Went for late lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and improvement of the hotel. Food was 10 out of 10, will be coming back

Great food, great service wonderful venue

We were there for a birthday party the room was nicely decorated but not very private. We were a group of 30 plus, we all ordered food roughly at the same time. Our table was served some 40 minutes after everyone else, we even had to chase up with the staff 3 meals for our table of 6. The quality of the food did not match the price. Two meals out of our 6 were inedible, one was grilled fish, very small portion of fish and large portion of chips. The other, last meal to be served was overcooked chicken and cold.

We were frequent diners at the Sugargum, hadnt been for a while but our recent experience wasn’t great. My husband’s rib eye steak was not a medium rare, it was more of a well done, which is disappointing for a good cut of meat. I had the veal Mediterranean stack, which left me with severe cramping in my stomach, I believe the mash potato is not proper mash but a powered mash and it was hard as a rock. The veal itself was ok, a few fatty chunks. A family member got locked in the toilet cubical, as the lock was broken, there was no apology from staff sadly, despite this, another couple of people also got locked in after this instance, not sure if the cubical was made out of order?! In both the women’s and then a young boy in the men’s bathroom also. Our children’s socks were drenched from the air con in the play area, the play area was freezing cold, and wet on the ground from the dripping condensation from the air conditioning. Our water glasses kept getting taken, several times we had to get new glasses which was very annoying. Must say overall it wasn’t a great experience, I don’t feel the level of care for the bistro is there anymore, just a high turn over patrons, definitely the quality is lacking.

I have been living in an area for nearly 30 years and the owners who actually own sugar before these people are almost 10 times better than the current owners now. However, the the staff now a racist, disgusting, horrible, the had a problem with my husband's because he has a rat tail, the people in the gaming room are disgusting especially the over weight blondie who thinks she owns the joint she disgrace because she didn't approve my partner because he didn't approve the way she spoke to me and once again she had open her mouth and try to improve a point which I actually have a couple of customers said what is her problem and how do you address people like that. As for the food, average westwaters does better and the staff are amazing 😍 hot tip don't go to sugar gum

Sorry this time we went 1 hour for food. I order chilli and garlic prawns the rice was a block not happy this time.

Definitely the place to go for a good hearty feed, even better is that they have a huge kids play area where they can run around and make as much noise as they want. I fully recommend this place.

Very impressive family dining hotel. Staff truly are amazing and very very accommodating to your needs. Lovely decor and loved the experience of our large family gathering due to how great everything was.

Terribly run kitchen and staff...went there for a family dinner but we ate in 3 different times as they were not capable of bringing the food out at the same time

Excellent hotel. Food was very tasty and plentiful. Nice quiet atmosphere when we were there. Our service was a bit slow with two of use being served and our other two freinds having to wait 10 minutes. A minor hiccup on a pleasant day.

Great Place For My 60th Birthday Celebrations!

Was absolutely disgusted with the service of this place. My relatives came from out of town only to have experienced such poor time management and communication skills by the staff. Was kept waiting for a simple meal for over an hour and when finally received, we didn’t even get an apology for the wait or inconvenience. Definitely don’t recommend and will not be eating here again.

This place is a disaster, my poor relatives were waiting 1 hour for their food while mine came out nearly straight away and we ordered at the same time. The staff were not respectful and didn’t apologise for the delay. I definitely do not recommend this place.

Staff need to learn to smile! Learn to pour a beer, flat no head!! Atmosphere none! Meal ordered the the flathead, extremely dry, chip over cooked. It was not busy so had plenty of time to get it right.

Ordered the superfood salad with chicken, which was pretty good, though definitely needs more/a different type of dressing. It was $5 to add the chicken, which was super reasonable, and it came with 5 tenderloins - 3 would have been more than enough and still a good price. Everyone else we were there with said their food was alright, nothing really was a standout but if you're keen on a quick meal this is the place to go. Service was okay at best, the lady who served us clearly didn't want to be there.

Great atmosphere and kids area

Our recent dinner at Sugar Gum was highly disappointing, and unfortunately, we won’t be returning. A friend in our group ordered a vegan burger. The waitress who served the meal announced it as a vegan burger, which six of us clearly heard. However, as my friend began eating, she quickly realized it was a steak burger. When we brought this to the attention of another waitress, she apologized. Shortly after, the waitress who initially served the meal came over, denied saying it was a vegan burger, and responded in an unprofessional and rude manner. We asked to speak with management, and while Tommy came over, it was clear he was ill-equipped to handle the situation effectively. To add to the disappointment, one person in our group waited an unacceptable 1 hour and 15 minutes for their meal. This entire experience was a complete letdown. If this had been a case involving an anaphylactic reaction, the consequences could have been far more serious. We expected better from a venue like Sugar Gum.

Food was below average, broccolini with the salmon was raw. The staff decided to do the vacuuming during lunch on a Sunday, and took a long time to clear plates. The staff were rude about requiring a deposit for a large group and seemed annoyed that I wanted it back after everyone had arrived. This last point will make us choose somewhere else next time.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at the Sugergum Hotel, and it was an outstanding experience! From the first bite to the last, the flavors were perfectly balanced, and the presentation was impeccable. Overall, the Sugergum Hotel restaurant exceeded my expectations in every way. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking for delicious food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. I’ll definitely be back soon!

Taken over half hour and still waiting for my food, that's dining in too slow

Nice upgrade of venue. We had porterhouse, perfectly cooked. The veg was sadly boiled broccoli and carrot, not tasty at all, sorry I didn't take a clear pic of meal. Would have preferred the ones in website pic. The baked potatoes were yummy. Desert: sticky date was yummy too. Service was great, atmosphere, rushed but good. $160 total 2nd visit; Roast of day Lamb shanks Nuggets chips icecream Beer pot, chard Coffee x1 $80.81 Great meals, great service. Really hot day, playground on higher level was like an oven.

Limited staff today chicken Parma came out burnt and salad was rocket only. As for the pavlova 😂. No fruit on it only a meringue with whipped cream on top. ! Where’s the fruit. 🤷‍♀️ very disappointed

Worst experience ever !!!!! I Do NOT RECOMMEND front of house was rude and told me that my booking dis not exist!!! When i had a confirmation email . She was rude and said that i was abusing her and i just said i had a booking . This place has no customer service . The guy at the bar was lovely though. Who ever is the owner you really need to look at your staff and floor management. I was told no table Existed and i might not even been able to order a meal. I travelled 1 hour to see friends and i was so angry . I will not return and our friends will not return again Sorry for the bad review but your staff and head of house have NO customer service . And I run a customer service buisness. And i know training is number 1

Love going here for a seniors meal...quality food & great value for seniors. So much to choose from menu. The lamb shank & Mash is superb 👌

We have been several times before without issue, but today's service was very slow (for everyone, it seemed), the whiting , as it was advertised in the seniors' menu, was extremely tasteless flathead tails and we had to wait 20-25 minutes for a tiny portion of sticky date pudding (which, to be fair, was quite nice). We spoke to the service staff, but they seemed less than interested.

Good food, bit expensive, normally very popular. Personally, I enjoy it as it's very convenient but, in the middle of winter, I always seem to end up sitting in a draught 🤷‍♂️

The kids meals arrived quickly but it took over 30 minutes for 2 of our group to receive their lunch and almost an hour for the third adult. No apology, just food shoved on our table. The lemon pepper squid was very chewy but the chips weren't too bad. The salad is squeezed into a tiny bowl, so its more for show than actually eating. The person who waited nearly an hour had ordered a chicken parma - probably the most common dish in Melbourne, so you would think they could have got it right. It looked awful and she said it was overcooked and inedible. Luckily the kids meals were not bad. $140 for 3 adults and 2 kids plus drinks. The place was really busy, so I assume we may have just been unlucky, but with so many choices available in this area, we will not be going back.

Decent lamb shanks for lunch and having Carlton Draught tank beer was a plus. Bartender didn’t seem to be that interested in his customers. Would go again.

Great space throughout. Play area for the kids, gaming room, bar area, indoor and outdoor dining, small open function room at the entrance of venue. Plenty of off street parking, wheelchair access and restrooms. Pay as you go, no huge bill at the end.

Rissotto was probably the best I've ever eaten.

Large scale hotel with a massive menu. Something for everyone. Kids love the playground. Lots of gluten free options to choose from. Food was good value and tasted great.

The servers were friendly and attentive. The fish was very nice and the pumpkin soup with garlicbread too. The turkey and pork in the trio roast are dry. I wish they checked before serving.

Ordered 12.30pm. Food arrived at 1.15pm. Confusion on how many meals were ordered for 12 people. Not very good.
