The Story of Old Wharf
At Old Wharf, we stand in the historical location of former jetties, piers, homes, and taverns. Since the 1800s, this site has been a hub for colourful traders, merchandisers, exporters, and explorers who shipped Tasmania’s renowned produce across the globe.
Chef Alvin Sim and his team honour this rich history by curating a menu that celebrates and explores classic dishes – with a Tasmanian twist. Reimagined and refined, our menu nods to Hobart’s past while championing our celebrated produce and boutique Tasmanian growers.

We had dinner here during our recent tassie trip. We were very well looked after by the staff even though it was super busy. Food was excellent as well.
We had the ham&cheese toastie and gravlax with rye. Both very good. Sat outside which was pleasant.
Fresh and best seafood
Had a lovely meal here next to the water. Delicious fresh calamari and oysters. Followed by nice mains. Was a bit surprised by the lack of seafood options being so close to the sea. Also, the dessert (apple) was truly awful. Burnt, cold, stale, tasteless. We did mention this and they apologised, which was a shame - but other than that, it was really nice.
Amazing views and lovely staff. Shout out to Melissa who basically ran the place on a busy public holiday. She was so professional, had time to talk to all the tables and ensured everything ran smoothly for everyone even though it was crazy busy. Seriously- message to the owners - Melissa is someone you don’t want to lose and should ensure that. The food dropped a star as the steak was a bit awful. I’m fussy as (see other reviews) but I don’t want all inedible sinew in a $60 fillet. The rest of the food was perfect. And the sticky date is out of this world. Make the quenelles of the icecream larger!! Would recommend the place.
Wonderful experience, attentive, friendly staff and excellent food.
Expensive for the experience/food.
We were fitted in last minute which was so appreciated. My husband had the scallop pie which tasted as great as it looked. I had the Tasmanian Salmon which was a delicacy with the flavours added. Beautifully cooked and served. Highly recommend 😊
Food was 1st class
It was absolutely delicious, the staff where Delightful. The food was amazing. It was the best food I’ve had in Tasmania. 10 out of 10 experience, service, EVERYTHING! You must go here
The Supervisor jag was an excellent host he showed us straight to our table and ensured our night went smoothly. He gave us local insights to Hobart and fun activities we should do. We both had an eye fillet steak which was cooked to perfection! Highly recommend
Great location & beautiful view, quality food, nice staffs, highly recommend!
Amazing food and service in a beautiful location.
The oysters, wine, steak, and crispy baby potatoes were so delicious that I went there twice in one week. It was such a delightful evening.
After waiting outside for a long time, the waiter told us that we needed to wait for the last costumers leave. But there were a lot of empty seats when we went in. The service was good, but the food was really terrible. The pasta was obviously premade and the portions were too small for all of food but very expensive
It was terrible. There were seats available, but we who had reservations but arrived early were kept waiting over an hour. The phone was unreachable and the service was average. It was not worth coming. The macaroni was even served hard and the taste was indescribable. We only ate for half an hour and left because it was too hard to swallow. But even with the small amount of food, we felt stomach pain on the way back to the hotel (about 15 minutes after leaving the restaurant) and had diarrhea when we got back to the hotel. It was terrible.
I recently visited Old Wharf Restaurant, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. We ordered two steaks: a porterhouse and a fillet, along with a bottle of Barossa Boy Double Trouble Shiraz Cabernet. The wine was excellent, offering a bold and smooth pairing for our meal. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and flavorful. However, there was an issue with the porterhouse. We ordered it medium-rare, but about 75g of the steak was undercooked, bordering on raw. This was a bit disappointing, as the rest of the steak was done well, but it did impact the overall experience. Despite the minor issue with the steak, the atmosphere was cozy, and the service was attentive. I would definitely consider returning, though I'd be sure to check the doneness of the steaks more carefully next time.
Basic, no all day menu.
So good guality food amazing service and staff and beautiful Landscape Logical price definitely recommend and hundred percent back again Sarraf
Breakfast at Old Wharf My partner and I LOVE breakfast but we don't get to eat it much in our everyday life, so we prioritize it when we go on holiday. Unfortunately the hotel we were staying at had a pretty mediocre breakfast, so we ended up at Old Wharf and let me say, we were beyond happy. We went 2 days in a row (and would have gone more had we discovered it sooner). Old Wharf has figured out how to give guests the best aspects of a buffet breakfast (quantity and variety) without losing quality. If you get the Full Breakfast, you can get one menu item hot from the kitchen, PLUS add 3 sides, PLUS you get to take advantage of the continental buffet. It's an amazing deal and ensures you get a hot, well-presented, delicious, filling breakfast while also having access to freshly baked pastries and breads, yogurt and muesli, fresh fruit, cheese, spreads, etc. Everything is high quality and clearly prepared by people who take breakfast seriously. ALSO, a barista coffee is included, and it's GOOD. Further, the staff were amazing. They were friendly and helpful both days. On Friday it was quiet when we were there, but it was really busy on Saturday and we arrived 15 minutes early for our booking, which was probably annoying, but everyone was super welcoming regardless. The kitchen is open and right next to the buffet so you can see how well-oiled the operation is. Honestly just really impressive across the board. If this is any indication of how the hotel is run, we'll definitely stay here next time we're in town.
Great location, fantastic food and service. Thanks we will be back
Great ambience, service, and variety of cuisines.
Whilst the food was lovely I was disappointed that the pasta for my main was not made in house. Distinctly out of a packet and I expected more from a fine dining restaurant. However the biggest disappointment was the service. Our waitress was completely out of her depth and really should not have been been taking orders and managing a section. Service was slow and she didn’t seem to understand the concept of entrees and mains as she asked if we wanted all that we ordered to come out at the same time. An order of fries was missed and we asked if it hadn’t been ordered then we did not want it. She didn’t listen to this as she ordered them. On the positive side she was very pleasant and amenable. Basically I expected a lot more from a fine dining restaurant so I sent them an email the day after the dinner and I am still waiting for a reply 4 weeks later.
The food was lovely! However, it’s really disappointing when your bartender openly mocks your drinks order, right in front of you (twice!) Overall, very average experience given the poor service by the bar staff.
Incredible food - world class
Lovely brewed chai
I don't even know where to start. The service was slow and below average. We sat for over 20 mins with our menu's closed waiting for someone to take our order. Then the food took forever and it was average. Actually, I won't sugar coat it, it was disappointing. And quite frankly the price is ridiculous for what you get, especially when you take into account the slow, uncaring service and sad atmosphere. Do not recommend.
棒
A fancy restaurant and we had a good time.
Overall a pleasant and quiet lunch on a rainy day. The cider battered fish and chips, and toastie were both great but the chips could have been a lot better - tasted like frozen chips do. The vibe was lacking but could have been just an off day.
Loving the decorations and atmosphere. Perfect for a romantic dinner with my partner. Though food portion is small and pricey. It is delicious though. We had cheese platter and grilled salmon. Juicy salmon. Nice combo of cheese and apple slices.
Nice food, excellent service.
Service was top notch, Melissa was helpful and a pleasure. Beautiful spot to have a drink. The mains were a little off. My partner had the Pasta main and it was bland and tasteless. The Salmon Gravlax we had as an entree was superb.
We stayed at Macq01 and dined twice for dinner at Old Wharf. 10/10. The seafood pie. The chicken. The pasta. The best crispy potatoes you’ll ever eat. The place was faultless. All beautifully presented. Lovely staff. Kitchen staff need serious praise.
We went there only to drink a coffee and some water! The atmosphere was good, the girl in the bar was a little bit tired, but friendly.
We had a last minute booking and the team accommodated us with such ease! The service was 10 out of 10 and the food was delicious! The complimentary bread was out of this world! Definitely a must-visit when in Hobart!
The best food in Hobart👏
We went there for dinner, and in general the food was good. Just have small issues with the pasta. There is complementary bread and butter. We had started with croquettes and burrata. The burrata was good with a nice slice of foccacia and good tomatoes. The croquettes were amazing, and I highly recommended them. For the main dish, I had the lamb that was perfect. My wife had the vodka sauce pasta that was overcooked 😞. The sides were pretty good, the roasted potatoes were perfect and the vegetables on butter sauce were great! They have a pretty good wine selection!
Superb service and food was amazing. Best to make a booking as it is a busy place.
The staff tonight were completely out of their depth. The steaks we ordered were the toughest I’ve ever experienced and had obviously been sitting for quite some time before being served. For the amount of diners in the restaurant the service was quite slow. The seafood pot pie was extremely watery. Overall the quality of the meals do not justify the price being charged at this restaurant. Extremely disappointing given the reviews this restaurant has.
You have to try, loved this place
This place offers excellent food and drinks, making it a great place to eat while enjoying a beautiful view. The food serving time was very quick, and the Marinara pasta is a standout dish.
We went for dinner and it was most enjoyable. We had the Oyster Kirkpatrick, salt, and pepper squid. The eye fillet and salmon and local greens. All were delicious. Would recommend the salt and pepper squid and the salmon
Absolutely beautiful views , the coffee was delightful
Just had a beautiful meal here on our first night in Hobart. Absolutely stunning setting, fantastic food and wine, but best of all was the excellent service from Melissa! She is one of the best wait persons we have ever come across!
Lovely setting, food excellent and service was perfect. Highly recommend.
This is way more expensive a place than I’d normally eat, but we had friends coming down from Melbourne, and we thought what the heck. We all loved it! I’m not a fan of aniseed flavours so balked at the octopus, but so glad I got it. Who cares about the fennel when it is blended with whatever else the chefs whipped around in there - absolutely awesome! I got the seafood pot pie for mains which I could best describe as a spectacular seafood chowder (not runny) with a superbly crumble outer. Everyone at our table loved their food. I shared a cheese platter with one of our mates as the others had desserts and we all raved about the selections there too. Only reason I have four instead of five stars was the price. Yes, I know it’s in MAC 1 and we paid a premium for that, but charging $70 for a bottle of wine that I regularly see at the bottle shop at the end of the street this restaurant is on for around the $20 mark is a bit much.
Simply awesome
Solid cocktails in their bar, especially paired with a cheeseboard.
Our dining experience at Old Wharf Restaurant was truly exceptional. The dinner offerings were exquisite, each dish impeccably prepared and bursting with delightful flavours. The dessert was a perfect conclusion to the meal, showcasing the chef's skill and artistry. The restaurant's picturesque waterfront view provided a serene and elegant ambiance, perfect for a memorable evening. Highly recommend!
First place in Hobart
Brilliant service by happy people. Great coffee. 🤗
Best breakfast in Hobart. I had the Big Breakfast. Every component of my Big Breakfast was perfect. One complaint: for that price, should my one latte have been included?
Went there for our anniversary Dinner. The food service and atmosphere were fantastic. From the rime we arrived until we left the food and service were exceptional. Well done to the team.
A wonderful night out , great view , food , cocktails ( drinks and wine list) and very good attentive service from Ollie and his crew .
Awesome atmosphere, i love the tomato salad😉the eye fillet cooked perfectly but too small for the plates. Overall , our experienced was fantastic👍
Popped in for dinner tonight and had a wonderful experience!!! The interior fit out, views back over the harbour and general feel of the place just makes the Old Wharf an incredible spot to dine. I had oysters and pasta with sparkling rose, all stunning! Would happily come back here again.
Dined last night as we were staying in the hotel. Everything seemed chaotic. Food was okay but nothing amazing. Service was all over the place. Counted at least 6 different staff that served us. The wiping down of tables mid dinner needs to stop. Why is this happening? What happened to wait staff being in sections? Clearly training needs some work. The restaurant is modern but there is zero atmosphere. Wasn’t even any music playing. Do better.
Staff are brilliant View was stunning Lost one star for the pot pie Wasnt enough white fish but the rest of the food was wonderful Very hard-working staff
Lovely spot for lunch
We came here with our young family and another family. The food was delicious and the service was very attentive. Best meal we had in Hobart for our short holiday.
We had a fantastic dining experience, and were delighted with the fresh and well-prepared food. I highly recommend trying the salmon gravlax and oysters. The service was prompt, and the staff were quick to answer all our questions about the menu. The setting was truly atmospheric, with large windows offering breathtaking views of the River Derwent. Overall, it's a fantastic dining option along the scenic Hobart waterfront.
Not bad to dine once.
Fantastic and a great price, super great staff
Excellent - will definitely visit there again.
I came over from Geelong to celebrate my birthday here and I'm certainly glad I did. The hotel and restaurant is absolutely beautiful from the minute you walk in and the service was 5 star. I ordered the salmon and it was perfectly cooked and delicious and the sticky date pudding for dessert was a great end to the meal. I highly recommend Old Wharf Restaurant for any occasion, you will not be disappointed!
Great place for a birthday celebration. Yummy food and drinks.
Well it’s 10.08pm. I am still drying off from the 500ml spilt over me by a waitress, but I was sure to point out that accidents like that happen (perhaps I should have added … just not in good restaurants) … so back to it … we completed our meal at about 9pm, and we’re not tended to again until about 9.40pm when I explained that we were ready to leave. Nothing further yet. Maybe I am just supposed to leave? Perhaps the maître d’ will read this and bring me the bill. Food was actually quite nice! Well done to the guys behind the scenes!!!
Service slow, ended up leaving without eating, not much to choose from ,very expensive.
Attentive service and tasty food...really enjoyed our meal.
Wir hatten als Vorspeise Squid, dann den Tasmanian salmon und das Portland Steak.. fantastisches Essen, sehr netter Service, wirklich außergewöhnlich. Der Blick auf den Hafen noch nicht mit eingerechnet 🤩
We had the two vegan pasta dishes which were both delicious but the mushroom pasta was outstanding! Special thanks to Phoebe who looked after us and is an absolute delight. Thank you to everyone for a beautiful dining experience.
Great customer service and food.
I was there as a final night of a tour. The restaurant was very busy but the staff know how to serve. Hats off to you guys. We had a small selection and everyone enjoyed their meals. They catered very well for me, being non lactose. The wine was also delicious.
It’s okay. I don’t think the food, service or atmosphere is exciting or elevated enough to match the price range. The view is beautiful though. We order 3 thing that were smothered in pesto. I love pesto, but surely there are other flavours than that. And the steak was well done not medium, don’t usually send anything back to the kitchen... but given the reputation and $ I don’t think silly mistakes like that should be made.
Great atmosphere and yummy food
It started with a very Friendly welcome We were wished a very happy anniversary. We seated at a fabulous table with a sensational view. We knew we were in for something special. The service was fabulous the food sensational. I highly recommend this restaurant
