About - Irish Launceston

Established 1835

At a time when flocks of wild ducks were frequent visitors to the Brickfields, and Melbourne town was in its infancy, emancipated convict Josiah Pitcher decided to share his passion for wine and ale with Launceston. Naming his establishment The Hibernia Hotel, after the Latin name for the island of Ireland and the vessel, Hibernia, on which he was transported to serve out a life sentence for felony, Mr. Pitcher introduced a legacy that continues to thrive over 170 years later.

Now a renowned Launceston institution, The Irish 1835, pays homage to our city’s historical and colonial past, particularly highlighting Tasmania’s Irish connection. We believe old Josiah has more than paid his dues—don’t you?

The Irish Team

We are proud to carry forward the legacy of Josiah Pitcher, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere steeped in history. Whether you’re here for a drink, a meal, or simply to soak in the ambiance, we invite you to be part of our story.

Bartender was excellent, told us oldies that it would be quite noisy later on, so good idea to order our meal early. Good gluten free options

Great meals with lovely staff. Our family always enjoys Parmi nights at the Irish.

Came on a Thursday night and enjoyed the Parmi $15 special. We ordered the Greek and Irish Parmi. Meals came out hot, full of flavour and were generous portions. Service was attentive and friendly.

Had the porterhouse steak with chips and salad. Yummy. We did ask the waitress if she can share what the salad dressing was but it is top secret apparently! Lol. Staff were friendly and efficient. We would definitely come back.

These guys fitted us in at the last minute on a busy night. There is drinks and food service to the table. And they ate sharp on who ordered what - no need for them to ask, “Now who was having the steak?” Food was great and really good value.

After reading all the negative reviews, we were a bit unsure as to how we would feel, but decided to go and make our own decision. There were 4 of us, we went for the trivia night and had dinner first. Everyone enjoyed their food, it was hot, tasty and the service was great. I think the outside of the pub gives the impression that the inside will not be nice, but once inside, we could not find any fault.

Service was excellent, food exceeded expectations. The dining facilities need upgrading perhaps.

We went for the live music on a Wednesday night and weren't disappointed! A bit of a blokes pub but it felt safe and fun. It didn’t long before we were belting out the tunes and banging the tables :D Good times!

Once of the best place in the town and they are very friendly

Great food - Traditional Irish Stew. Came quickly. Very tasty. The restaurant is in the back.

Good for dinner. Too crowded for night-life

Last stop in an epic bar crawl and it didn't disappoint - an great bar/club vibe serving some great drinks (especially the holy Guiness) I imagine that this place is a perfect night out for the boyz - beers, pool and good vibes. It honestly is a great time; live music to pair as well Unfortunately I cannot comment too much on food or anything else, all I know is I had a great time and am sure that if you're the right clientele you will too Cheers

Mediocre

Parmy was terrible. Rude staff. Very long wait for meal. This place needs a good clean. Perfect environment to pick up a very nasty bug. The place needs to be closed permanently. There are much better bars to enjoy in Launceston. Definitely give this grubby place a very wide berth!!!

Don't see the appeal but you know

$15 stake night super good value, chips, salad mushroom sauce..awsome

Amazing food and super friendly staff.

I ordered a hamburger from the menu. Didn't have a bite. And took it back to the bar told them it was cold. The guy behind the bar took it and I assumed I would get a replacement. I wasnt told by the guy behind the bar i wasnt getting a replacement and when I asked I was told that it was warm when bought out. I was told I was mistaken and that it had sat too long. I didn't get a refund or a replacement burger. I would not recommend the food at this place. Apparently as the customer I was wrong.

Great Friday night specials

Third time we have had issues with the meals. Missing items, wrong dietary requirements, long wait times. Every time we have been here others in the restaurant are having the same experience with incorrect orders. Food isn’t bad but really need to sort out staff and kitchen

We say after we eat what would you pay for your meal? $5.00 for my over cooked $38 porterhouse with cold chips and mushroom gravy that did not taste like mushrooms. My Wife had the pot pie and said it was excellent. My daughter had the palmey and said it was filling.

Boy oh boy. The loaded Cob Loaf was the best I ever had. And the Surf and Turf was excellent too. The veggies are well seasoned and if you have chips and salad, the salad has an amazing dressing. Yum. Definitely recommend this pub if you're from out of town.

Very disappointing service, this is now the second time we have ordered dinner and had one meal completely missed and told that the kitchen is closed and can’t prepare another. This was in addition to 2 meals being incorrect from what was ordered. Once I can forgive, but a second time making someone go without food is unacceptable.

DIDNT GET MY FOOD FOR 2 HOURS, AND STILL WAITING FOR IT!!!

Food took awhile to come out but was yummy

SOO BAD WOULDNT RECOMMEND 😡😡. SUPER DISAPPOINTED AND RIDICULOUS WAITED FOR AN HOUR FOR JUST A STEAK AND THEY FORGET MY MASHED POTATO THE WAITERESS SAID SHE WOULD GET A TAKEAWAY BOX FOR ME BUT THEN SHE KEPT CLEANING THE TABLES. SHE COULD HAVE GIVE ME THE BOX THEN CLEAN THE TABLE OVERALL VERY BAD SERVICE

Not have a food..just drink

Cleo was amazing and so was malachi, they had amazing service and were so friendly and helpful, definitely recommend the irish for anyone looking for fun, friendly and helpful service

Thanks for having vegan options 🥑👏

Always consistent with service and great food. Loving the $20 meals every Friday during winter, great idea. Dining area wonderful and cosy by the fire during winter. This is a gem in the middle of Launceston.

The lirsh pamper is different in a good way worth having.

Good food, fast service and cold beer 🍺 👌

We went on Wednesday Night and had the $15 Porterhouse Steak special. We also order the loaded cob loaf. Firstly the staff were friendly and accommodating. The Porterhouse Steak was perfectly cooked ( Medium Rare ). It was a tender tasty meal. The accompanying mushroom sauce tasted nice but lacked mushrooms ( only 3 tiny slices ). The chips were very nice as well as the side salad.

The Guinness pot pie is to die for. The meals never disappoint. Plus a nice fireplace to eat by. Doesn’t get much better.

Chips came on the side of the Parma, this is the greatest pub in the world.

Food here has been sensational the 3 times we have eaten here. We come to Launceston for footy and a hearty, hot meal in Winter is what you definitely get here. The parmas are delicious, the steak with prawns and cream sauce we had on a Fri special as amazing and the Guinness pot pie was superb on a cold night. The portions are fantastic. Staff are always friendly and welcoming.

Absolutely delicious Irish grub. The Guinness pot pie and Goulash were amazing.

I'm old and I have to say the worst thing I've eaten! I've not done this before but the fish was truly disgusting. I should have refused to pay but stupidly just did it.

Dark and dingy with a rude bar tender. We ordered drinks and the bar tender didn't listen before she made the drinks, just assumed and then was rude when we asked about fixing it. We told her not to bother fixing it in the end. The singer was good, would have been nice to have a light on him so people could see him.

Love it! Great food, good beers, warm fire!

Shared a meal with friends.

Our band Gen75 played our first show here last weekend and it was top-notch. Great staff, great crowd and amazing atmosphere. WILL BE BACK!

A great place to sit and enjoy your beer.

Beautiful meal steak cooked as requested and doggy bags available. Will definitely be going there again. MY Brother has been going here for about 5 years, steak 🥩 Night Parmi Night Pizza 🍕 night and has invited us and many friends on many occasions and we have found it excellent and without fault. It would appear however that many staff have now left and the new replacement is not as friendly as it has been in the past MY Brother has made a complaint to the management but appears not to have received any response and he has now chosen to no longer frequent what has been his home three nights of every week for the last few years. Very sad to see that just a change of staff and attitude can so effect what was once a delight to visit and be a part of.

Loved Heavy Hitters in the basement, so much better than radio music.

My wife and stopped in for lunch on S t Patrick's Day. We decided to have a counter meal in the bar. I had a steak, wife had burger W/lot.the burger came out it was huge not greasy and the lot means the lot. Mine came out at the same time cooke med rare, it was so tender it was amazing with the pepper gravy , the chips were crunchy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside, so damn good. We both had a drink wife was diet Pepsi mine was a pint of Kilkenny. Staff were friendly and always smiling, could not fault them. There was a li e singer there while we had lunch just a guitar and his voice. Liam your music was perfect for the atmosphere. Overall a great pub, great meals, great staff and great musician. We felt really relaxed after this encounter with the Irish. Will for sure to return again. Great Craic.

Not a bad pub for a pint but it does get very noisy at night

the food was mediocre at best, if I wanted frozen food cooked for me I would of stayed at home, however the cob loaf was to die for.

Got charged 10 for entry for some mediocre live music, drinks were basic fare but were well chilled and quite pricey. Not enough seating in the main area. We didn't have any of the food so can't set a proper score for it.

Beef and Guinness 🥧 👍

Decent food, reasonable price Nice live music every week

Belly pork 10/10. Waitresses/ barstaff 10/10. Bit underwhelming in the lower restaurant by ourselves on a Saturday evening (tonight) but the female staff were brilliant. Make sure you keep them. 99.999999%.

Cleo and Seth were the best bar staff Antoine could ever ask for!!

My favorite place in Launceston, with the karaoke Friday.

Was what we needed, a quick bite on our way back to our accomodation.

The place is grim. Needs a bloody good clean. Server felt it necessary to do something on her phone between serving waiting customers?!?

Grim .. with disinterested staff

Had to wait ages for our food, heating wasn't on? Folk sitting eating with jackets & scarves on,??? Why the hell would we want to do that really??, gone down hill i think, 8 ball room being renovated for such a long time, we won't rush back, other warmer places to eat at, competition is healthy, all the best, hope you make some changes for suvival👍 WELL NO REPLY FROM MANAGEMENT, OR MR MACKENZIE, THE OWNER?? Well went back 7pm sat night for a beer, walking past with friends, tried to play 8 ball, 2 Tables, one white ball🤣, table in small room, had builders dust over it, THEY RENT THE Tables, I was told by staff, windows were filthy, whole place was dusty, not many there?? Didn't even finish our beers, drove to the Mersh pub, drinks food, 8 ball, good luck at the Irish, HOPE MANAGEMENT READ THE REVIEWS, & MAKE CHANGES, lots of competition out there $$$

Amazing was so good and the service was really good to

They cram 500+ people into the smallest space. Impossible to get through the crowd, and takes 30 minutes plus to order a drink. Staff appear inconvenienced to take your order and its too loud to hear staff. Would not recommend.

They have limited beer options here maybe around 10 different type and 2 of them are isrish beers. They have a decent amount of liquor though.

When there on a Wednesday night. Had the lamb stew, and the wife had the beef cheeks. Both meals were cooked days before and both reheated, and both were cold/just warm. Beer was good.

Only drank, but the band was good

Hard working, attentive, friendly staff, meals great. No complaints at all

This place is amazing! It's really good for meals but each night they always have someone playing usually, and the music makes it a better atmosphere to be around. Let alone the staff

Great service and lovely staff food good

Came in for the $15 steak on Wednesday, and stupidly, I didn't book. The staff was willing to accommodate us. Beautifully perfectly cooked medium rare porterhouse with mushroom and pepper sauce respectively. A pint of Guinness is a must in an Irish bar!!!

Great Guinness wasn't busy but food good

Nice trivia night. Good environment, nice food and beverage.
