Caulfield RSL
About Us
The Caulfield Returned & Services League (RSL) is located at 4 St Georges Road, Elsternwick, and serves as the home for both the Caulfield and New Zealand Sub-Branches of the Returned Soldiers & Sailors Imperial League of Australia. Established in a historic building originally constructed as the Elsternwick Club in 1896, the property was purchased by the RSL in 1920 and extensively remodeled, reopening in 1938 under the patronage of former World War I Prime Minister William (Billy) Hughes. The building retains much of its original 1938 facade and interior decor.
The Club was founded by men who had been wounded or repatriated from the Gallipoli campaign, many of whom were patients at the Caulfield Military Hospital on Kooyong Road. These veterans initially gathered to provide mutual support and advocate for fair treatment of returning soldiers and their families. Over time, the Club has grown to include a diverse membership, including former members of the New Zealand Defence forces, many of whom settled in Melbourne after the war.
Vision Statement
“To be the Club of choice, while honouring the spirit of ANZAC and the ethos of the RSL, for our local community.”

Friendly staff, very reasonable bar prices plus a great pork roast.
Have been coming here for a long time and the food just keeps getting worse and worse Ordered a Hawaiian Parma and the slop they served must have been sitting underneath the warmer for at least 3 hours. Offered a refund for my $29 Parma but that is not the point. Get it right or lose customers. At least the beer is cold and good.
First time going here. We both enjoyed our meals and the quiet atmosphere (no loud music). The building has character too which is nice. Toilets were clean and appreciate the touch free taps and soap.
Chicken parma was very dry
My son took me there for Mother’s Day. The service was poor. The carvery was terrible. Couldn’t chew the lamb, the broccoli and cauliflower were not cooked. The two meals was $66.60. All round shocking lunch, and a rip off.
No personality, bad meals and not who they say they are. Not a R.S.L. not recognised as a card is not acceptable. I mean a R.S.L card. Thanks for the memory and never again.
Beautiful old building, service ok
Function in Anzac Room - Perfect We needed a quiet and well priced function room for our Dad's memorial service. The Anzac Room at Caulfield RSL was absolutely perfect. There is ample parking, it has a lift for people less mobile, there is plenty of space and projector facilities. Shauna was amazing to deal with, we can't thank her and the other staff enough. The catering was amazing - superb quiches and enormous amounts of filling in the sandwiches. We were able to access the room the day before for set up, and were not hurried out on the day, it was very relaxed which you need at times such as this. Nothing was too much trouble and we were thrilled that we chose this venue. Highly recommend. Thank you Caulfield RSL.
On initial approach i asked the staff member on sky the booking but apparently it did not exist so on that front I was not happy. And after the phone call apparently it was there which was a surprise. ...... dissatisfied with that part. Anyways there was a massive heat wave of 43.5 degree heat. It was surprisingly cold inside. So with that I was extremely happy on that front. When the meals came through I loved it also. But I wish most of the startup dish didn't have spicy things on it. Otherwise a great to catch up here
My wife and I are from Canada and we visited this RSL on Nov.7th, the people and staff were very friendly and the building was gorgeous. We had dinner off the senior menu and enjoyed it very much. I inquired about Remembrance Day ceremonies on the 11th of November and returned to appreciate the wonderful ceremony they put on. Hope to come back before we head back North.
We’ll I don’t know how you call this a Parma Take a good look at it Terrible 😞
An amazing Sunday roast. A great selection of meats and veggies. Absolutely delicious. The staff were so lovely and welcoming. Thanks for a fabulous Sunday 🙏 Will see you soon
Great food and drinks at reasonable prices
My partner and I used to frequent this RSL very often. We were members. When we first joined we there often and enjoyed the great deals on drinks and the food was decent and there was pool table. Then everything changed and it was awful. Don't know what it's like now and don't care.
We had the terrible misfortune of 'dining' here last night after a long hiatus, hoping things had improved and oh dear, what a mistake. The complete lack of love and connection to food and what it means to serve people proper food was instantly recognisable, and I cannot even imagine the state of the kitchen, given what we were served last night. The freekeh salad I ordered which I paid extra to have calamari come with, was an abomination. The grains were glued together and rock hard, and the calamari was the most tasteless lacklustre just revolting stuff of nightmare imaginable. It had been away from the ocean a really, really long time. My partner's burger was equally horrendous and his daughter's open souvlaki was bathed in hot sauce (?) and encased in a very stale pita. When the waitstaff came to collect the unwanted remains of the day and asked why there was so much food left over, we advised the food was the stuff of nightmares and to advise the chef, and there was no recourse, which of course, was testament to the lack of love for the food in the first place. What a shame as the RSL is somewhere we as a family would like to support but the food is not safe and is utterly disgusting, and without love or integrity of any kind.
Solid food at good prices. It can be a little bit hit and miss but it's a lovely building and some of the best pub food in the area for the best prices.
Drinks are pricey, AND a gin & tonic charged seperately i.e. $1 extra for the tonic. Heading towards the $10 mark. Unjustified price gouging (not that price gouging is ever justified. Apalling !!
Lambs fry and bacon was lovely BUT gravy needed to be thicker....was too watery
I am a service member...had fun in Lebanon and first gulf war...I'm in a wheelchair....why don't we have wheelchair toilet....why???? Yep most the members claim boto have a great uncle whomever and get in ...then there is neighbourhood fans that wanna pokey...but great Christ on cross why in my wheelchair I can't pee??? My daddy was teenage vet WWII he was ambulance driver mash in 58 then just for fun before retirement came back as 100% service connected vet also in chair last five years....please why can't I pee in. My clubs toilet for last five years as no wheelchair access Check my membership Tina Fox
The Caulfield RSL has a great character to it, especially in the St. George’s dining room. The staff are super helpful and polite, plenty of on-street timed free parking is available (check the signs). It is quite well connected with public transport with the train station and tram stops close by.
Foods good, but the restaurant area is fairly small and dark.
Our group seemed to enjoy the relaxed vibe and food selection. A couple of diners hadn't been to this RSL before so were pleasantly surprised by the historical building.
always great to go there - friendly helpful staff - great dining
We are members of the recently closed Bentleigh club and thought we would try this RSL as our new drinking hole. But they were not interested in honouring our Bentleigh club membership. Which put us off big time. They are you missed out on our groups business.missing out on a whole lot of business. So went to RSL Bentleigh and was welcomed with open arms. Pity as Elsternwick would have suited us for our Friday night drinks. It was nearly empty when we went. Drinks quiet expensive and food very ordinary. Sorry Elsternwick
Birthday party. Service was good food was good. Had a fun time
Bistro meals were all great; 30+ played Scrabble tournament in the spacious Anzac Room!!
The meals were large and definitely reasonably priced Service was good, staff was pleasant I recommend the RSL
Nice fire place - staff relaxed, funny and helpful. Nice out door tables to eat at in better weather - Parma looks good, salad good, chips undercooked & chicken schnitzel, the crumb was too thick & chicken average thickness. The dinning room is nice. Good place for a quiet punt, read & coffee / glass of wine or dinner with family & friends.
Fabulous place for a night out with friends
Brilliant ANZAC Dawn Service yet again, well supported by a wide cross-section of the community, young and old 👏 Lest We Forget 🇦🇺🇳🇿
Good for boardgames on Monday nights
Food was not cooked
Great Rsl.
Joyless Kids enforcing culture of pokes first 😭
Had lunch for the first time and love the place. Very nice inside and the outside looks spectacular.
Everything at this RSL is awesome - the staff, the food, the atmosphere of this 100 year old building....just a great place to catch up with friends, have a few beers, watch the footy and place a few bets! Great times all round. The only thing they need....Melbourne Bitter on tap :-)
Always good!
Beautiful accommodating facility. Great for our AIR meetings, post Covid lockbdiwns !!
Good food and service
Very nice and helpful staff. Lunch was excellent.
The most pleasant people they were very attentive
Went for a memorial last Friday. Absolutely beautiful building. Lovely staff and ambiance. Will be back for a meal/drink.
Traditional, and old school.
Went in with good expectations but the parma and the chips were burnt…. Although the sticky date was one of the best I’ve ever eaten….
The food is like actually really bad , the fish and chips made me sick 😕😕
We called in on a Monday night hoping to have dinner there but the bistro is not open on Monday nights. However they had a choice of three hot snacks on offer so we opted to have those. Our chicken strips and chips and fish and chips were served a disposable container, the food was well cooked and plentiful. The staff are really friendly. The building is lovely, with many heritage features. There is a gas log fire which creates lovely ambiance.
Always a good night at the RSL but I soooo miss the bands! Bring them back!
Great old RSL 👍
An excellent remembrance to all soldiers who have served in all wars.
All ways a good catching up with old friends.
Best food in the town. Staff was very friendly and polite. ❤️
Great service and staff.
I used to really like this place. The food in the kitchen is still good but there is one staff member that refuses to serve certain people he actually brings down the place. I don't understand why he works at place like this if he doesn't like serving people. But seems to get away with it. I myself am OK that he doesn't serve myself because I find every interaction with him scary.
Beer staff and food good
Excellent Quality, Fair Prices, Warm, Cos y environment.
Excellent, Professional staff
Great service, fantastic chef!
I went to the bistro on Saturday night great new menu the food was great the staff are very friendly Will be back
An.amazing place, with an equally amazing history. Great service, good and beverages.
