About Us - Melbourne Museum

A visit to Melbourne Museum offers a rich and surprising insight into life in Victoria. We showcase Victoria’s intriguing permanent collections and bring you brilliant temporary exhibitions from near and far. Through different perspectives, you’ll explore our natural environment, cultures, and history.

In 1997, we moved from our old home in the State Library Building to a stunning new building located in the Carlton Gardens, designed by Denton Corker Marshall. The new Melbourne Museum reopened on 21 October 2000, and since then, it has become a hub of discovery and learning.

What You’ll Find Inside

  • The Forest Gallery: The living heart of the museum, home to tall trees and wondrous wildlife.
  • Science and Life Gallery: Located at the west end, featuring bugs, dinosaurs, fossils, animals, human biology, and more.
  • Melbourne Gallery: At the east end, this gallery tells the story of our beloved city and houses the famous racehorse Phar Lap.
  • Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre: A space imbued with the living traditions and knowledge of Koorie people and other cultures from around Australia.
  • Te Pasifika Gallery: A bright, soaring space filled with treasures from the Pacific Islands.
  • Children’s Gallery: Packed with interactive exhibits for little kids to explore and enjoy.
  • Touring Hall: Hosts major exhibitions from around the world.
  • IMAX Melbourne: Watch 3D documentaries and Hollywood blockbusters on the giant IMAX screen.
  • Café, Shop, and Theatre: Perfect for relaxing, shopping, and enjoying performances.

Wir toll für Kinder, die Dino Ausstellung auch klasse

Easy to find.

Great place for little ones to explore and play. Busy days may mean booking sessions so plan ahead… walk ins tricky if busy. Wish there were more baby (5-12 month) focused areas, but overall an amazing place to visit.

Good for kids spending time and learn there, great for photography.

A great place for kids to play and explore in Melbourne Museum.

perfec place to go for a full day with children, must watch a IMax film

The children’s gallery was perfect for my little one (1.5 year old) to run around and explore. Was very impressed with the space. The museum was also nice and quiet when we visited at 10am on a weekday.

Took my son who had a ball! Great area for toddlers!

It’s a great place to entertain little ones. Fun for all ages. The indoor playground is well thought out, safe, and lots of fun. We will definitely be back.

A must visit when travelling with toddlers to Melbourne. So easy and the kids had a ball! Right next to the dino display, another must see with the immersive display

Good fun for a rainy day, plenty of space in the place to have a wander

We came here in June 2024 but there haven’t been any updates to the gallery since we were there in 2022. It’s exactly the same as how we experienced it .. for the entry fee that we pay they could have updated the place better and added more sensory play for the babies and toddlers. Still a nice place for babies and toddlers if visiting for the first time.

適合五歲以下小朋友 人很多

This wasn’t what I expected at all. It was jam packed full of kids and carers, we couldn’t seem to find any dinosaur bones to dig up and the part about “young curators gaze at our specially selected museum objects” is odd as little kids don’t enjoy looking at museum objects anyway. My three year old hated it because it was too crowded and we left after five minutes.

The children gallery/play centre itself is quite good with an indoor and outdoor play area that children of all ages can enjoy however the staff were extremely rude on each occasion I have been. This ranging from front of house staff issuing tickets, staff in the children's gallery and staff at the Museum shop. The unwarranted rudeness from staff was completely off-putting and ruins the overall experience and image of the Museum.

Great environment but avoid weekends or public holidays

A wonderful space for little people to explore and learn through sensory play. Remember to check out the outdoor activities too. Highly recommend booking your spot early.

Very cool spot! Recommended

Not worth the price. Also just crowded.

A seriously cool experience for young kids. The climbing area is for 5 and under; so it’s perfect for the little ones to explore without pressure from older kids. So many awesome interactive pieces to explore!

It was really fun for our toddler- totally different experience for indoor play. Highly recommend.

Very good fun

It's located inside the Melbourne Museum. Great place to let the kids free range. If you're there, definitely check out the Titanic exhibition.

Great spot but a bit frustrating that you have to book in (on top of your membership and booking in on the day) plus there is a time limitation (1 hour).

Great place to bring your kids without worries of them getting bored. Safe place too !

Better than any other play centre

Attractive play features

Great sensory experience for my 14mo old but wouldn't exactly say it's worth the $15 entry fee. Not sure why you have to pay to get in to the museum.

I really wanted to enjoy this with my 1 year old, but it is certainly not appropriate for little babies and toddlers. Perhaps adjusting the age range from 2-5 would be more realistic. There were also plenty of older kids running around which made it very difficult for my little one to play safely. We ended up playing in the first little sensory area by the entrance, but this too was spoiled by an entitled mother collecting all of the play cushions for her two older (clearly over 5) children to build a fort with. I think the museum also lets too many people in per session, it was hectic!

Pretty sure my kids would live here if they could! Something for every little one to enjoy an ample space for nan to sit and watch the kids go wild. Wonderful space, we try to visit regularly with our membership.

Can be very crowded on weekends for toddler area Play areas are pretty good, but parent rooms outside of ticket area was quite limited so that was disaapointng considering its a childrens gallery area

Lovely place for kids but sessions need to be longer or don't have them at all

Amazing. Fun. Interactive. Clean and safe. Will be back

So full disclosure, we went on a rainy day in the school holidays. But this place so SO crowded. They need to limit spaces further. And so over-stimulating, not ideal at all for neuro-diverse. It seemed really dark in places that needed to be more lit in the section with the tigers face and animal display - obviously doesnt include owl section which is meant to be dark. There are lots of fun activities and because it was rainy we couldn’t explore the outside area. Only come if you’ve got your wits about you! Get ready to line up for everything and screaming kids.

Wow!! veey imressive. We loved it the kids have a blust. Hope some day will open a branch in Adeliae as well.

Good space for kids under 5. Toilet and food nearby. Clean and tidy, a big rope climbing structure and some other things. Nice bubble in water machine on the outside, with a sandpit and some other play stuff. Not utilised as much as the indoor stuff. As a parent I was able to relax for an hour (the time you're given) and the kids were kept busy.

This Children's Gallery has a lovely indoor interactive space, and an outdoor area with sand pits.

Really fun, but it's quite stuffy inside, needs cross ventilation and fresh air

Not too great to explore for kids

Very good for kids. I highly recommend this for your kids!

Our session was abit crowded but nice place for kids to play

A fantastic place for kids of all ages to play and explore. My 18mo loved this place!

Great indoor playground, great staff. But the most overpriced cookie and coffee I ever had in my life.

Perfect place for your child's entertainment and stimulation in learning and exploring

It's a good place for toddlers to get their energy out.

My grandbaby had a blast

Always a great place to visit.. We have taken our daughter regularly since born and she's now 3.

This is a wonderful place to bring young children. It's safe, vibrant, colourful, and stimulating. There are so many different and fun activities for the kids to explore. It's obvious that a lot of thought and research has gone into preparing this gallery. My grandchildren had a wonderful time there. Highly recommend it, and indeed, the whole museum. Thank you.

Little kids will love this area.. there is an outdoor area as well and places to sit and have a snack.

I came to visit Australia in 2011 and the first city that I was staying is Melbourne. However, this is my first time visiting the Melbourne Museum. I love the gallery and I could bring my kids to explore and even play at the Children's gallery. They always booked out, so it's better to buy the admission ticket as early as possible

Tolles Museum, besonders auch für Kinder. Childrens Gallery macht bereits eine Stunde früher zu...hatten diese zum Ende geplant, fing damit leider nach hinten los.

Great place, staff are very friendly and there i lots of novelty stuff to play with for the kids. My son loved the dinosaur fossil digging outside in particular.

This is a great experience for younger children. My son was so immersed and loved running around looking/playing with everything.

This place was absolutely amazing! We were visiting with our 3-year-old and this kept her busy all afternoon. There was absolutely so much detail and effort put into the museum we could really tell and genuinely enjoyed ourselves. Would strongly recommend

It is a great place to spend time with a child or children as a family. We loved the range of exhibitions and the way they are presented. It is very sensory and engaging. They also have a nice playground in the gallery. Parking fee is lil expensive ($20) but cannot complain about that considering its location. We would definitely want to visit this place again in the future!

My son loves going here!

Such a fun place, our 22 month old loved it!!

Very crowded despite it being ticketed. The main climbing structure is pointless unless you have older children. Lots or children in there over the age requirement.
