Keeping live music alive
Can't go wrong with an institution of live music in Adelaide. THE SLUSHY DRINKS GO HARD.
We hosted a party in the balcony space at The Gov and had an incredible experience! Everything from the staff, the food, the help with questions and support with the decorations, was top notch! It's fantastic value for money and would highly recommend this venue to others for their event.
Amazing venue. Helpful staff. First visit. Will be back. Great parking.
A staple for the small music scene in Adelaide. Been around for decades and supports true local artistry.
One of the best live music venues in Adelaide
Club Cool. Excellent afternoon. Music is still a little loud for me
Food was average as. Overpriced. Your bar staff need a lot of training. Thinking it’s okay to serve people out of dirty glasses (complete with lipstick marks) and saying they are clean is disgusting, and trying to argue that the glasses are clean is even worse. Or maybe it was worse when she poured the wine from the dirty glass jnto a clean glass and thought that was okay? Or refusing to give me a glass of water and instead gave me a cup of ice. Worst service. Also your staff are miserable.
Lovely food
great spot! Nice concerts!
The Symths and Billy Blagg. Firstly, I must declare an interest- I was a student in the UK in the 1980s. So The Smiths were the alternative band of my formative years and Billy Bragg introduced me to Left Wing politics. I was preprogrammed to be a sucker for this evening. The Gov is a great venue with a constant flow of decent acts. I like a tribute band and have seen more than a few in my time. For me this was a perfect combination. Ticket purchased I was on a trip down memory lane. As ever The Gov had a good knowledgeable audience. Many, like myself, decked out in our black tour T-shirts. Sad but true. I've seen Billy Bragg live both in Oz and the UK. This would need a high standard and, Billy Blagg did not disappoint. He hit us hard and early with the sing-a-hits. Within minutes I was singing along, transported back to the 1980s. His set list was well chosen all the big hits plus a few more obtuse for the hard core fans. Did he sound like Billy - yes, his singing Barking accent was nearly perfect. His anecdotes between songs weren't quite those of the master but you can't expect a musical tribute to have the political insite of the master. Billy Blagg was one of the best tribute bands I have heard. I'd go again any day. So this left The Smyths with a mountain to climb, after the chants of A New England faded. And they didn't disappoint. This is a difficult band to replicate, and they pulled it off. Somehow the lead singer sounded like Morrissey. It was uncanny. Anybody willing to take on Johhny Marr's guitar genius is brave, but it was pulled off tonight. Drums and bass were excellent too. My only criticism would be that I thought the mixing just over powered Marr's playing a little. Again and excellent set mix, thoroughly enjoyed by a knowledgeable audience. I've nothing idea where The Gov found them, as I've been asking locals about their opinion and all have denied any memory of this alternative rock genius group. Would I go again- absolutely, these were two of the best tribute bands I've heard on a stage together. A treat like the kebab on the long walk home.
Such a great venue, easy to find, staff are friendly
No hassle, good time.
Pretty dated. I hate drinking out of plastic but understand the reasoning.
Sick iconic venue to see bands, great sound, spacious & good vantage... Top notch food & beverages!
Intimate, great to place to see a live band. These old legs can't handle hours of standing though 😭
Great venue, nice sound & vibe.
Shity place for live music ..no free parking..no disability parking and disabled booths are at back of room where you can't see anything..so why pay the money for a ticket when you can't see ..they only care about money not the patrons
We went to The Gov to see ThunderRoad, with our friend Scott Bradley as the lead singer, singing Bruce Springsteen hits. We started in the front bar for drinks, where there are seats in and outside if you are a smoker. There are lots of things on the walls, so take your time to have a look at them. We then went into the restaurant for dinner, highly recommend to book as it gets very busy( and don't be late as they give your table away after 10 mins). There isn't much room between tables, so people in wheelchairs, would have problems. The girls were friendly, service was quick and at a reasonable price. We then ventured out the back of the hotel where they have live music nearly every day of the week. There were enough seats, in and out for everyone, but everyone stood up when the band started. They had water misters, which was lovely as it was a very hot night. The toilets were clean most of the night, but were quite dirty by the end of the night. This is not the 1st time I have been here and it definitely will not be my last. The Gov does it well.
Brilliant venue and hosts many awesome music artists.
Great live venue. Has big and small bands. Good sound..... Biggest bonus they are NOT OWNED BY LIVE NATION Cooper's sparking on tap.... Vintage in the front bar
Great venue for live music, fantastic staff. Wish there were more toilets available when large shows are playing. Really hard to battle through the crowd mid-set to get to the toilet 😅 maybe they could keep the other amenities open during busy times
The venue is ok but if you like watching 80’s music, like me then it’s not great. Most of us are over 50 and unless you have a disability you can’t get a seat inside. I can’t stand for long as I get a pain in my back. I have 2 options, either sit outside and not even get a glance of the performers or stand in pain and have someone standing literally 5 cms in front of you, neither is ideal. Don’t know why they can’t offer seats, even just a few rows for a slightly higher price.
Had a forced overnight layover and searched for local music. Stumbled upon the Wheatus concert at the gov. Venue was easy to get to via Uber and tram. Had very reasonable drink prices with monthly beer specials. Venue is extremely intimate and perfect for this type of performance. Energy was fantastic and will definitely be keen on returning next time I'm in Adelaide.
Still one of the greatest places for live and local music.
Huge dance floor, great gigs, visiting regularly
Great venue
The Babys without John Waite is not The Babys.
Great pub, great band. Saw Jo Jo Zep.
Absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. All staff are friendly and obviously enjoy their work. 3 live shows attended within 1 week. Thanks for being such a wonderful live music venue.
Great vibe and very welcoming staff 😊
Still a great concert venue
Nice place with delicious food and lovely staff
Great atmosphere! Great food! Great venue! Great entertainment
Cool spot to see a gig. Handy little inside outside set-up.
Fantastic views and wonderful food to go with it. Save room for the Semi Fredo dessert. Yum, yum. Great service, excellent live music. Get in early to grab a seat on the verandah (BUT, not before 12, you will get in trouble!!)
Great night! Great venue!
The Gov always provides great shows in a relaxed environment. Hope they keep it up.
Food was great, atmosphere for dinner was amazing
Gov love
So disappointed tonight...paid to see the Sweet only to find out when there that Andy Scott wasn't playing, having seen the original line up, this was the only reason I booked, so paid $80 to see a cover band that didn't even bother to look or dress like the original
Great venue to watch gigs, floor not great for moshing. But I'm thankful for any place that allows bands to play!
A lovely place. Felt very much at home. The gig was fire!! 🔥
Straight pours is a sin but requiring bookings to order food is taking it abit to far, very disappointing…
Best live music venue in Adelaide
Saw Smoky. Awesome
Not bad
Good place to watch big and small gigs. Decent food and a PLENTY of space. This place has a mix of areas- ranging from the intimate small stage and living room type area to regular front bar to big dining area to concert venue for 700 people. Nice beer selection.
Love this pub! It’s like stepping back in time to 1983. Best bands in Adelaide and music icons from all over the world play here. A true piece of music history in Adelaide. Keep going strong @thegov we need you!
Enjoyed going to Kim Wilde. Wish I knew more songs and it was difficult to hear what she was saying
The motto isn't 'love the Gov' for no reason! I've attended many concerts at this venue and have always had a great time. I've seen many touring artists in the main room and smaller artists on the Gibson and balcony stages. This venue is great for a pub feed and have plenty of vegan options! The staff are lovely and welcoming. The Friday night Irish jam session is a crowd favourite that I love to stop and enjoy.
Good vibe. Hospitality is excellent.
Great venue always great bands will continue to go there Thank You
I always enjoy myself when I go to the Gov, it's a great venue for live music 🤘🎸
Amazing venue ❤️
Great little place for a beer and live music
Smokey concert
Great venue for a gig and a great time 😁
A rock n roll piece of history this place is. Had a great time.
I cannot speak highly enough about all the staff. They were super busy but nothing was to much and all staff very happy
IT SURE IS A LIVE MUSIC VENUE
Great venue! Excellent sound. Good friendly service. Smokers have a section (outside) where they can smoke and watch a show at the same time. Great experience
Just recently saw ASH there and the outdoor area is excellent. Venue sounds tight from almost any angle.
Best live music venue in town.
A quirky pub. Full of character and characters. Great live music. Easy access via tram.
Gagarin, family owned bar, live music venue, and restaurant. From tiny play what you brought gigs in the front bar, to bigger bands in the back room, this is easily one of the best live music venues in Adelaide. All genres of music, always great sound. Bar staff are also always really good. Highly recommended
