About Us - City Bowls Colac
The City Bowling Club History (1962 – 2012)
The City Bowling Club, originally known as the Colac RSL, was established in 1962. Initially, the club utilized the Birregurra green until it relocated to its current site in 1969. The new location featured one green and the first clubhouse, constructed at a cost of 40,000 pounds. The official opening of the new premises extensions, which included a bar, was celebrated on 21st July 1971 with more than 200 members, ladies, and guests in attendance. Foundation president Jack Dillon marked the occasion by downing the first beer. The club adopted the name “City Bowls Club” to facilitate the approval of its liquor licence. Under the RSL banner, the club developed a reputation for hospitality that continues to this day.
The ladies’ group, known as the “RSL Bowling Club Associates,” held their first committee meeting on 23rd November 1962, with Mrs. C. McTaggart as the foundation president. Since its inception, there have been 23 Lady Bowls presidents and 21 men’s presidents. In 2012, the club transitioned to a single bowls committee representing both men and ladies.
The City Bowls Committee of Management was established in 1994, coinciding with the introduction of gaming machines in 1995. Over 18 years, the committee has had three chairpersons: Tom Shelton (4 years), Peter Shaw (7 years), and John Neal (7 years). Joan Lawrence became the new chairperson in 2012.
Milestones:
- 1970: Construction of the second green, named the ‘Les Bolle green.’
- 1972: Building of the outdoor workshop and toilets.
- 1975: Completion and official opening of the dining room extensions.
- 1978: Opening of the kitchen extensions by then-president Lyn Diplock.
- 1987: Opening of the third green and extensions to the clubrooms, coinciding with the club’s 25th anniversary. Gordon Hosie (Hawkeye) was president at the time.
- 1993: Construction of the synthetic green.
- 1995: Building and opening of the Tabaret with 20 gaming machines, a move that ensured the club’s financial security.
- 1999/2000: Negotiation of a 50-year lease with the Colac Otway Shire, with automatic 5-year renewals and an option to buy the property within the first 5 years at a set price plus CPI.
- 2004/5: The club exercised the option to purchase the property, securing its long-term survival.
The club, rooted in its RSL origins, has always been known as the “working man’s club,” a family-friendly venue that welcomes everyone.
Redevelopment:
In 2002, the club held a special meeting to discuss redevelopment. The motion to proceed with the redevelopment was passed by the members. The redevelopment commenced in September 2016.
- Stage 1: Included two new bars, a reception area, a new Tab, new toilets, locker rooms, a members’ lounge, and a gaming room. This stage was completed on 23rd January 2017.
- Stage 2: Features a fully renovated kitchen, a new office area, a pre-function lounge, two outdoor smoking areas, a renovated function room, upgraded toilets, and a meeting room.

Easy parking, bar staff great, let down by very average food .
The first time around, really loved the food but this time was very dissapointing. I ordered a 250gram steak. Cooked well but definitely no where near 250g. Mushroom gravy was brown water with one whole piece of musroom in it. Unfortunately it was like the salad hadn't been washed, it was quite gritty and was just lettuce with one piece of tomato in it. I wouldn't recommend and unfortunately probably won't go back to eat again.
The meals and service is always very good and the staff are helpful
Nice food great service on the night and definitely will be returning
Lovely meal & friendly staff.
Friendly staff always a pleasure to play there.
Waiting for 2 hours for a meal is ridiculous. Lady with grey hair working at bar I believe possibly the manager would have to be one of the rudest people I’ve met.
Spacious area for catering functions, group meetings have bars, pokies bowls
Had a lovely lunch there with the ladies coffee club.
Would have to be the slowest kitchen for meals anywhere. Even when the dining area is almost empty you can wait an hour (or more) for your meal. Then they come out one at a time with a decent interval in between. Needs either a change of staff or a huge shake up. Not in a hurry to go back at this stage.
Bad, overpriced food and definitely not the kind of place to bring children to.
hi, so me and my friend and some family members went in for lunch, and me and a mate got chicken nuggets and chips.. and it made us feel sick and we’re still sick so I think it might be food poisoning sorry guys…!
Good
Always good visit
Great choice of meals, good pricing, Sunday roast 👍. Kids meals were great.
Large dining room which gets very breezy and chilly if you’re sitting in the wrong area. Food is good but seems limited to chicken and not much vegetarian options or red meat options
Wonderful staff and good food, we have been for meals on several occasions and have always been delighted.
Good food, quick service
Nice meal and service 👌
Great meals, service and atmosphere
Decent pub style food! Scalloped potatoes and veggies were delicious. Steak was cooked well and mushroom sauce was delicious! Fairly well priced
Great venue for a birthday party with lovely meals and great service
Food lovely and plenty of it. Nice atmosphere and freindly staff.
Sorry but would not recommend :(.
A lovely large, bright & airy dining room. 2 course option, Seniors (need to show your seniors card), kids & specials menus. Small discount for club members. Meals were large enough but not rediculously oversized and the four of us enjoyed our meal. You order and pay at the bar but meals are delivered to your table. Staff cleared plates away promptly when we were finished. We will definitely go back when we visit relatives in Colac again.
It was alright but I was a bit disappointed that the pavlova was just an meringue with a bit of cream and half a strawberry 🍓
My partner and I met friends to enjoy a lovely evening with dinner Our meals were delicious well done to staff who were very friendly and helpful A very enjoyable evening
A great show and lunch 👌
Recently enjoyed a community event here with a meal included. Food was very good served by friendly and helpful staff. All the facilities were cleaned to a very high standard plenty of parking.
There were two big groups present for md lunch and I was with one.The food was lovely and the service was fantastic. I think it would good to check first if they prefer a booking.
Great food, great prices. Would recommend highly.
Service was friendly but super slow also I ordered carbonara I got what can only be explained as cheesy soup with bacon peices in it was disgusting! I am sure other meals are better but unfortunately this was my first experience there and I have no desire to go back.
Had lunch at the bowling club today. There was about 20 of us. Staff were wonderful. Meals were all great. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Would definitely recommend.

Food was nice but after waiting over 2 hours for our meal anything would have been good. Also some members of our party were finished eating before others even had food
