Food is always great here but expensive for pub food-each plate on our table was so disappointed in the water based gravy they got served with our meals-need to listen to how to make gravy" more water than gravy. Gave our feedback-an ongoing complaint apparently."

Nice food but not worth the price. $48 steak not cooked to order. Was well done when asked for rare. Don’t have take away containers. Service was average. Offered me a napkins to wrap a steak and veggies to take away. Pretty average all round

On Thursday 6th Feb, a group of 5 of us dined at Dr Syntax for dinner. One of us has a long history with the place, three of us had never been and one was an interstate visitor. All of us enjoyed our meals, the beer garden was really inviting and surrounded by gorgeous plants and colour, which made for a great atmosphere for conversation and connection. Sue, one of the waitresses, was a highlight for us all. She happily bantered with our group back and forth, shared in some laughter and took good care of us. Thanks Sue. All 5 different meals had no complaints. This place is worthy of a visit.

Very homophobic staff and patrons. Making fun of and derogatory comments about gay patrons that had come in, behind their backs. Very disgusting would never recommend. Turned me of my dinner which wasn't that nice anyway. Lucky to get a 1 star.

Hotel rooms are located right above a pub which can get pretty noisy at night. I personally wasn't really affected by the noise but those that are light sleepers might want to consider alternative accommodation. That being said, the hotel room was clean and decent size. Price was also very reasonable considering the location. Plenty of free parking at the back and lots of restaurants and supermarkets around the area to grab a bite.

Meals are nowhere near what they used to be unfortunately. New owners have reduced the menu and the size of the meal but kept the prices the same! Pork belly was more like an entree compared to what it used to be! Very happy to see you have kept most of the same staff though. Good luck to you all

Small room, clean en clear

Came for a quick dinner. My expectations were not high ( maybe too many meals at my Melbourne 'trivia' hotel.) Well, let's just say it was great - eye fillet, mash, veges & glass of Josef Chromy wine. Brilliant service, immaculately clean. And $50. Thankyou 🙏

It’s utterly ridiculous. This restaurant used to be one of my favorites. I was so excited to bring my parents here for a steak dinner, but the experience was a huge disappointment. Right from the start, the waiter mixed up the doneness of our steaks. When I tried to explain, she interrupted me and told me she didn’t understand what I was saying. To make matters worse, all three steaks were overcooked—burnt, in fact. Every single one was ruined. One was so bitter that it was inedible. I called the waiter over to ask why, and he told me that this is how they always cook them. After insisting, he took it away and replaced it, but the new steak was still bitter. The other two steaks were no better—burnt bits everywhere and barely any sauce. When I raised the issue at checkout, they seemed completely indifferent, insisting that the steaks were just “a little charred,” and said they’d report it to the kitchen. I’ve been a loyal customer here for years, but this experience has left me both furious and deeply disappointed. I feel completely let down by the quality of food and service. I will never come back again. This was unacceptable.

I felt /still feel greatly discomforted & upset by the derision &guffaws of supporting laughter &open hostility shown by an obese loud-mouth meat guzzler directed towards vegans & vegetarians at their last Quiz night, as well as his group of meat guzzlers being awarded 1000points for best joke by the host, which also was supported with loud &supporting applause & guffaws from the audience &host!! Made/makes my skin crawl!! Feeling distress & disrespect!!

Very well priced, clean, and generous portions! Ordered the 300gram steak and it was full of flavour, tender and with a nice char on the outside. Sweet Potato chips are also great.

Went to the Dr Syntax hotel for a lunch time meal. The fact that there were only another couple in the dining room should have alerted us. I and a friend ordered the goat curry, best described as probable a goat bone and sinew curry as there was hardly a skerrick of meat. Although the rice was very well cooked. Others were disapointed with their meals. This was once an excellent dining establishment but since new managers have taken over it is an absolute disgrace. Eating here is not recommended.

Went for a drink and a feed. Nice ladies who we were served by. Pulled pork and gravy roll was yum. Hobart beer was an added bonus.

Food was terrible! Dr Syntax has new owners, and this once great establishment has unfortunately gone downhill. The food was not good at all, the seafood chowder is basically flour and water with near no seafood, was not edible, received a very weak apology. Kids meals are much smaller, no salad and more expensive. This was once a fantastic, go to place to eat and have a few quiet drinks. We certainly won’t be returning. Very disappointing!

Great location for a catch-up with friends and the food is amazing

I have been going to Dr Syntax regularly for trivia/quizz night over the last few months. The staff are lovely and very personable. Great service always. The food has always been exceptional. Good size pub portions at great prices. However, the venue has sold recently and the quality and the size of the food has gone down considerably. For example, chicken wings used to be 6 full wings, for $10 now they are 6 part wings, for $12. Burgers were massive, they used to be a double patties, now they are 1/2 the size, for the same price. This is very dissapointing as it has been wonderful while it lasted. Please pick up the game, go back to the way it was.

Incredible food and staff. Amazing service. Great prices and atmosphere. Cannot fault the place at all although I would recommend booking for meals as it fills up fast which is no shock. Cannot comment on the accommodation as I have not stayed with them.

Came here last weekend with a group of friends. 5-6 steaks were over cooked. Other friends didn’t finish their meal because it didn’t taste nice. We have been coming to this place for years. But they have really dropped the ball and the food is shocking. It’s very sad that the best food they do is their onion rings. Plus also the bigger man in the bar had bad sweat all over his face. Which doesn’t really make sense because he moved and made drinks at snail pace. don’t waste your time or money. Becuase we won’t ever be back.

Went there for tea last night with a group of friends. Decided to have the pan fried Blue Eye Trevalla. What a mistake, my fish looked ok, that was until I cut into it. It was absolutely rare and the middle was cold. It had obviously been cooked before it had fully thawed out. My friend had the same and his was rare and inedible too. The front of house staff were most apologetic and sorted out replacement meals for us. They explained that it was a new chef. Whilst I understand that mistakes can happen, serving up raw fish is unacceptable. I won’t be rushing back for a meal anytime soon☹️

Absolutely LOVE Dr.Syntax!!!!! ☺️ My partner,2 young children and I started dining here around 3 years ago and in our children's winter soccer season, often stop in here for lunch after a game, it has and always is the best service, staff are absolutely beautiful people and the meals are always delicious!! They never have an issue with fitting us in for a late booking and are always smiling, happy and friendly. Thank you guys 100/100

Went for the Wednesday Quiz night. Definitely a great place to go with good atmosphere. Parking can be tricky but once you work out the layout it gets easier.

We discovered this hotel almost by accident looking for somewhere for dinner. Walk through the front bar to the dining room at back. Very busy around dinner time, lots of families. Usual menu, but good, portion sizes generous and not too expensive. Staff were fast and friendly as well.

Dinner with friends, Monday 18th March. The restaurant is always very busy and has a great menu. The service and staff were excellent. Two male friends choose the pork belly, one was a large serve and one was smaller (think the two cuts of meat should have been the same size, on the one table). My friend and I choose the 'Seafood Mornay' dish. The seafood mornay looked like seafood chowder, but with the large amount of cheese in it, so was more like a seafood fondue. Maybe someone in the kitchen mixed up the chowder and the mornay. The seafood was nice and the side salad was good. Needed a spoon to eat the 'chowder/mornay' sauce. |Next time we will have roast of the day.

Excellent pub/hotel…..food was well priced, fresh and one of the better pub meals we have experienced in some time. Make sure you book a table as this place is very popular and I can understand why. Staff are friendly and providing great service. We will definitely return next time we are in Hobart

Most of us ordered steaks, I ordered mine medium, My steak was thoroughly underdone. Some peoples gravy was burnt. When issues were brought up they did offer to fix it as they laughed and rolled their eyes. Multiple loyal patrons that will not be returning.

Had a delicious lunch there with friends. Table service for both food and drinks; great menu; great food. Air conditioned inside but on warm days an undercover outside eating area which is very pleasant. Can get very [popular so book ahead if possible. A large carpark ensures easy parking - access from both Sandy Bay Rd and a narrow access from Queen St.

Pleasantly surprised! We’re staying up the road and just wanted to grab a drink on our walk. Looks like an old dive bar from the road but we were so happy we popped in. Ending up staying for dinner and YUM! Customer service was great, lovely accommodating and informative staff. Food was delicious. Drinks were reasonably priced. Definitely a happy accidental find on our holiday!

Do yourself a favour and get on down to this place for a feed. The food is not only well priced but awesome, each dish looks great and tastes beautiful. The service is very good and friendly. My only regret is that we didn't visit more often on our recent visit to Tassie. Nice clean bar,beer garden, tab and keno. Close to wrest point. Thanks guys.

An unexpected surprise here, we had a great counter meal and we had actually gone to get a burger but the place was closed, as we were walking back up the street we smelt the food here and walked in...My love had the Beef cheeks and I had a rump and salad...Hands down the best steak I have had in a long time ..Beef cheeks fell apart and the rhubarb sauce was spectacular... definitely stop in for a feed...book ahead as we actually got the last table and people missed out who came in after us... excellent surprise

Very convenient location, just on the Main Street so very easy access to food, they have a bar just right downstairs food. Very clean room, loved the shower! There’s a mini fridge and ironing board available and there’s wifi!

The old girl isn’t much to look at but great menu, service and view. The locals are chatty and the atmosphere is very chill. We sat in the beer garden (which is dog friendly), overlooking kunanyi and had a delicious meal of beef cheeks and deconstructed lamb souvlaki, washed down with a bottle of acceptable red. Will definitely be back and will try the chowder next time. Chef; keep doing what you’re doing. You’re awesome.

Have only been for lunches recently, but I have not been disappointed yet! Amazingly consistent meals across the menu with some good specials. Very reasonably priced with a seniors and kids menu.

My 90 year old mum had the seafood chowder. I tasted it towards the end of her meal as she doesn't eat mussels but I do.I had a mouthful and it had an overwhelmingly burnt taste. She didn't detect this because her taste buds are not great . 8 hours later she was throwing up for 6 hours. Health department inspected the premises and said her symptoms are consistent with foodborne illness. Management were very good to deal with and agreed to discard the remaining soup they had prepped. Overall a total let down.

Had dinner there with friends before concert at Wrest Point. Great place, reasonable prices and good food. The prawns in my linguine were a tad overcooked, and the cream sauce was a cheese overload... I'll just choose better next time, because hubby's parmigiana and friends' trevalla and pork ribs (respectively) were delicious. Nice ambience and pleasant surprise not to be ripped off because it's Sandy Bay.

I first learnt about this location from one of my disability participants and have eaten there now a few times, and nothing wrong to say. My first meal was saddle lamb broccolini and new potatoes, which was very nice. My next one recently I tried the picture lamb souvlaki 😊

We had a family dinner while on holiday. The food was pub food, albeit maybe a couple fo dollars per meal more than we would have expected. The service staff were friendly and the food was pretty much the quality you expect from a pub meal. It wasn't high end, but it was good and there were no complaints.

My friend and I enjoyed an impromptu lunch at Dr Syntax and we were amazed by the attention we received on arrival. The restaurant was booked out and we were attended to by who we presumed was the manager who arranged a quiet table in the main bar. We were somewhat apprehensive but the bar was not busy and the table we had was bathed in sunshine so it was comfortable.||Our meals were quickly served after ordering and I was amazed at the presentation of the meals. My meal of slow cooked beef cheeks was almost a work of art, delightfully arranged on a rectangular plate. The taste and flavour were succulent. My friend had a curry which was relatively mild and very tasty.||I cannot speak too highly of the service and the meals, a five star restaurant could not have been better. Very impressive and highly recommended.
