.

Great place to stay. Owner was super helpful after my flights keep getting cancelled.

Recommend

Very comfortable with professional and helpful staff.

Beautiful place to stay. The reception staff (Mr J Marshall) was very welcoming and helpful, as were the other staff. I recommend this hotel for a relaxing stay, and, is a short walk to the CBD of Launceston. Great views over the city from our room and balcony.

It Good

We absolutely love the Auldington, would highly recommend staying here. James and the staff are all so friendly, decent, helpful and professional. What a gorgeous old building with a warm, comfortable and welcome feeling to it. The rooms are clean and spacious. Great location to top it off, such a handy location. I would rate the Auldington 10 out of 10. Thank you James and crew. 🤗🤗🤗. Yvonne and Mark King.
